  • So I went to MEPS yesterday and took the ASVAB. I did a lot better than I thought I would. I'm pretty sure I was the oldest dude there. Anyone else considering the military that's over 35? Instagram = erikminamihata
    Here's the book I used

      @erikminamihata  7 лет назад

      It's seems OK. The only reason why I didn't get that book was because it looked like there was too much information crammed onto each page haha. I have a small brain so I went with the book that was a little more simplified. But that's just me though...might be different for other people. Take a look at the pages at the library and see which one works best for you. Keep me updated!

    I'm 25, and I'm a junior college drop out... I had to leave school and start to work... Because bills..... I told my self "I don't want to be 40 years old and say what if I had joined the army", so I made the decision to join. I don't think i've ever been more excited/nervous! I took my ASVAB yesterday, and I scored a 92. I went with being a 74D (CBRN). I ship out in October.

      Erik thank for your replay , I took the ASVAB and did the meps for the Air force reserve back in 2014
      I was 33 yo at that time went to the assigned base every month and took a job and was ready to ship for basic training till I heard that they are about to raise the age for active duty so I resigned ( simply wrote a letter to my recruiter explaining why I should be dismissed) of
      Course he helped choose the words those don't hurt my credibility and I was out
      The hustle began when I had to contact an active duty recruiter it was very obvious to me that no one is willing to work with me since I have already taken the ASVAB and been to the MEPS or I could be wrong , anyway after a six month and this was in 2015 i found who is willing to work with me if I would retest because my job is not available for the moment was (diagnostic imaging) since I'm not a citizen my options were limited so we started talking about mechanics! Anyway he needed a dismissal letter from Westover MA ( my base ) to schedule me for the second time they said I must contact my recruiter he was retired so wrote him a letter asking him gratefully to help me he did and this took a while to get the letter at that time I was loosing my desire and things were getting twisted family and jobs etc so put the idea to rest and started driving trucks but every now and then I always think of my self as an Air force man so now I'm will to go back since it's more than two years I have to take ASVAB again and I'm scheduled for Late Jan 2018

    I took the ASVAB recently and scored a 95 AFQT. If you have some vague remembrance of high school math, freshen up on that (FOIL, fractions, arithmetic). Grammar is pretty set-explanatory, so is vocabulary. Science is basic, might have 1 or 2 questions that you guess on. Don’t stress the mechanics/electronics too much (but a basic understanding of switches or pullies helps too). Above all, DONT STRESS YOURSELF OUT

    Good Job man. I just saw your channel today. I’m 33 and it’s been more than 5 years since I actually took a test. I studied using the ASVAB Mastery Mobile app on the iPhone and that got me through, I guess with only 2 weeks of studying. I was pretty much studying in between breaks from work, on my commute to/from work and when I get home. I got a 74/99, it could have been better if given more time. With my score, I was able to qualify for all the jobs except for the 91S00 which require 88 Mechanical and 85 on Electrical. Anyway good luck on your journey.

    i'm operational air force but i joined when i was 33 had a birthday in BMT and now this Sunday i'll be 35. I'm also active duty. Being older in the air force has it's perks ESPECIALLY when you get to operational because a lot of the SNCOs and NCOs are around your age or slightly younger than you. They inherently give you more respect than the average 19 year old A1C. You'll notice general favoritism towards you as well and you'll have a lot more in common with your leadership. Also be prepared for A LOT of people calling you old timer, old man, grandpa. Take it as a compliment nobody bags on your age because they're trying to be mean people respect age. but it's always fun to bag on the old guy use it as motivation to be better than the younger enlisted especially at PT and just have fun with your experience.

      I'm a 3D1X3 which is Radio Frequency transmissions. essentially i'm a Cyber Support AFSC. you need a E70 to be considered for the duty. It's nice though we have missions all over the world, we also have a lot of cool "desk" jobs and we are not restricted to bases we can go to. We can operate at any base the air force uses or owns. and our TDYs we can travel the world doing what we do.

      Hey Erik - On those days you'll have an "off" day. You'll do details and such but will pretty much be in the dorm watching DVDs and you'll probably get an extra phone call too. For the rest of the time pretty much its just details, marching around to all of your appointments, drill and ceremony, and then PT in the evening followed by more drill and ceremony and details. You'll do awesome!

