    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Cal (James Dean) tries to give Adam (Raymond Massey) his birthday present but he rejects the gift.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
This truncated screen version of John Steinbeck's best-seller was the first starring vehicle for explosive 1950s screen personality James Dean, who plays Cal Trask, the "bad" son of taciturn Salinas valley lettuce farmer Adam Trask (Raymond Massey). Although he means well, Cal can't stay out of trouble, nor is he able to match the esteem in which his father holds his "good" brother Aron (Richard Davalos). Only Aron's girlfriend Abra (Julie Harris) and kindly old sheriff Sam Burl Ives) can see the essential goodness in the troublesome Cal. When Adam invests in a chancy and wholly unsuccessful method of shipping his crops east, his wealth plummets. In an effort to save the business, Cal obtains money from his estranged mother (the proprietor of a whorehouse) and invests it in a risky new bean crop. The gamble pays off (thanks in no small part to the war), but Adam refuses to take the money from Cal, and the resultant quarrel causes Adam to have a stroke. Released the same year as Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden provided Dean with his first Oscar nomination, for Best Actor.

Cast: Richard Davalos, James Dean, Raymond Massey, Julie Harris

emma Woods it's basically a repeat of the beginning of the book. Cal is like a reincarnation of his brother Charles. It's basically the book repeating itself, that's the beauty of Steinbeck, he repeats the same thing without you knowing. Of course in the book Cal is more aggressive but I still LOOOOOOOOOOVE James as Cal

What makes this scene even more gripping is that this was real. James Dean was not acting. When he was hugging his father, in his mind, he was hugging his real father who in real life wanted nothing to do with him.

The improvised hug is magnificent. Here's a son who just wants to love his father and have his father love him. He tries to seek comfort in his father, yet is again rejected for the second time. Cal is too moody, too different, too "bad" and the hug is him reaching out, to be reassured that his father does love him. But all Adam does is stand there and yell his son's name like he were an insolent blubbering child. It gives me chills.

this touches on the saddest feeling I think exists - when someone tries their best to do something nice for someone they care about, just trying to connect, and that gesture is rejected. It's the first kind of sadness I ever remember feeling as a child, when I realized I hadn't been grateful for a present my mom gave me and I thought, she must be pretty sad thinking I didn't like the present, when I really did, I was just a toddler having a bad day. That thought still makes me deeply sad to this day even though I know she doesn't even remember it. Another time my dad, who my mom was soon to divorce, gave her a present which she told me in confidentiality that she didn't really like. It made me feel that deep sadness again, despite the triviality of the situation. I knew he just wanted to connect with her and that hope was in reality long gone. I can't really describe why this makes me so sad but it does. Jimmy really captured this feeling in this scene, we all felt the heartbreak like it was our own.

Me too. And in the improvised hug moment, watch his eyes--especially at 2:02--there's no artifice in this moment, the honesty of the pain, the desperation for love that is being withheld, it is almost unbearably real and he's able to convey all of that in his eyes.

Raymond Massey, who played his father, didn't like working with James Dean because Massey was used to actors reciting their lines as written, while Dean tried to improvise at times. When Massey rejected the $5000, Dean was supposed to turn away in sadness and walk (or run) out the door. Instead he went into his hugging/crying improvisation before leaving. Massey was surprised, uncomfortable, and mad about it. But Kazan liked the result and kept it in.

The one piece of advice I give to parents of young kids: You can never hug and kiss them enough, you can never tell them you love them enough. Distant, indifferent, undemonstrative, unloving parents leave walking wounded in their wake.

      Sean Pultz Jimmy improvised it.
The director Elia Kazan whispered in his ear “Okay during the moment of regret and rejection, just hug him, throw your arms around him, “Just love me Dad, love me!”
He improvised as secretly asked, but Raymond was furious and had no idea like “Elia, what was that all about, go tell James to not do that in the next take we do” and Elia replied “Okay...yeah...I’ll tell him”. He was just saying that to Raymond to make him comfortable, because instead of telling Jimmy not to do it, he went over to him and whispered “Do it again.”
What a great director, to get an antagonistic performance in the sneakiest way!

I’m not generally a fan of Dean’s style of acting; he usually chews the scenery too much for my taste. But this scene stuck with me long after I first saw it. Dean did a great job conveying his heartache and frustration at being rejected by the father who disliked him….
The story I heard was that Raymond Massey’s acting was augmented by Massey’s personal dislike of James Dean….

It is more heartbreaking to watch that this happened to him with his real father. Poor guy wanted a healthy son and father relationship and his dad pushes him off.

Some parents although not necessarily bad people are still not meant to have children as they are incapable of loving the child that need it, regardless of age. It's been said that Jimmy wasn't always acting in this film as he had much torment in his personal life & this helped release it. He was certainly right for the part of Cal Trask.

I cried watching this scene. I felt Cal's sadness. He's not evil. Even though I know Adam's life is more painful. 😢 But is it wrong to expect fair love from a father?

Where are the movies like this today ? All we seem to have are mindless, video type movies for a generation that knows NOTHING about talent or good scripts. It's all visual eye candy.

More than a contemporary story of Cain and Abel, it is a family story of choice, of the desire and sacrifice of choosing to be good or bad, despite DNA.

His father was such a sanctimonious old man. His own son goes into business by himself and offers his dad a cut of his profits and he refuses it. If I ever have children I’m not playing favorites because that’s bad parenting.

It was war profiteering that got him that money. Adam didn’t want that type of money, but Cal saw this as another emotional rejection.

Greatest. Actor. Ever. I have theories about his death, bc Turnupseed wont talk about it, did one little talk after the police let him go. Brando was so envious & had Mafia ties, I really think he had him murdered. Rolf was driving after the traffic stop, Dean had switched seats after getting the ticket. There are just so many questions. But James Dean is an Immortal. Thx for the upload.
