The first WWE Elimination Chamber match took place on November 17, 2002 at the Survivor Series 2002 event in New York City. Inside the first Chamber match was Rob Van Dam, Chris Jericho, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Kane and Booker T, and the tone of future Elimination Chamber was set when the main event of Survivor Series 2002 turned out to be an extremely physical encounter.
In storyline, Eric Bischoff came up with the Elimination Chamber as a way to compete with Smackdown's Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker Hell in a Cell match at No Mercy 2002. With the Ruthless Aggression era featuring competition between Raw and Smackdown, the Elimination Chamber's creation was exclusive to the Raw brand and only Raw superstars could compete inside the structure. In reality, Triple H came up with the Elimination Chamber concept when he reportedly wanted to do a War Games match in the WWE. Vince McMahon didn't want to hold a War Games contest, but he was open to the idea of this new Elimination Chamber idea. In the end, Shawn Michaels won the match and he became the world heavyweight champion for the very first time in his career.
This video looks at the creation of the Elimination Chamber, the difficulties the superstars had dealing with this new match type, and we also take a close look at the inaugural match.
