This band had serious chops and was so under appreciated; in terms of their style and ability, they were true to themselves and made the music they wanted to make even if many people didn’t understand or appreciate it at the time.
Here was a band you couldn't put into a familiar category. They weren't Pop, they weren't certainly weren't Rock and Roll. They were supposed to be New Wave, but they weren't even that. They had their own distinct sound, both in songwriting and musicianship, and it was a great sound.
THIS BAND was criminally UNDERRATED . I can only imagine how much more refined they could've made what was already a very creative song writing collaboration ......
They got huge airplay time in the northeast back then and on MTV. I was a young adult in 1982 and I remember. They sold a serious amount of records 40 years ago.
I confess ... when I saw the title "Take the L", I thought the song would be about jumping on a subway train in Chicago! :) But it was another fine song by The Motels, regardless.
Martha was soooo brilliant. and her collection of songs were the most amazing. they complement and fit so well together and inhabit a unique realm all her own and so exhilarating for us. sad, happy tragic and cathartic all at once. like taking mda on the rainbow at the end of the humanverse.
Great thing is...you can see them in concert again!! in 2021 you can see and hear them in concert! I saw them in 2019 at LA Fairgrounds in Pomona and they were great!!
Such a simple, clever turn of phrase. Crazy it wasn't used before 1982! SUCH a great band! I was thrilled when they became such a big hit as I really loved the first two albums. I thought Marty Glascock was still on drums for this but it doesn't like like him back there..!🤔
In all Rock n Roll, there is absolutely nothing like a talented female vocalist out in front of an exceptional band singing an edgy song of lost love. (Yes, I realize that this is a lip synch performance.)
Think of the number of bands fronted by a female lead who played an instrument when Martha was rocking this song not many Quarterflash Heart Motels Stevie Nicks if you consider a tambourine an instrument lol
American Bandstand helped a lot of groups and solo's make it in the music world and appreciated it and still do. It's funny when you can see faked shows like this one, seeing that it is faked, watch the hand hitting the keyboard during the begining. You never hear a bad set of notes when he hits two keys badly at the same time
All of the microphones are turned off, and the song is being played on a record player over a loud speaker in the background. It is made to look just like a video clip.
who sounds like Martha Davis? b/4 or after..nobody. What an original...2 or 3 notes and u can tell its her. What every singer strives for....or...should that is.
Australia had Countdown, with its host and music guru Ian "Molly" Meldrum. The Motels made many appearances on that program. That probably had a lot to do with their popularity in Australia.
American band stand such a holes for making bands lip sink their songs . All Musicians should have Boycotted that show untill they do their songs live.
Other programs that also featured musicians performing their hit songs on them such as Top Pop, Solid Gold, and Countdown had the microphones turned off as well while the song was being played on a record player over a loud speaker in the background. It was all done that way to make it look just like a video clip.
Count how many times she says"take the L out of love and it's over". That's 80 percent of the lyrics. 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😯😯🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This band had serious chops and was so under appreciated; in terms of their style and ability, they were true to themselves and made the music they wanted to make even if many people didn’t understand or appreciate it at the time.
SO SO TRUE !
MS.DAVIS ROCKS
Mission of Mercy…. Nuff said
this band was off chops
This is without a doubt one of the top bands of the 80s...Martha put the class back into modern rock
Here was a band you couldn't put into a familiar category. They weren't Pop, they weren't certainly weren't Rock and Roll. They were supposed to be New Wave, but they weren't even that. They had their own distinct sound, both in songwriting and musicianship, and it was a great sound.
martha's voice is so sharp and clear and the band sounds so good
Lip Synch..
That's because they're pantomiming along to a studio recorded version of the song. This is not being performed live, it sounds too good for that.
How is it that people still get so easily fooled?
Great 80's gem. What a voice.
One of the greatest early 80s pop songs.Perfection.
THIS BAND was criminally UNDERRATED .
I can only imagine how much more refined they could've made what was already a very creative song writing collaboration ......
Damn you aint kidding. Just read your comment while song was climaxing they rule....
So true ......
How do you know they're underrated? They had 10,000 hits in the 70s and 80s.
They got huge airplay time in the northeast back then and on MTV. I was a young adult in 1982 and I remember. They sold a serious amount of records 40 years ago.
Martha's voice is mesmerizing and those guitar fills. unreal.
Guy's fills and leads were perfect for the motels songs ...
@@57highland yes, so melodic and tasteful. great guitarist.
Their best song, even better than only the lonely. Very clever lyrics
My all time favorite Motels song.
You almost never hear this one anymore either. She's hot and what a voice!
Totally The Same Here, Now You Don't Even Hear This Being Played. A Huge " Crime "!
this was the motels next hit song after only the lonely in 1982 I loved this band they had blues &rock swagger along with quarterflash the band!
Her eyes are magnetic. Hypnotic. That voice, too!
Those eyes...
Epic vocals from Martha on all fronts.. One of my all time favorite bands.
I confess ... when I saw the title "Take the L", I thought the song would be about jumping on a subway train in Chicago! :)
But it was another fine song by The Motels, regardless.
It was a triple play on words and meanings.
@@twikirobot6897 Triple?
2020 folks and it still rocks
Let me do the honors ... Marty Jourard on keyboards, Michael Goodroe on bass, Guy Perry on guitar, and Brian Glascock (an Englishman) on drums.
Ok, but, who's the Chickey-Babe singing? Don't know, do you...HA!
Brian has a what now? Jk. Juvenile I know!
And on vocals ... the majestic Martha Davis!
CLASSIC MOTELS, STILL SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!, the dj
Martha had that kinda nutty sexiness to her and that voice...incredible. The guitar is exceptional as well. love the fills and riffs, so tasty.
What a voice...
Martha was soooo brilliant. and her collection of songs were the most amazing. they complement and fit so well together and inhabit a unique realm all her own and so exhilarating for us. sad, happy tragic and cathartic all at once. like taking mda on the rainbow at the end of the humanverse.
God how I love this song, and most of their others, and Martha's voice is always so tragic in it's beauty.
This is their best song.
That whole LP, "All Four One", was brilliant.
I agree 100% on that one. This is a great song!
Total Control

Simply wow...love this music..so intense on melody and her Powerful darling voice ❤
Great thing is...you can see them in concert again!! in 2021 you can see and hear them in concert! I saw them in 2019 at LA Fairgrounds in Pomona and they were great!!

YES!
Such a simple, clever turn of phrase.
Crazy it wasn't used before 1982!
SUCH a great band! I was thrilled when they became such a big hit as I really loved the first two albums.

Like this a bit more than Only the Lonely.

For some reason Martha reminds me of a character out of a soap opera.
Martha in love You 💘🌹🎵🎶🎸

I swear The Motels ripped off my song, "Replace The L with an R and That's My Dog's Name." It was big in Japan.
That's a great lyric line: "Replace The L with an R and That's My Dog's Name."
Hey Kitty.
MTV when they played music.

Is this lip synced? sure sounds like the recorded version
all the acts on ABS lipsynced

The guitar players should be in Night Ranger.
They had more success in Australia where they were treat as Gods

Take the "lyrics" out of this song and its *"Only the Lonely".* 😁😁😁
Very good 🤣🤣
Lip sync performance. I did like this back in the 80's
American band stand such a holes for making bands lip sink their songs . All Musicians should have Boycotted that show untill they do their songs live.
The record companies wanted bands to sound like the studio version when they went on TV. Just the way it was then.
Other programs that also featured musicians performing their hit songs on them such as Top Pop, Solid Gold, and Countdown had the microphones turned off as well while the song was being played on a record player over a loud speaker in the background.
