  • Anxiety and Stomach Problems: The Impact of Anxiety on Your Gut Health
Anxiety is the feeling of fear or apprehension about what's to come, and this is also the first natural response to stress or danger. While it is normal to experience a healthy amount of anxiety from time to time, it becomes a disorder when you cannot cope with your anxiety levels which can manifest both physically and mentally.
These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration depending on the individual and the underlying cause of the anxiety. You might know the psychological symptoms of anxiety such as excessive worry, irritability, racing thoughts, and so on. But did you pay attention to its physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, hyperventilation, muscle tension, sweating, trembling and shaking, fatigue, and gastrointestinal distress? These physical symptoms can affect your daily life and hinder normal function. So, in this video, we are focusing on one of the bothersome physical symptoms, namely gastrointestinal or simply stomach problems related to anxiety.
When a person experiences anxiety, whether it's a temporary bout of nervousness or a chronic anxiety disorder, it can trigger physiological responses throughout the body, including the gut. When the gut function is disturbed, you will experience many stomach issues. The root cause is the connection between anxiety and stomach which is well-documented and rooted in the intricate interplay between the brain and the gut, often referred to as the "gut-brain axis." This bi-directional communication pathway involves complex interactions between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system, which controls the gastrointestinal tract.
