I gotta get over to the gulf so hard finding a day with calm enough seas for the east coast
Here I am shopping for a boat and worried about getting one big enough to go out in the gulf and you are out in kayaks. lol
I've had bonito many time with sautéed onion etc, I've had 30 mile/hr winds come out of nowhere expect the unexpected and I know you have the proper gear to include a bright light and whistle cause against the wind you wont be heard Great video
i LOVE the offshore trips! Honestly some of my favorite videos but i wanna see more than just Bonitas!! Cant wait to see you catch more tuna, big jacks or kingfish out there!
Fillet your Bonita wrap it in cheese cloth boil it in a pot of salted water dump it out and repeat. Take the fish out of the cheesecloth break it up and make tuna fish salad. It’s better than any canned tuna you can buy.
That’s the best bit of advice I’ve heard in a while, thanks! Strong fish can be too much sometimes but the meat, if prepared like you say but with added items and spices sounds great! I do like small strips of bonita behind jigs for flounder 😉
Did one in tuna salad and was really good, and i only boiled it once
I imagine soaking the Bonita in milk overnight would help draw the string flavor out. Like with venison.
I gotta get out of this hell hole in Chicago and down to Gulf Shores!!
Awesome, Awesome job Matt. That was such a good video. Thanks so much for sharing. Stay safe and keep it coming.
Thats the beauty of offshore fishing inna Kayak? Awesome video!
Never a dull moment always exciting when you post new content looking at kayak’s now can’t wait for the next video Sr. Always amazing 😁
Great video Matt!
Great video, Matt! Thanks!
I have to say I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but to be out that far on a kayak with a fish flipping around I’d be scared so much i LOVE the offshore trips! Honestly some of my favorite videos but i wanna see more than just Bonitas!! Cant wait to see you catch more tuna, big jacks or kingfish out there!
Fun day with the Bonita! Enjoyed your video, thanks
Looks like lots of fun!
Love the offshore kayak fishing trips! Conditions look pretty amazing. So many Bones!
Checkout the Nomad DTX 140 Floating Minnow in Silver Green Mackeral. It’s been catching just about everything here in SoCal from bass to Thresher Shark.
thanks again for the awesome video. looks like a really fun day. God bless and stay safe 🙏
I love this channel!!
Great vid. The bite was hot and heavy. Glad you had a blast out there. Have a wonderful day and see you on the next vid
That was a cool release at the end! Nice fishing day.
A great day on the water. Looks like work fishing from a kayak. Great video
There's one thing that is comon in your videos... Most of the times you go fishing early morning... I'd like to know if there's any kind special motivation. Is because the fish is more active in Dawn and dusk? I really appreciate your videos. Thanks a lot for sharing this type of videos.
My 50+ years of fishing experience tell me dawn and dusk are "best", but I've caught fish at all times of the day and night...it really just depends on a BUNCH of different factors. My thought is the best time to go is whenever you get a chance!
I'm preparing to head out on Lake Jordan this morning after some SLAB crappie. I'd rather be down on the gulf with you guys though.
Great video Matt. The Bonita are a whole lot better if you bleed out before icing.
Keep up the good work
Another way you might want to try Bonita is to season and cook it like a roast. ( Yes a beef roast) My granddad did this with my first Bonita and it's AWESOME.
GOOD JOB Matthew!
The Bonita were everywhere at the end of the Navarre pier early last week. Can’t wait to try to get on a blackfin tuna out there soon
WOW! Sure looked like fun!
I've eaten them broiled, grilled and in casseroles.prep your meat right and there a great eating fish, and yes it's fantastic for tuna salad and sandwich
Back in the 90’s I took my Dad to the gas rigs South of Mississippi and wore him out catching bobos. We also trolled past a sheet of drifting plywood and hooked a Mahi(dolphin, dorado). He asked “can we eat that” and I said “get it in the boat “
One day I'll have a kayak and tackle so I can catch some of those!!
Let's see you use a little bonita for live bait out there. You need a bait needle and thread for rigging them. You'll probably catch sharks but something else might surprise you. I'd use the smallest one you can get, or a blue runner/ hard tail would be awesome too.
Cool video, I love the offshore stuff, especially in the kayaks.
Hi Matt Bonito are very fast and good to eat as long as you bleed them and cut out the blood line they also make good strip bait while trolling never heard them called a bobo we call them false albacore in NC no matter what you call them they are very fun to catch.
Yes, you need to bleed right away when you catch them and they taste great.
Nice day fishing
Man, I got a little too excited watching somebody else catch like that. Nice morning
Only things bonitos are good for is to make chunks and belly strips for offshore fishing.
Great video Bama!! I want to tell you this because I like ya....be care full with boots in deep water, like a rock. Be safe my friend.
I'd do a little research on this...I've been told many times full waders will NOT make you sink, but hypothermia WILL kill you.
@@iancaen2977 out here in the PNW folks wear dry suits or wetsuit when kayaking. Water is always in the low 50's here in our ocean. I never thought about it until I had my daughter, now I'm getting a dry suit.
Bonito ceviche is great!