      @nnaqueeb 6 лет назад

      +Erik First, I want to thank you for what have you been doing with your channel. Greatly appreciate your time, effort and courage! Honestly, I don't think I fall under the usual demography of ASVAB candidates and since hasn't taken any conventional preparation won't be able to provide a realistic guideline like yours. Nonetheless...a) I bought a book (KAPLAN ASVAB), never read more than 10 pages back in summer, but without a doubt it is a great resource. I wasn't sure about receiving my citizenship before my 39th birthday, so at a point left the idea of pursuing military. b) Downloaded one app in December mid, which helped me tremendously about getting to familarize with the exam in general and basics of science, as I never studied science, let alone electronics in high school (International background). Didn't take any full length test before actual ASVAB, but I can imagine that can go a long way. The exam was around 2.25 hours for me followed by TAPAS (30 minutes). Two other candidates (must be high schoolers or younger) with me finished their tests way before I did.
      c) What I think , helped me was taking one question at a time and remained zoned out while tackling that question during the actual exam. Never thought about anything else besides doing mild stretching while on seated.
      I do have few questions for you and greatly appreciate if you can take time answering:
      a) I received BMT guide from my recruiter which states BMT PFT standards by age bracket. According to that, you and I fall under same age bracket and the 1.5 mile run time required to pass is 14:00 for our age group. Can you confirm that? I saw your video where you attempted 1.5 mile run under 12 minutes (do you know if active duty and reserve has slightly different criteria?) .
      2. I am a non-athletic guy with above average motivation to achieve BMT minimum graduation standard. Can you refer me to sources which can help me to gradually shred off 5 minutes from my 1.5 mile run time in 2 months? Greatly appreciate your any advice, suggestions or direction. Keep up with your great work! BTW how is your AFOQT prep going?

    I'm 38. Took the ASVAB yesterday and got a 36 but my line score wasn't that great. My recruiter said that there were no jobs for me base on my line score. Very DISAPPOINTED when he said that. I'm gonna try again w/In 30 days but I really need help with everything. Math was my strongest while testing.

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  6 лет назад

      That's actually not bad for taking it after being out of school for so long. Sounds like if you just focus on the math most of the time you'll be good to go. Have you picked up an asvab book yet? They're all similar to whats on the test. Library has a lot of them. I basically studied with a book and used asvabpracticetestonline.com/ over and over again until the problems started sticking. When you do your studying try not to overload yourself with too many different types of math problems at one time. Focus on really understanding a few at a time. Sorry for the rant. Hope this helps. Hit me up anytime with any questions. Keep me updated!

      Erik he gave me some websites to study from. An admin job would be great but then what r the chances of me getting one if they don't come around that often? I will stop by the library to check out some asvab books to help me out as well.

      AFQT 61 I honestly have no clue how the calculate a 61 based on my standard scores. I also don't know how to calculate my asvab score.
      Standard scores: GS 50, AR 54, WK 54, PC 54, MK 50, EL 55, AS 63, MC 49, AO 51, VE 54.
      Line scores for the ARMY (each branch has a different scoring model) GT 109, CL 107, CO 108, EL 110, FA 108, GM 111, MM 115, OF 111, SC 108, ST 108.
      I qualify for most any combat position including ranger and Airborne school. There are also a number of intelligence positions I qualify for which is surprising since I feel my standard scores are pretty low. My GT line score is 1 point off from qualifying for special forces!!

    • @ohtwo23
      @ohtwo23 7 лет назад +1

      As for the test I feel it was more difficult than the practice version when the recruiter assured me that it was easier. Study folks. That's all I can say. If you're right out of high school you shouldn't have a problem. I'm 26 and haven't touched a book in nearly 10 years. As for word knowledge you're just gonna get screwed big time. They ask for similar words of words you can hardly pronounce and all 4 answers are words you've never heard of either haha.

    Hi! So I have the same exact book and I just wanted to get a gist of your study plan...like how long did you study each day and how long did it take you to study practically the book before you were ready to take the actual ASVAB?
    I tend to have test anxiety and I honestly just want to make sure I get a 60+ on the ASVAB because the rate (job) I want is a Corpsman for the Navy.
    Thank you for the informative video, btw :)

      Hi Ma! So basically I just studied around an hour~ two hours a day trying to not focus on too much at a time. Maybe like 3 pages at a time tops. I would also take the practice test for the sections I studied everyday. It didn't matter if I got something wrong because if I did I'd go back and try to figure out what I messed up and study from there. So pretty much I was reviewing the stuff I knew and studying the crap out of the stuff I didn't. Best of luck!!! Let me know how it goes! When do you take the test?

