Fagen doesn't get enough credit as a great singer, I really couldn't think of any other vocalist that could fit this music. So cool & different is his style.
his voice is as in the pocket as all of their instrumentals. which feels weird to say, calling a lead rock vocalist "in the pocket". but it's true, it carries the melody and wraps around the groove with no virtuosic flourishes or anything that draws too much attention away from the instrumental. while of course not sounding too sappy or too aloof, just perfect for the storiest they told.
Steely Dan doesn't merely play jazz, rock, funk, etc. The band plays a great blend of these and many more musical genres. It requires a trained ear, and isn't meant for everyone. Just look at the plethora of stellar musicians who play on all their albums over the years. Steely Dan plays STEELY DAN! 😎
Fagen's throw-away songs are better than what most singers make a career out of, ha! no shit they actually threw this beauty in the trash heap? I can't believe it. Paul McCartney would have gotten together with Michael Jackson (or who ever) and made an album and accompanying video for MTV out of this witty little jewel
Another classically slick, no-holds-barred, syrupy smooth Dan production. My NEW favorite, for now, until his next project. Thank God this was saved from musical oblivion!
That chorus is unforgettable, I'm gonna hear it for days. Love that funky pedaling on the bass but it needs a solo - keys, guitar, sax, trumpet or perhaps trading fours or all at once like dixieland. Are worthy? yeah we are.
ya I agree, the drumming of this is elegant and tasty, just the right atmospherics for Donald's halting kinda insecure singing. Donald is a total amateur vocalist, but the musical background he creates is so bizarre and chaotic (lyrically) that it doesn't require Sarah Vaugh
@@musopaul5407 no, no, no, no that's Buddy Rich, i heard that The Donald was always a fan of his and actually begged him to sit in for the session and he did. how wonderful is that I ask? huh?

@LucklessPed 'Kulee baba' is one of the great Steely Dan tragedies in that it was never finished before SD imploded. As far as I know there are two versions around, this one (which is the closest to complete) and another demo with acoustic piano and no drums. Sadly neither of them are particularly good audio quality. You can find the other version on youtube. To make things worse, as far as I know the onlu copies around are mp3s so they sound even worse than the original demo tapes. Tragic.
Sounds like you ... but like before. And the words have changed. Mined you it's been awhile and just getting back to it. Wanted my kids to know your great music. But ... this sounds like a repeat of the past. Sorry and I'm still a fan!

I wholeheartedly agree! Fagen is the embodiment of the Steely Dan spirit, no one could've sang these kinds of cryptic and sarcastic songs as him.
I love Steely Dan. Always there for me thru good and bad times. God Bless S.D.

that's the sweet thing about music, it will never leave or betray you; one of the only few things in life that will always be there for you!
Right you are, Ms Tuesday Wells! SD doesn't play strictly jazz, rock, funk, etc. Steely Dan plays Steely Dan!
My 5 year old daughter absolutely loves this song. She's always singing the chorus. She's the best.

Keep playing good music for your kid(s) and listening and appreciating with them. I did with mine. It helps down the road, believe me.

The Brilliant drumming of Jeff Porcaro!!!!
Timeline.. I don't think so. Purdie is my guess
Yes it is Jeff Porcaro , I was in contact with Steve Kahn few years ago he played lead guitar on Gaucho he confirms that Jeff was the drummer !

Amazing song. Such a shame it never made it to the album.

It’s really weird hearing Donald Fagan’s normal voice in the “bring my voice down” after hearing almost exclusively his singing voice.