Just bleed them and cut out the super bloody meat.
Also grilled is pretty good.
Looked like a ton of fun. Just curious where it got a little “sketchy”…maybe you forgot to edit that part in? Just curious about that if you care to explain. haha
We dry then smoke for jerky in Hawaii
Ok, I have a Bonafide P127 too, and we get waves like that on my closest lake and the P127 just goes right through them. What’s fun is when a wake boat comes by with 2.5 to 3’ waves at less then 5 foot periods. The P127 goes right along!
The nicest thing I found is where he is at there are no boats! There is no bay or inlet at Navarre and no one wants to drive their boat a half hour to get there at 2-3 m.p.g.! A 12 to 13' kayak can handle most waves there as long as the wind cooperates.
@@jasonfulton77 I also have a trolling motor on mine to increase range.
@@billhobson6637 A trolling motor is mostly the same as what I have (Bixpy motor) I save it for emergency reasons mostly (running away from pop up storms in the keys)
What size reel/ rod are you running? I’m on the east coast and wanna take my PA12 out.
Bonito are so under-rated that it's not funny. So many people complain they don't taste very good - and they won't if they aren't bled/iced/cleaned/cooked properly. Any one of those will affect the final product and all too often it's a combination or all of these things happening.
Even if you only use them for bait it's a great way of getting it. They're an excellent bait for just about any kind of saltwater fishing.
It's sad/funny watching guys drive their boat straight through a school of bonito because they're on their way offshore to do some "serious" fishing.
Also, do you have any difficulty keeping your rod clean getting past the breakers?
Great video....well done...one thing bothering me is that "if " you fell in ...know its unlikely but if you fell in those boots would really mess with you.....just seems unsafe.....thanks
quick tid bit ...They call bonita /"mac tuna" in Australia
Beauty!
Try them on the fly rod!!
You got a workout 👍
Hey is that a St Croix rod you're using?
What an amazing day
What kind of diamond jig was that?
I have to say I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but to be out that far on a kayak with a fish flipping around I’d be scared so much about a shark coming up and flipping over my kayak. Lol!
These kayaks are very stable! I can easily stand in mine and it is still stable.
What kayak do you use
Yes Sir
what do you do if you hook a shark while on a kayak?
"Wrath often consumes what God gives husbands."
That looks like an albie
Wonder how it took to paddle/pedal that far out. Good workout I imagine...
Gettum!!
Nice Bo Bo Day!
How do you prep them?
Are they okay to freeze after filet?
How many miles from shore did you swim?
More than likely he went to the artificial reefs, RV Minton East, or West just a little over a mile from shore. You can even catch snapper there if you have a drop rig.
Fun kayak video and those fish look like a blast to catch. Only suggestion is reposition the crotch cam. Raise it ot put it on a pole behind you. Love your channel Beach Bum
Get urself a dry suit for winter man. Cold water is scary.
bleed them out good, we would fry them with onions and garlic, good eats.
always Bleed them Out
Cook up the belly meat and eat the back meat raw on the Bonito
I think ur gonna need a bigger boat..
Dude, what if an off shore wind blows you out to sea and you cannot paddle back against the wind? It happened on the west coast, and thankfully, at least this time, the Coast Guard found them. That's a big ocean out there, and I would at least bring some sort of safety GPS emergency signal. It sounds like at least you have a buddy out there. Is it worth risking your life?
Pedal kayaks are quite capable with wind.
As long as you have your phone on you you’re in good shape.
Had a buddy go out solo and got caught in a channel current, he just called the coast Gaurd and they got him quick, he just got scared.
If you bring a buddy with you then you’re in really good shape.
I’d only make offshore runs in a decent handling kayak, not in a river kayak. Not really risking your life.
@@fantomphoenix6170 Bet you can't paddle against a 20 mile per hour wind. Try it on a safe lake during a storm, be safe!
@@russbowman6801 pedal vs paddle is extremely different.
Strongest I kayaked in was 24mph winds, on a flat tide. In Vibe shearwater. Fisher like that for about 45 min before the heavy rain turned into a downpour
2-3ft chop so I was getting a bit of water coming over the bow but because it’s a kayak with scuppers it just drains.
If I was in a bigger kayak like a Jackson Knarr I would have stayed out to fish through the storm.
20 m.p.h. sustained wind is my shut off for offshore at slack tide. The waves are more important and having multiple propulsion options (Sail is the best! Electric propulsion, pedal drive, always bring paddle) are good backup options for going against the tide. Safety first, no fish is worth a life but I push it!
As one ocean kayak instructor said to our class, remember, you are a guest out there, not a part of the ocean.
Yall are crazy for being in the gulf in kayak and have no flag or lighting for others to see you.
Visiflag!! Think safety Mathew Brad

good video but wondering what was "sketchy". been a subscriber for a long time do you really need to click bait us?
Dude, dont wear boots out in the ocean. If you fall over those will fill with water & be really hard to pull off
Is it me or why is your Kayak swaying so much?
Never knew people ate Bonita in the Gulf. I know other areas are different but we always used them for bait or tossed em back.
