After a brief stop in Port Clinton PA, engineer Shane Frederickson takes the throttle to the roof and accelerates Reading & Northern 4-8-4 #2102 back to track speed.
This was filmed on September 3rd during fourth and final Iron Horse Ramble of 2022. Special thanks to Brady Sanker for providing the trackside footage in Port Clinton.

Holy crap, they are beating the piss outta that thing. You love to see it. They rebuilt it, and they want to run it like they did... Need to get out there sooner or later. :D
Imagine Reading had 30 of them at one time. Or was it 35?
I'm not an expert on these things but it looked as if he pulled the throttle out too far a bit too soon a couple of times, but maybe you never know when onn of these locomotives is going to slip.
@@1940limited it's very much a feel thing, and can be tough to know if you can grab more.
You really have too. I was out there twice this year and going back one more time. I was right by the tracks in august for the doubleheader when they came charging out of port Clinton. This was my first time actually chasing a excursion and it was a absolute blast.
So THIS is the one you were talking about! I had seen one of it leaving out double header with 425 and you could see the valve gear set basically in corner, and thought that's the one you meant.
You know the engineer is giving that thing power the correct way when the reading 6 chime isn't loud enough to get past the stack talk 💀
its so loud😂😂its so crazy to me

It's so loud that you can't even hear the whistle
Beautiful footage. 2102 just might be one of the most impressive steam locomotives now operating in the United States. Kudos to the R&N for bringing her back!
Indeed, especially with how she been handling revenue freights.
I think it is one of the most impressive. It's all I need in a locomotive.'m happy to live petty close by so I can see it frequently. I rode behind it several times in the 1980s including a trip to Harrisburg. I'm glad it's been brought back after 31 years.

I love this video, Hogger really gets after that throttle and works his engine.
Large consist makes for excellent stack talk!!!
Just awesome!!!
those engines are the greatest machines ever build by mankind
Especially when computers weren't around in those days in the machine shops giving guidance to shop technicians. Yet everything worked perfectly well because these locomotives were the pride of America. For a long time these steam engine trains kept this nation going.

The R&N paid for the whole Johnson bar, and they are gonna use the whole Johnson bar!
Best comment.

The 2102 is near and dear to my heart not only as a steam fan, a rail fan, my great grandfather was once at the helm of this beauty before I was born, it’s amazing to see the iron horse shine brighter than before, I’m glad she still lives on god bless the 2102 and god bless America
Amen!
It is great to see a Reading T1 class locomotive back in operation after decades of being inactive, the Iron Horse Rambles have been reborn into a new era & engine 2102 is delivering an impressive performance hauling the excursion trains.
I wish that RDG #2101 would get rebuilt after being a Chessie System steamer in 1977 and 78.
random person: trains cant do burnouts.
2102 operator: hold my beer
/s
That thing has so much power it’s rocking back and forth when it first starts accelerating😳
2102 definitely had something to say about 1522's loudest engine title
Not even close.
Very beautiful scenery where this train passed through. It's fantastic that some people are trying to keep these vintage trains going. Especially when they're a sight to behold because they're part of our railroad history.
wish they werent history, to crew one of these would be an amazing workday
@@BeefSupreme115 I certainly sympathize with you if America went back to using the steam engine trains. That certainly wouldn't be a problem because America is rich in coal. I don't know if it would sit well with environmentalists because black smoke would be coming out of the trains smokestacks. It seems that these trains are still useful in some way. If you ever seen one they're a sight to behold because I saw one pass through my hometown back in 2010. A steam engine left San Antonio, Texas and passed through my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas enroute to Kingsville,Texas for some celebration regarding the Good Old Days. When the celebration was over it passed through my hometown enroute back to San Antonio, Texas. It was blowing it's mournful whistle making its presence known on the rails of Corpus Christi, Texas. It be great if they weren't part of history still being used. But, it's what it is.
This is a 100% perfect example of American Steam, very loud, very strong, and very beautiful. The R&N did a phenomenal job restoring her!!!!!
Geez I knew 2102 is loud but when you have POV in the cab and right side of the drivers you can really hear how loud she is
They're driving it as it supposed to be driven: FULL STEAM AHEAD!
Jeez it gives me goosebumps!
0:18 you can tell the engineer is just like "I don't wanna slip out but I also wanna go somewhere goddammit!"
One of the best displays of big steam power and stack talk. Excellent video!
One of the best railroad oriented films ever! Epic shots and sound quality! Thanks!
I can’t tell you how big 1:54 made me grin like a child. Something about the building tempo in the rhythm of the huffs from the train being capped perfectly by that classic steam whistle just made me so happy for no reason
1:58 wow! I still can’t believe the whistle got drowned out by the stack talk
Insane right?

