I lost my cool on this one. I'm not proud of it. If I had to do it over it again I would have been more diplomatic. I am human. I have bad days and get tired. This is authentic. Some of this is two years worth of dismissive comments coming out sideways. So I apologize for becoming too emotional on this one. However, no one is entitled to have their comment left up. I can choose which comments stay on my channel. I love this hobby and the opportunity everyone has given me to get here. As the channel has grown so has some of the trolls. So apologies again. Hey Randy. I’m way late to this party, but 100% agree with you. I build a lot of my gear, love DIY stuff, and small things like parts that measure the same as other brands sound different. Be it cables, capacitors, resistors, etc., etc., it can all make a difference. Sometimes small, sometimes more noticeable….
I’ve mentioned this quote before by Herb Reichert that goes something like, “We can usually hear a difference in measurements, but we can’t always measure what we hear”.
In an medium that has a lot of fake people who act like they are not, you sir, are the genuine article. People need to understand that you don’t have to agree with someone 100% all the time we are not robots. On the whole my outlook on this hobby aligns with how you and a few others go about doing reviews and the conclusions they come to. Keep it up see you on the zoom call.

I'm an IT guy and cables definitely make a difference in my field of work, but when it comes to digital transfer, either a cable can meet the specs or it can't. It's zeros and ones and nothing in between. If it meets the performance spec of a protocol, then getting a much more expensive cable won't make much of a difference, maybe even zero difference. Analog is a different story. There is no error correction in analog. It's just pure, so every step in quality can be noticeable, but of course, with all things, there is a diminishing return on investment.
In other words, I can see spending much more money on audiophile grade RCA cables, but an "audiophile grade" HDMI cable, USB cable, optical cable, especially usb makes me very skeptical and very suspicious of possible snake oil placebo madness going on because people do like to parrot and act superior to others. But I'm open to hear what people have to say.
I believe there is definitely some "the emperor is not wearing clothes" effect in the audio industry because when it gets to a certain level, it is very negligible. And I think audiophiles are especially susceptible to being smug arrogant idiots. I listen to RadioParadise and if you look at the comment section it is very clear that many audiophiles think their opinions are the gold standard even when it comes to something as subjective as taste in music. It's pretty insufferable. That's why I like Randy. He's a refreshing break from all of that.

This might be long but...
HDMI cables are about speed and quality of transfer since the information is digital, 1's and 0's. This is why CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6, etc. ethernet cabling exists and CAT6 on up support higher speeds than CAT5 and CAT5E. I do think there is a point of diminishing returns when it comes to HDMI cables though. As long as they are certified to support their rated speed and bandwidth there will be very little difference between a $15 6ft cable vs a $100+ 6ft cable, short of some sort of active processing being used.
Better analog cables, i.e. rca interconnects, absolutely will make a difference. After spending a decade in the AV and car audio industry there is a major difference between $15 cables and $50 cables and a similar jump from $50 to $100+ in quality of build, sound, noise rejection, and signal transfer. An OFC copper wire tinned with silver with a decent connector and shielding will show a massive difference in audio and video quality vs one that doesnt have any or all of those. We would demonstrate this using a Monster Cable M1000 S-video vs a similar priced M500 component cable.
Your take on Isoacoustics is spot on with my experience as well. Getting my center channel up and off of the glass shelf it was on made an extremely audible difference for the better.
Hands down, the best home audio channel out there.

I loosely weave 2 different gauges of zip cord 16,18 ga use shortest as possible like a cub scout. For car I wrap peel and stick (aluminum foil)around xover and leads. Yep the car is quieter. The home problem is reaction between fields , so confuse them and don't make them the same length or twist them,sorta..helps
HDMI Cables are digital, so there is likely little difference once you get up in the prices. That said, there is data loss on the ultra cheap ones and that causes deterioration of the quality of audio and video in the cheap cables. I believe you when you said you heard a difference in a $45 cable. But going further up, you likely wont hear any difference. The difference between RCA and HDMI is RCA cables are all analogue, where HDMI's are digital. Analogue cables definitely can make a difference in sound quality. I honestly think difference is the better word. Not one is better than the other. It is how we hear it and what we like as individuals. I love your channel Randy. It's helped me get balanced perspective on many products.

