Everyone focuses on the welfare part of the song. They miss the lines just after. Young men putting themselves 6 feet in the ground and all this country does is keep kicking them down. Young men are committing suicide at an alarming rate, especially in Appalachia. Society dumps on young men and they are so full of despair

I reminded him that taking the emotion out of the song turns it from the soul of the world crying out in grief to a junkbox song with no meaning at all...

I will be 68 this year. My father's father was a share-cropper. My father walked behind a plow pulled by a mule throughout his childhood and until he graduated from high school...and then he worked construction for the entirety of his life...eking out a living and scraping by to make ends meet. My mother's father was a coal miner who died from black lung disease the year before I was born...She was able to finish 8th grade, however her education level then was comparable (if not better) than any present-day, high school graduates. Together, they lived this existence and we were amongst the 'working poor'. I joined the military as opposed to waiting for my notice to report for duty during the Vietnam War and remained until retiring from the service in 1988. I was the first in our family to attend college and get a degree...The end all be all...Right? I found unless you're part of the select few...the 'elite'/''chosen'...of Ivy league of upper echelon colleges, you don't count. It's not simply the 'Rich Men North of Richmond'...It's the system they've nurtured, created, and sheltered to keep all except the chosen few out...

I love all the reactions. You can draw a number of conclusions about the song however you like. It's all fun and games and laughter until the line about young men putting themselves 6ft under because we've been selling our souls and allowing the rich men north of rich men who want to control everything to grossly abuse their power and tax our nation's wealth into the ground. What a materpiece.

This is an awesome truth telling song and his voice is really powerful, but you might want to turn your volume up a bit. I've listened to it a number of times over the past few days. Millions of us, both men and women, relate to the truth in his words and frustration of feeling helpess to do anything about the decisions forced on us by the wealthy crooks in DC, the majority of whom care only about enriching and empowering themselves.

Over 40 million views on his youtube channel in 10 days, thousands of reviews...I saw one a tiny bit negative out of that. #1 on ITunes, #1 on 1oo Billboard.....now has 17 songs on ITunes. Please, God, support this young man.
I became disabled in 2005 had to get assistance, started gaining weight and blood sugars went up, SO I started ignoring the doctors and did my own research. The 'Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program' (food stamps) will not cover health foods, but will cover snack cakes, chips, sodas from the gas station, etc. All of the lower cost foods are loaded with sugar, even canned soup and vegetables, I even found that most frozen meats have added sugar. There are people that take advantage but the system itself is messed up, there should be education that comes with the food assistance program, even if it's just a 45min class teaching how to read ingredient and content labels.
And Oliver has no issue w people who legitimately need help. That's what it's for. He's only talking about those who could work but won't and sit around , eat junk food on the people's tax money. I will pray for your health. God bless you always.
