When AB was on, every artist wanted to be on that show. And they all agreed to lip sync so they could promote the single. No big deal. Just enjoy the energy of the performers. That part is live.
I think it also helps them add more energy to their performance too since they didn't have to worry about missing notes which would help bring more attention to them

It's literally because it was mandatory on shows like "American Bandstand", for bands to sound exactly like the recorded studio version, mainly because of copyright infringement... If they played live and someone recorded it and sold it illegally , the record company wouldn't be able to sue quite as easily, for copyright infringement, but playing the original studio version, would allow them legally to persue a lawsuit, for copyright infringement, against whoever recorded and sold it, out there for a profit, on the black market, this version of the song, or sell it as a compilation of videos of the band or artists ... On the contrary artists, have to gain permission from the owner of song and the record company, in order to play a song in live concert, or record a cover version on an album...
