    Malta has been a yearly success for all the last 30 years. Have a good Maltese advisor and magic happens , nothing is a problem.

    Malta has so many of the advantages I am looking for - walkability, seaside, climate - but the car traffic is a deal-breaker.

      "the car traffic is a deal-breaker." Yes, that part is unfortunate.

      I reach all key points in 15 minutes .......is that bad ? Mellieha is in the extreme north of the island and only on Sunday there is traffic. The tax department are really cool people like normal locals who are helpful .

    The annual minimum tax for retiree expats is 7,500 euros plus 500 euros per dependent. I wouldn't call that low tax.

    Since joining the EU, Malta has gone to the dogs. This is not just my view, but also the view of many locals. Tourism has certainly boosted the economy, but it has been overly developed and over populated to the point of bursting at the seams. Malta has lost much of it's charm due to this development greed. Of course, those who disagree with my view, are those who are benefiting most from development, tourist rentals and any direct or indirect money making schemes.
    Foreigners with money, are buying property and the demand has raised the value so much, that young local couples, cannot afford to rent let alone buy. They postpone marriage because of this, and continue to live with parents. Much of the crime, is commited by foreingners from E U countries or Eastern European basket case countries.
    Yes indeed, Malta may have it's charm, great health care, lots of sunshine,
    and cheaper cost of living than much of Europe.......but it has most certainly gone to the dogs.

      Wow... that is a very interesting way to see it. I think tourist rentals should be controlled - they indeed displace locals.

      @the_expat I envy all those south east Asian countries that have become very popular with European and American foreigners, like Thailand, Vietnam, etc. They allow them to move and retire there, but they are not allowed to own land. This is done to protect the locals from foreign investors with money, who are always ready to pay a higher prices, and outbid the locals.

      Over tourism a problem all over unfortunately, even in places like Scotland. Suspect dirty money has made it worse in Malta.

    Malta's weather is far from ideal. It is way too hot for about 6 months of the year. Especially with climate change. That would be a major reason NOT to live in Malta.

    • @the_expat
      @the_expat  2 месяца назад

      While I do agree that in June, July, and August is a bit too hot sometimes, I would not say 6 months. September or May are quite pleasant already.
