  • We visited Surama, Guyana in January 2019 to talk to the village about parrot conservation and to survey their parrot population. The Wildlife Club joined us one afternoon for counting, and they brought their homed parrots. While eating crackers I quiz the children on parrot calls by playing recordings on my phone. When I get to a red-bellied macaw call, the homed red-bellied macaw responds. Just a few months ago she/he lost her/his mate to a hawk. Life is hard for parrots in Guyana, but this village has forbidden trapping years ago, but the numbers of parrots are still slow.