    • @majoves293
      @majoves293 6 лет назад +1

      Erik, thank you s’much for replying!
      I’m planning to take it towards the end of May. I’m going to start studying tomorrow, just as you suggested with at least 1-2 hrs/day. Do you think it’d be enough time?
      My goal is to get a qualifying score for Corpsman in the Navy. (I pretty much don’t want any other job than that lol.) I would want to work towards scoring a 70 :)
      Is there any other studying tips that you could share in regards of the arithmetic/math knowledge portion? That’s pretty much the one I kind of struggle with because my stronger point is English

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  6 лет назад

      Hey Ma - take the practice test here asvabpracticetestonline.com/ and see how you do. That should give you a good idea on where you're at with the test. I'd start with the math knowledge and arithmetic first. Spend from now all the way up until you take the test working on those problems. Work on the ones you're having the hardest time with the most. When you take the practice tests at the end of it it'll show you what you got wrong and what the right answer is and then go back and do it again. Also, I watched youtube tutorial vids on the math problems that I was having a hard time understanding. That helped a lot! As you start getting more comfortable start throwing in the rest of the stuff. Let me know how it goes!

    Wassup Erik, I'm thinking about joining the Navy I scored a 39 on the practice test, which is pretty bad. While taking the test I ignored the EL, AS, MC, and AO parts of the test. Now I'm wondering if ignoring the sections caused me to get an awful score.

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  7 лет назад

      What's up Alucard! Yeah, most likely...but hey, it was just a practice test. Don't sweat it. Just start prepping and take it again. I started at a 36 haha. But yeah, just start preparing and that score will jump up no problem. When do you plan on taking it again? I have a bunch of friends in the Navy...they loved life at sea! Keep me updated!

    My best friend is a literal genius. He made a 92 and didn't even study. I'm guessing he's just naturally gifted. I made a freaking 38. That's about as good as a monkey could score.

    Sadly I need to wait 2 or less months to retake my ASVAB.
    However I got a question, last time I took my ASVAB I did horrible. Before that I got a 46, just needed to study more and I did study more but when I took the ASVAB I got a score of 23. I'm trying to find just what I can do to get my score higher but I seem to get anxiety almost when it comes to taking the test and with certain math problems. Do you know how exactly I could get over these or how maybe I should study??
    ((Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Tried to word it the best I could!!))

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  7 лет назад

      Hey DeathlyWish - Well first off it's cool that you have to wait 2 months to take the test. Now you'll have extra time to study. I have the same problem as you. But what really helps is just doing the practice tests over and over again. You'll do it so many times that even if you're nervous you'll automatically know what to do.
      Same thing when I would learn songs that I'd have to perform. Even though I'd get extremely nervous before a show I knew that no matter what, I've practiced enough to know that I'll play the songs. Repetition will get you through it.
      I also used flash cards to help me memorize the formulas, but I made sure not to look at more than like 5 or 6 cards at a time. I'll try to make a video on some study and test taking techniques I used. Would that help? Let me know!

    • @Grimfated
      @Grimfated 7 лет назад

      Well in my case it was a petty misdemeanor trespassing charge and a disorderly conduct charge, but only because the Navy considered it a domestic violence case. I had to get those expunged to join. Typically as long as it isn't a serious crime on your record or a DV issue you'd probably be ok.

He told me I'll score 5-10 pts higher. I'm joining the AF as well. I'm really hoping to get into hvac or electrical systems (basically an electrician) so I have something transferable when i get out. What are some ways to calm myself down before the test,? thanks man

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  7 лет назад

      Right on Ben! So best advice I can give you on that is try make sure to read the problems carefully. They'll be ones in there were say the first part of the questions starts off in inches and the second part of the question will be in feet. Just try to look out for small details like that.
      Also, sounds lame but one of the best things to do when you need to relax during the test is to check your breathing. For real, if you start panicking most likely you're also holding your breath. This really does work for me. Oh yeah, and know that if you don't score as high as you would have liked on the test retake it! Don't settle. Aim for those scores you need to get those jobs you want! Those are awesome jobs! I walked in knowing that if I didn't score well it wasn't going to be that bad because I'd retake it. That really relaxed me. Hope this helps! Keep me updated!!

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  5 лет назад

      Hey Andres, yeah I get nervous too when taking tests. The good thing is though now you know what you need to study. Give yourself a couple months before you take it again. That way you don't have to cram. Try to just learn a page or two out of your book a day. On the weight thing, try not eating until 11am and stop eating at 6pm. That should help out with that. But yeah, you still have a few chances left to take the test again so see if you can go to the library and pick up some study material.