Leaving on sand and hauling the mail! To see this in the 21st century is a real treat.
What they were hauling was another word for "donkey"!
Great video. Loved the cab shots. Good job trying to capture the impressive sound these T-1's make.
I love how you can see the two whistle cords in the cab. One for passenger trains and the other for freight trains
Does she have two whistles, then?
@@sambrown6426 yes, she's also got a reading hooter whistle they use from time to time
@@Heat0ne Question is, which one's for freight, and which one's for passenger?
@@Heat0ne Also, I once drove a 40-horsepower Case steam tractor with 3 whistles on it, ranging from a little single-chime, to a B&O 6-chime.
@@sambrown6426 honestly not sure if they're being that official. Nearly every time I see her run they end up using both through the day. Although the owner Andy Mueller seems to like using the hooter when he's at the throttle. The Frederick's seem to like using the 6 chime when they're running.
Beautiful video of an amazing engine! Beautiful scenery! Love the camera work! Well done Jamie! 🌻🌻🌻
This is an excellent video! That thing is beautiful. It's hard to believe it started as a 2-8-0. A triumph of the Reading shops.
It still amazes me that the Steam Locomotive was made on a sheet of paper, a pencil, a ruler and a man with a dream. What an outstanding peace of engineering
0:10 that train whistle is Awesome
Yeah Reading 6 Chimes are great!
The might of a Reading 6 Chime
And it's running all by itself amazing
The cab rocking back in forth in the beginning like it is a small steam loco😂
What a fabulous video! I've never seen any cab shots of 2102. I don't know how you did this, but great job! Thanks for sharing.
Imagine what it could be like if 2100 reunites with 2102, perhaps a Reading T1 Doubleheader reunion is possible.