I think the apology is unnecessary. Your channel is your opinion and that is the way it should be. You have the right to change your opinion like everyone else. I like the fact you get to try a lot of new items and let us know your OPINION on them. I don't have a strong opinion on cables other than they have to be adequate for the job given. If more expensive are better both form and function?...then bring em on...not withstanding diminishing returns of course. In my opinion, powered speakers are so popular because you don't have the hassle of finding the right amplifier. The amps are already optimized for the speakers. For hi fi enthusiasts who are not so hard core, it's just much simpler.
They're only optimised for their power output and to measure as flat as possible with low distortion. That's all you woke need to do when choosing an amplifier for your speakers.
Never thought I would ever buy Audioquest optical and USB cables. I mean ever. But, I got a DO 200 dac, and bought cinnamons just for peace of mind. Best, D.

HDMI works or it doesn’t. Simple as that, and audioquest can not prove different. The science shows perception is a human argument. Power cables can not make a difference. Interconnects can make a difference, but low cost shielded cables are all that is needed. Speaker cables can make a difference, but again low cost will show all the benefit that is possible. We engineers that work with cables for much more demanding electronics do know something and paying high dollars for cables is plain ridiculous!

Yep. I fell for it and it cost me thousands. In my garage there is a large storage container full of cables going back decades in purchases. Been there done that with all the listening test comparisons. Did I hear differences, absolutely I did. Was the difference better or different? Well, therein lays the $64 question. Placebo effect, could be.
I can tell you this though, my eyes and the eyes of a friend were opened attending a CES audio show here in vegas years ago. Both of us agreed hands down best in sound was a system cabled with ordinary non shielded copper speaker wires and interconnect cabling. We had the chance to look behind the equipment to see what was being used and knew they had to be using high end stuff to get that kind of sound!! And boom, ordinary good ole copper wires!! That was a wow moment. Other rooms had speaker wires the size of pipelines and couldn’t compare.
Find the components that sound good to you and use some 99.99% pure oxygen free copper cables wrapped in clear plastic shielding (just cuz that shiny copper looks so good!) and call it a day.
Just my experience anyway.

Yet they also say you MUST use "certain types" of cables. Thanks for being honest about sound being what matters.
A Receiver is an integrated amp with a built radio...what you discribed is an 'integrated amp' not a receiver...they were all the rage in early '80's & making a bit of a comeback...some good receivers on the market...hence the name receiver...receives radio as well as an integrated amplifier...i enjoy your vidz,watched most of them...i use the Concept 20's & 30's with the Pioneer SC-LX904 AV 11 chanell amp with 2 seperate/independent subwoofer outputs ,not just wired in parallel...expensive but brilliant with an Emotiva BasX A2 power amp for serious music.....i use Supra Lo-Rad Silver Plated mains cables & plugs/connectors with Chord C-Line & Chord Crimson cables....Supra & Audioquest cat8 cables used with broadband...better quality broadband using them with no interference.....don't let the troll's bother you,they annoy everyone Randy....

I got back into vinyl at 50 and bought Emotive equipment and it was based on your reviews and channel keep up the great work, we’re all human….Many blessings sir.
Made my own cables with "basic" RCA gold plated solderable and super generic RG58 coaxial cable from a roll, compared it to some Name Brand 4-figure interconnect made with silver litz wire. I could not tell 'em apart on Meridian pre-amp/processor and Miller & Kreisel speakers... neither could 4 of my friends, 2 of 'em are semi-pro musicians. I will personally approach any cable claims with prejudice because of my electronics background. I've also made speaker cable from 4-wire power cables and also really fine stranded speaker cable from twisted ethernet wires; These could not be more different "electrically" but they have compareable area and they sound the same to me... and all my friends... and the guys in the Hi-Fi store did not want to participate in a blind test but would gladly sell me well oiled speaker cables. If you are not able to separate 2 very different cable pairs in a double blind test you do not need to care about cables just buy/make the cable that makes you happy. If you do not blind test challenge yourself, you are probably deluding yourself... which is fine, each to their own.

