  • We leave our wobbly pontoon mooring in Droitwich Spa and head up the Droitwich Junction Canal to Droitwich Spa Marina where we turn back and head all the way back to the River Severn.

    It's champion to see folks enjoying the Droitwich Canal which I helped to restore one summer back in the 70s. Thanks for sharing the view of the canal today.

    The m5 culvert was orginally built to take the body brook under the m5 in the 1960s when the m5 was constructed, but was designed to be just large enough to be able to fit a narrowboat through it as they had the future restoration of the canal in mind when they designed it. You probably would have noticed the brook flowing into the canal just before the culvert too as during restoration they diverted the brook into the canal, giving the canal a slight flow to it. I love your videos too by the way :)

    The use of the Time Lapse photography makes the Journey so much more enjoyable, as it shows just how work is involved in cruising the canals, While others use regular speed photography, they minimize the effect of the large amount of work involved in going through locks and various types of bridges which impedes the flow. You do an excellent job in portraying life on the canals while in the best possible light are honest in your opinions of various facilities along the route which is extremely important information for others to know. On Top of this you commend the efforts of people like the CRT and others in the maintaining and extending the Canal system.

      Glad you enjoy the timelapse effect! The decision to do it was one of practicality, but I do feel it does a better job of showing the actual work of the day! M

    I was going to say how impressive Michael's summary was at the end but then the out-takes reveal that it was the best of several hilarious attempts and Jo's editting. You would have come across more 'wich's' on the Shropshire Union. I hope you found the time to go round Nantwich, another fascinating historical town connected with the salt industry and with one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings in a small town.

    Have you considered mental cue cards for the thumbs up and subscribe malarky? Could use a memory palace technique using your boat. The more ludicrous the journey is the better the memory retention. Not sure which order your living room/kitchen/bathroom/bedroom comes in, but something roughly like:
    1. You board the boat. There's a video playing which is surrounded by decapitated thumbs pointing upwards.
    2. You enter the boat where there's a dusty old typewriter for you to type your comments.
    3. You walk into the next room guarded by William Shakespeare. You're handed a fountain pen to subscribe your name.
    4. You must then duck under a giant bell which is making an almighty racket.
    That kind of thing! Imagination is the limit and your hippocampus will thank you for it.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 лет назад

      Heh... it's not memory so much as nervousness coupled with tongue-tying, but good idea! M

    Quite a fun blog...very scenic in winter. And Thank You for the aside on Droitwich salt it was very interesting....shame Droitwich hasn't better moorings and facilities.... The M5 culvert was very low but not very interesting in the end just a long concrete box...more Lidl and laundry facilities needed along the canals

      The Droitwich Canals turned out to be a beautiful place to cruise. We are just not fans of mooring in pontoons, especially short ones! Always room for more chocolate croissants!

    Ah! No wonder I didn't understand what you meant that the pontoons were too short - I backed into the mooring spaces! It looks like it turned out to be a beautiful day! My favorite lock on the Droitwick Barge Canal was the Potters Mill lock. I'd love to live there!

    • @MinimalList

      Based on where our midline and stern line are placed I think backing in would have been about the same for us. Potter's Mill was very nice indeed! M

    Thank you for your video, we too find the locks and swing bridges very hard work. However, we are very puzzled! Why did you not come into our Marina at Droitwich where you could have done your laundry, Elsan and everything else? You could have moored up for the night and then just 4.5 hours back to Hawford and the Severn. You looked exhausted!

  • @malcolmelliott1876

    The Romans called the original settlement Salinae. Lovely shot at 9.25.
    Why didn't you go down to Worcester and up the bit of the Severn you missed last year?

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 лет назад

      Ah, thank you! We didn’t actually miss that section, we did Worcester to just below the junction with the Droitwich on the River Severn in vlog 114. We didn’t go up the lock though. J

    So… another flight of locks that Perseverance has missed out! And actually those three Hanbury locks are slightly unusual in having working side ponds...

    The 'real point' (if there is one) about the culvert is not so much the airdraft - which is known - it's that IF someone is coming down the staircase at the other end - the water level will rise and lift your boat up several inches - which might damage you and your boat.At least that was the story when we passed through not long after the junction canal was re-opened.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  5 лет назад

      Ah, that is an interesting point! Luckily we were the only boat on the move and we had a few inches to spare!