I never noticed the 'Boxpok by Baldwin' on the drivers before!
What does that mean? I know Baldwin were trainmakers back in the day but thats about it.
@@nielsleenknegt5839 "Boxpok" is the name of the wheel design, so called because each wheel spoke is hollow with a square cross section. These particular Boxpok wheels were, of course, made by Baldwin.
Who needs a whistle when you can hear the chugs from miles away? Hah hah hah hah!
that first grade crossing might as well have not even been blown with the chuff bark being there.
yt: how many times have you watched this?
me: *chuff chuff*
Love this. So nice to be able to hold a train in my lap as I watch on my tablet. I love trains.
I love the cab view. Wish there was more vids like this one tbh.
I have quite a few more on my channel featuring 4-6-2 425. And DVD/Blu-ray/Streaming with 2102.
I absolutely love this!! Beautiful footage!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
now thats what you call a train sounds perfect
Great video work - Thanks, Norm
The engineer did a outstanding job. Lets not forget the fireman that had to keep up awesome performance on both
The fact that the sound of the engine accelerating drowns out the whistle speaks volumes
this is the only cab video ive seen of 2102 in motion thus far.
Me too.
I will forever enjoy that the engineer just decides "okay, we're out of the corner by a millimeter...time to put the throttle on the roof!"
Excellently filmed, very nice photo positions 👍👍👍👍
Beautiful machine!
wow, what a beauty this Reading and northern is! absolutely such an amazing locomotive. What a great video. 👍😀
This is how I like it! No helper diesels, just 2102 doing all the work without any struggle!
I love steam engines but there's something totally awesome about the Reading T-1s.
Absolutely breathtaking video! 👏
In my opinion of Reading T1 locomotive 2102 is one of the loudest operating 4-8-4 in excursion service. The shotgun exhaust is so loud it almost drowns out the sound of her Reading 6 chime whistle. It won’t be long until her sister 2100 will be operating as well once the restoration is completed by the American Steam Preservation Society. Once both T1 northerns are operating, They will together be the loudest operating 4-8-4s in excursions service being the loudest can match the late Frisco 4-8-2 mountain type number 1522 the soon to be restored Western Maryland consolidation Mountain Thunder number 734 and still currently operating Reading and Northern 4-6-2 Pacific number 425 all hold the distinction of being the loudest steam engines in excursion service.
Don't forget the SP&S 700 and the SP 4449, two of the loudest locomotives I've ridden behind many times!
I've been around 611 when it thundered out of a couple VA towns in 2015, and I thought it was pretty deafening at the time. Just by listening to these videos, 2102 sounds 3x louder than her. You can tell the crews are still learning how best to throttle the incredible power of that thing! Pennsylvanians should be proud to call that magnificent engine one of their own.
Above all else though, Frisco 1522 is still The Loudest Steam Locomotive in the World even when in her 2nd retirement.
You just can't beat that.
Yes, I almost forgot about those 2 engines I didn’t know that 4449 and 700 had loud exhaust if anyone has a video I’d like to see it then I will correctly say that the Reading T1 northerns or one of the loudest northerns in operation
844 is extremely loud when you push 'er. ruclips.net/video/O8BXipiLfwA/видео.html
Beautiful footage!
What amazing machine this is better than a iPhone for real ❤️🔥❤️🔥🚂
Love the cab footage! Also like the conversion to 26L air brakes.
1:17 , see the fire box inhaling with each puff .
That is something I did not notice, great detail gone noticed!
@ ya, I tend to miss the more obvious. 🤫🤭
Great footage of the wheels in action! It's reminiscent of watching the the Mark 1 videos with footage from thier "chooch" cams.
Awesome to see this beautiful machine working
Oh my goodness. That was amazing. Good job on the close-up. This video is cool.
Now these boys know how to run a steam locomotive.
When I was a kid the engineer was Charlie Kachel.
I have an old LP record of sound effects from the Iron Horse Rambles in 60 and 61along with the car# an Polaroid pix. I also have 2 letters from the Reading, inviting me to a tour of the roundhouse where the engines were stored after the Rambles were over
Beautiful locomotive! Super shots!
18 different cars of multiple makes and models. No wonder the throttle was wide open, not even modern diesels would be able to pull that much weight easily
Diesels can pull twice the amount of weight that steamers can handle, Diesels are very storng.
They can also runaway if conditions are right
In the UK you could never even dream of that sort of size and power especially at that speed on a single track the closest we have are the Riddles 9Fs that are only allowed to go over 25 on special occasions at the Grea Central Railway
you can even watch as the fire starts to glow more and more in the firebox through the holes in the firebox door.
Edit: that some crazy stuff. always loved steam engines.
To hear 611 like this...... Actually working, at speed. Would be a absolute dream.
611 has been worked like this a few times
@@SuperAWaC but not for long periods. Just to get up a hill or something. This is constant. Like it should be. No help from anything else. Just pure work.
That ladies and gentlemen is how you keep a passenger train on time. That and a shit load of horsepower.
Beautiful!!!
Beautiful sound!
Damn you can even see in the firebox, the chuffs just making the coal burn hotter and hotter thats so so cool!!
These are what steam trains can do
Now that's was I call hauling ass!
She took no time getting up to speed! That’s one hell of a machine!
Usually you see these titles like "train blasts out of such-and-such" and it's some mambi-pambi Sunday stroll down through the yard, easing onto the mainline, maybe hitting 25 after a few miles. Not these guys. They pull it back on the pin and just leave it there. 425 was always loud, too.
It's amazing how that weight stays on those skinny little rails..
Anyone sitting in a car who DOESN'T hear that coming has their radio set too loud.
Qué hermoso, muchas gracias por llevarme a mi niñez!
Crazy just busting the wheels loose like that. Awesome.
Very nice find!🤝🤝🤝🤝
Only other engine I know that gets worked that hard is the J&L 58 on the J&L narrow gauge in Youngstown, OH
Now that they corrected the off beat exhaust they it will sound even better.
I enjoyed watching this great video 👍
she is ALIVE
You know your working it hard when it’s stack talk is DROWNING THE READING 6 CHIME OUT
Edit: thanks for the like.
I could just watch the cab footage from Rdg to JT and be happy. Thats the best part for me! Or the rods and wheels with the cab footage on a split screen🤣😊😊😊
Wonderful engineer and engine
2.5 rotations out of the drivers before he said "alright we got places to be"-'yoink'
Good morning ,👍Nice Fantastic 🚂👌
I wish you good health and a nice day 🌞☕
Greetings Janusz from Warsaw, 🇵🇱 🖐️Poland ✌️
It’s like poetry.
Long ago there used to be dragons. Drinking ponds and lakes worth of water, eating coal, spitting fire smoke and steam. Big enough a village worth of people used to be able to ride one, fast and strong enough to haul whatever we threw at them. Hundreds of thousands dotting all over the world. And then they disappeared. And only a few remain.
Support the acquisition of the Shamokin Valley RR by the Reading and Northern.
They are RUNNING HER LIKE THEY STOLE HER LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
When will the DVD about 2102 be out?
As of now there will be 2 DVDs. The first covers the 50-car coal train, 100-car coal train, and the first 2 Iron Horse Rambles. The second will cover the August doubleheader with 425, the last Iron Horse Ramble on Sept. 3rd, and some of the fall foliage trips. I hope to have them both done late November or early December.
James. How more cab you think you may offer off this trip..besides the trackside?
@@davidtrexler7928 Not sure, but there will certainly be more.
Great footage inside the cab. The sound is excellent in this video also.
Is that a Wootten firebox on that locomotive?
Yes that is. All of the original Reading’s steamers had this specific firebox design.
@@northpennvalleysteamrailroad thanks for that, it’s such a unique and interesting piece of cost effective engineering
I wonder what 425 and 2102 where talking about in the shed
That's awesome stuff. Did I see a wheel slip or two on the star though?
The engineers don't wave from the trains anymore, not like they did back in 1954
Amazing 👏
Good video, like😃!
Will you do a DVD on 1309 in the near future?
Right now I'm working on 3 different 2102 DVDs. 1309 will probably be sometime next year.
