"Aron is everything that is good, mother" is said with so much irony. his voice is dripping with absolute hatred, and disdain-- but in such a passive way. i cant explain it; but this is by far my favorite scene.
Can you imagine if James Dean had lived to have a chance to play "Norman Bates" ...Perkins was good...Dean would taken that role to whole other level imo..he was born to go to play much edgier roles that would come along in the 60's and 70's
I would have loved to see what James Dean would have done with Norman Bates. I loved Anthony Perking performance, talk about iconic. I'm sure Jimmy would have added his own touches to the part, just like Anthony did.
American Film Institute left East of Eden off the list of the 100 best American films of all time. In regard only appear Giant and Rebel Without a Cause. His mother lived with the guilt of leaving her two boys so she could be free. You can see it on her face and you can see it on his...."you're not getting off the hook for $5K mom"
That's mostly true for the book. The movie adaptation took a whole lot of liberties with the book. I like both the book and the movie. Each one is great in its own way.
@@harmonicsrioter5385 hmm I just cant picture Cathy in a different way than in the book. The movie was good overall. But I think they ruined my favorite character in the movie. You know one girl who could nail Cathy with the right director? Cate Blanchett.
The movie is actually very good. It just covers the last part of the story, focusing on the sons Caleb and Aaron. There was a mini-series made in the early 1980s that covered the entire story. The book is very good though; I'm a big fan of Steinbeck's works.
Deangirl1995 : What do you talking about? James Dean is dead at 24 in 1955 Is it from a movie about James Dean what you're talking about? And why your nickname bro
While I appreciated some of it, for the most part, I didn’t care that much for this film...I was disappointed that it downplayed the character of Cathy.
Chainsaw Kitten I don’t agree, but I know what you mean. at the beginning of the book Cathy was this absolute soap opera psychopath and I loved every moment of it. In this she’s sort of a good guy!? Interesting take on it to say the least.
Can somebody help me find out which one is the younger brother between both cal and aron ? Tried to google it but there was no explaination. On the early scene, it was only said that their mother was dead when cal and aron was born, so were they supposed to be twin or somethin?
@Light in the PiazzaHe was upset because he thought his mother would be good like him. Except she was like Cal-not good. That's why he said Aron was everything that was good and why Aron was so upset. Cal shattered that image that Aron had built of their mother in his imagination.
Light in the Piazza their mother abandoned them after they were born. They grew up thinking that she was dead, but in reality, she was a prostitute, who worked her way up to owning her own brothel...actually, she got the brothel by killing its former madam. She was an evil, but fascinating woman, and her character was the most interesting in the entire novel in my opinion. In this movie, she is just a small side story, not very important other than Cal uses her to hurt his brother, who he was very jealous of.
Just finished Steinbeck's novel, a gruelling experience. I don't want to watch the movie after watching a few clips. It's so wrong.the boys are 17. The girl 16. Its set during the great war but we have 1950s hairstyles. All credit to Dean but Cal wasnt like this, and Aron was the blond good looking boy. Where is Lee, perhaps the main character in the novel or close to it. Im sad at seeing all this. If i hadnt just read the book maybe i could have been swept up by this new story. Shame on you Kazan
Aaron believed his mother to be dead and thought her to be pure and saintly, but Cal, in a pique of jealousy & revenge, revealed their mother to not only being alive but being the Madame of a brothel. (Cain slaying his brother, Abel)
The movie glossed over Kathy being a madame for a brothel. She was actually the big villain of the story but they really cut out her story entirely in the movie. It's understandable. Her character was very dark and would not have made it past censors in those days.

Aileen Bermingham he is bigger than brando
Maybe Brando is a little batter actor but james...

out of context this scene is hilarious this man really just assaulted two people
i’m saying i was like woah now😭
He wants aron to feel what he feels every time his dad hates on him because he reminds him of his mother..
And Aron ran away just like his mother did. As it turns out, Aron was actually like their mother while Cal was like Ada

Actually East of Eden was Dean's best film. It is one of the greatest movies ever made.
i wish he was around long enough to do a horror film

That would be awesome
Amazing composign! See how Dean lean on the door showing himself in a crooked way portraying a mad version of his perfect brother. 1:17
FcoGabler I think that’s so cool. It’s like an evil twin sort of thing.
This was an amazing movie so glad I bought it on DVD ..love James dean
Chilling , to think this is the last time Cal will ever see Aron ....
Wow. What a tense scene
So intense. Iconic Hollywood
What a great movie. So much emotions

Pure cold irony. Aaron seeing his mother for the first time must’ve been frightening.

@Kiss711 Wouldn't doubt it a bit.
Powerful
James dean had a macho voice for a 24 years old

To be fair, you can't really expect a movie to capture all the elements and backstory of a book. Have you seen/read "The Fountainhead"?
Books will always be better in most cases as a novel can cover more ground
interpretations of all actors are amazing!
In fact he borrowed the money from his mother to invest, he should have mentioned that to him arrogant father.
Did Clint Eastwood style his hair a bit like Dean ???
Ha! Now that you mention it.