I have a Moon I5 integrated amplifier and a McIntosh mcd7007 cd player. When I got Audioquest interconnects, it made a great difference. My friend got the same for his Nad system and it made no difference at all.

I was using 2.5mm² (14 AWG) OFC for my speaker cables. I didn't believe that cables made much of a difference until I tried 4mm² (12 AWG) OFC speaker cables. There was a definite difference for the better. You cannot give an opinion based on some else's review unless you have tested it for yourself. Otherwise you are just repeating it parrot fashion.
Randy, What I like about your channel is your honesty and passion and I have no intention to stop watching. You stepped into the hornets' nest between facts and opinion. The wire aficionados say that hearing a difference is enough, while the science folks need data to prove it. What we don't see enough of is people trying a blind test. Two people and a blindfold are all it takes. Guess correctly 8 out of 10 times from 30 seconds of your favorite track and you have data to move forward. I tried it with speaker cables(18 gauge zip cord vs. $150 -10 gauge monster cable) and could not tell a difference and it frustrated the hell out of me. The placebo effect is real and quantifiable but like you said, it is your money, your music, so enjoy it however you want.
Many audiophiles and computer enthusiasts of all kinds can be a bit similar in their obsessive hyper-analysis, inflated ego and severe overestimation of their intelligence. They are often keyboard warriors too. I think the takeaway is ‘empty vessels make the loudest sound’ - there’s people that research, buy, and make it to the next stage: enjoying it. Then there’s those that don’t make it to that stage, and are forever stuck in the “I want/need” phase that they can never achieve as they fall down the rabbit hole and prefer to bicker , troll and harass in the process… it’s sad really.

I played chocolate chip trip on reg speaker wire, then plugged in oxygen free nice fancy cables, huge difference. There is no doubt in my mind that cables make a difference.

I had a very expensive cable between my CD transport and DAC. I tried a cable made out of CAT5, from a friend of mine. The CAT5 was so much better that I was quite shocked. You didn't have to concentrate to see which was better, the CAT5 just up and smacked you one.
Speaker cables and some other interconnects, I could never hear any differences.
I bet you stayed with the CAT5, right? That's my whole point is use what you or anyone else thinks is good. You came up with your own conclusions and found something right for you.

I was curious about your outbreak of temper, but anyway, no troll has the right to badmouth you or similar! So, lose your temper as often as you must! You are a really fine guy, and you have a great sense of honor. In my eyes that makes you great - besides your knowledge, you share with us.
By the way: A character that is able to serve on an undersea vessel cannot have a thin ego at all. To think that I would stay only one week in a cage on the ground of the sea would be devastating to me, although I am pretty tough myself. So, don´t bother about losing your temper here! There are times when the barrel is full and runs over! You are not a stupid robot without feelings!

I think it's important to remember that we're all stuck with a really bad processor...our brain. It's just awful at sound, color, smell and ESPECIALLY memory. I despise cilantro. My best friend loves it. Now, there's a very good reason for that, related to the presence or absence of a particular gene cluster and aldehydes. The upshot remains, however, that when a mechanical engineer and a four-year-old both look at a complex machine, they don't actually see the same thing. Hear it, enjoy it, be at peace. No one can ever hear with your brain but you.
Really felt for you. I do believe good quality cables improve the quality of the sound. I have even changed the cable on my Fluance RT85. I’m probably going to change all the cables to Cord. Currently most are Canare Premium. Keep up the great work and just get rid of the haters.
Keep doing what you do. The majority are represented by your number of subscribers. Also, I'm glad you're exploring "snake oil" like cables and isolation. TBH, some manufacturers do sell snake oil, but, from my experience, Audioquest and ISO Acoustics are the real deal.

