- A gut-wrenching, startling historical thriller about communist Romania and the citizen spy network that devastated a nation, from the #1 New York Times bestselling, award-winning author of Salt to the Sea and Between Shades of Gray.
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force.
Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves-or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.
Cristian risks everything to unmask the truth behind the regime, give voice to fellow Romanians, and expose to the world what is happening in his country. He eagerly joins the revolution to fight for change when the time arrives. But what is the cost of freedom?
Master storyteller Ruta Sepetys is back with a historical thriller that examines the little-known history of a nation defined by silence, pain, and the unwavering conviction of the human spirit. - Развлечения
The entire book was amazing but the latter part, the revolution, was simply amazingly written.
I just finished reading this last night. It's easily going to be a favorite of mine for 2022. I can't stop thinking about it. Highly recommended!
as a romanian, i can confirm that all the facts in the book are facts. This was the sad reality that my parrents and grand parrents told to me too.
one of the toughest communist system
@@adrian1622 Were you born in the West?
@@adrian1622 Caucescu regime was a very similar to Putin regime and this book is warning to Europe because in Europe are dictators still.
Such a great book!
This would be an amazing movie
I read this. Have for many years been interested in Romania and even got to take a trip there in 1993. Amazing country. It had to be so hard to live under such a controlling dictator. The part about the family whispering in their own house so they wouldn't be overheard by any recording device was hard to imagine.
Just finished it. One of the best👏
To me it’s funny that an American yes of Lithuanian descent is writing a book about Romanian life during communist times, the times I was born in and some I lived through. I know people personally who suffered at the hands of the communists in my country. I know a lady who lost her sibling during the Romanian revolution.
I read this while on my flight to Bucharest. It was incredible to be able to see all of the places where the revolution took place (already on my itinerary) after having read about it in the novel. It brought more meaning to it all. The book inspired me as well to go to Sălăjan to see Cristian's neighborhood and just wander. Not much there besides the apartment blocks the characters live in, but then again, if you read the book, it helps you to take it all in. Additionally, the locals running the restaurants in the neighborhood were very excited to have a foreign tourist visiting and dining there (so support the businesses in Cristi's neighborhood!).
I would have loved this book anyways as a good read, but I think it is an essential one if you are going to visit Bucharest.
Im reading the book, its AMAZING and it would be soooo goood if theres A MOVIE FOR THIS BOOK!!
The end is so tragic
Anything she writes in reading 😮 so excited!
Just finished this book and it is in my top 3 books of all time