      Cole, that's awesome! I used this book amzn.to/2qLcY6i , the CD it came with (all practice tests on it) and I went to www.asvabpracticetests.com/ and did the practice tests on there. Basically, i took all the practice tests over and over. You can probably find the book at the library though, so you don't have to buy it.
      The best part about taking the practice tests is that when you get the wrong answers the test will show you how to get the right answer....don't worry about not knowing certain things in the beginning, all that will come in time from repetition. Best of luck! Let me know if you need any further details!

    I took a practice ASVAB in the recruiters office and got a 29 :( I'm going for Airforce because of my age... I'm 35.
    I take the real ASVB on December 21st... I'm EXTREMELY weak in math. I can do the VERY basics lol. I can add, subtract, multiply and divide.. but I have a REALLY hard time with fractions, decimlas, equations. I never had this type of math before. IF I did I don't remember lol. I've been out of HS for 17 years ! I've lost 115 lbs so I can join the military that was a piece of cake in dropping the weight... studying for the ASVAB has been the most difficult part. ANY advice would be great !! what do you think can help me on the math ?? Should I only focus on the word knowledge, paragraph competition, math reasoning, and math knowledge ?? those 4 subjects are what gives you your AFQT score ?? please help ! :)

      @erikminamihata  6 лет назад +6

      Hey Michelle. Yeah, I'm on the same boat as you. The math was jacked up for me. The best advice I can give you on that is to watch videos of people solving similar problems while doing the free online practice tests. When you're studying don't do too many different types of problems at once. Just practice a page a day out of your book doing the same problem over and over till you get it right. I'll post a video with some tips on fractions, decimals, and equations. When are you taking the exam again?

    • @michelles7531
      @michelles7531 6 лет назад

      Erik Thank you. I think that will definitely help in not trying to learn to many different math problems at once... the word problems is pretty tough also. I take my test on the 20th or 21st. utube has helped a bit also in watching how certain math is done. I also heard to learn the FOIL method and the reverse FOIL method... do you remember a lot of the word knowledge problems ? was there a lot of fouls and equations to remember ?? I've lost 118 lbs and this is SO much harder... I feel like I'm over my head with the ASVAB :(

      Hey Jerald - I made a video about that section here:

      To be honest that section is very hard to study for. I'd say use the pointers in the video above and also to make sure to study really hard on the math, science, mechanical, electronics, auto & shop, & assembling objects sections. Which MOS and branch are you going for? What kind of score are you looking to get? Perhaps a good strategy would be to focus on the areas directly related to your end goal. Hey Richie - Best advice I can give you aside from studying is to take the practice tests over and over. That way when you get to the exam you will at least have an understanding of what you're going to see. I actually watch a bunch of videos on how to solve math equations that were on those tests. I'll put up a video soon breaking down how I studied and went about it.
      But yeah, I'm not like a person who did awesome in school so it should help. When do you plan on taking it? I'll try to put something up by Friday

      arizona tea hey bro! Yea I heard marines are strict! Even when I was in Navy JROTC the Marine in charge of us would tell us not to get tattoos haha! Are you going for a different branch?

      Erik - my tattoo goes past my elbow so probably not. They should let u serve your country no matter if u have tattoo. Just as long their not offensive, racist, etc

      Hey same here! For real, math has always been my worst subject. The online practice tests help a lot. I'm putting a video op this week on doing the math sections. Hope they help! When do you plan on going back?

    What kind of math did you see on the test

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  6 лет назад +3

      Addition, subtraction, division, proportions, conversions, averages, solving for x, distance = rate*time, area of square, triangle, perimeter, math of money...sounds like a lot but not too bad

    i have the ASVAB for Dummies book, and a website asvaber.com (Allows you to take practice tests online with a countdown) and the ASVAB freaks me out. The ASVAB test you took at home, was it the PICAT? I'm looking into the Air Force, semi interested in the Marines but mostly Air force

    • @erikminamihata
      @erikminamihata  7 лет назад

      Yup! PICAT at home. Don't freak out haha, just prepare with the timer and you'll be good! Which types of jobs interest you more?

      Well, on the Air Force side I'm more interested in mechanical type jobs or structural. Plus I'm interested in their educational mindset . I made a list but its not in front of me right now.
      I like the marines because of their physical nature, something I use to be a while back ha.

      Nice Bro. Both are going to be legit choices. I'm all about the Air Force. When I go operational my wife and I are both going to work on getting Master's Degrees. But yeah. Go Air Force!! HAHA, you'll work on some sick air frames!
