I went to Bridgwater Carnival in the mid '70s. This is low key (!!) compared to then. No hard hats and fireproof overalls etc and holding the squibs above their heads facing inwards. I didn't know what was going to happen and stood right at the front. The guy went down the middle lighting the fires and the squibbers all lit up and held the fizzing fireworks above their heads. Then they swung them outwards and I had one right in front of me, the end of a broom handle with this massive firework going off in my face. I couldn't step back because the crowd behind me was so dense. It was terrifying and electrifying. A fantastic spectacle .... the whole street blazed in the light of showering sparks. We all survived. I recommend it if ever you get the opportunity. :)