I think the "I don't care" attitude when it comes to cables or any gear is a better attitude. It can help keep things in perspective.
As for this cable talk in particular my take is this: First of all, Audioquest is....let's just say I don't trust them at all! I have tried to sit in on demos and they won't let me because I am skeptical. To me that is closer to cult than cable manufacture trying to sell product. I don't do cults. Audioquest get their bulk cable from the same place I do as an end user (I make my own). I do the heat shrink, techflex and all that just because I want to. Doing all that cost me about $19 to make one 10 foot speaker cable with all the trimmings. That same cable they try to sell for around $400+!
The best way to explore cables is as you suggest, get a couple and try them at home in your own rig, room, etc and see if you notice a difference and if you don't or don't like the cables for some reason, return them. The problem is that is all well and good, but to my knowledge Audioquest (and many other cable makes) do NOT allow for returns. They tell you to just sell them or whatever. Some cables makes offer "trade up" programs, but that only further irritates things.
There is one unique way of doing this. There is a company called The Cable Company. They have a "cable lending program" where you can try out cables and return them. Basically you pay 5% of the price of the cable and that is not refundable (Personally, I don't like that) so this can get expensive real quick, but at least you are not paying full retail for a cable that doesn't work for you with no recourse. If it is over $50 or 5 lbs shipping is free. You get to keep the cables and play with then for just under 2 weeks, which realistically should be plenty of time. I have zero, make that negative 100 interest in cables, but this library thing may work for some.
Is getting upset about cables worth it? NO! I ignore all of it. I don't care.
Cables are no different than any other item in the chain. Unless a component or other piece is tested using a controlled, blind test, it's all opinion. People say, "I know what I hear" but that's 100% subjective and isn't useful. It's called faith. Also, cables are one of, if not the highest margin item in a stereo system.

@@AmbientWanderer You are correct, there is no scientific evidence to any claims about cables or for that matter little wood blocks and other audio trinkets. That is partly why I was not successful in getting into any demo from Audioquest. They would put out the invite, but at the door would tell me I am too skeptical and therefore it would be a waste of my time to attend. That is a red flag to me. I was even told that it would be better for me to purchase on faith and try it in my own system. While that is the best way to do it, the problem is that there is no return for refund, so it comes back around to either one has faith or not. To be fair, I was invited to a demo from Wire World, but could not fit it into my schedule. However, we talked and they gave me a deal to try at home and they also had a "sale" at the time and gave me a 30 day full refund. I also appreciated their time spent with me even if there was some sales pitch involved (there was, but they knew they had met their match and willingly made the offer I described, you have to respect that). I did purchase some interconnects from them and use them to this day, but not for the reasons one might think. I put them up against some Monoprice premium interconnects and heard zero sonic difference, however I kept the WireWorld cables because the terminators are far superior to the Monoprice ones. (The Monoprice terminators could rip the guts out of one's gear with the grip they have). Also the WireWorld cables did not cost twice the amount or half or even a quarter of the entire system. Would they "measure" different from the Monoprice cables? Maybe a little bit, but it would be completely undetected by the human ear.
Controlled cable demos are also not to be trusted, it is all about who is in control. How do we know they are using some trickery such as changing a setting on some piece of gear or even using a different recording of the same music or whatever. This happens in blind tests all the time. I'd rather see them show and explain the set up and play the music with say standard interconnects and then in front of everyone, swap out said interconnects with one of theirs showing everything and then touching nothing and play the exact same music in the exact same format. That would be a start. News flash, we will never see that happen for the very reason you stated, it can't be proven scientifically and cable manufactures know that.
The only acceptable "controlled" cable demo is in ones own place, own room on ones own system.

Some of these people are narcissists and they have an Uber fragile ego and a deep seeded & pathological desire to be right! If you disagree in any way with the incredibly powerful narrative in their mind they can become extremely offended and angry.
With narcissists if you don’t agree with them, often it’s as if you’ve threatened their entire existence. Seriously.
Back to cables. I understand implicitly why people resent allot of these companies and feel like most or all cables are pure snake oil.
I’ve never heard much of a difference with cables other than pure silver in a turntable(silver tonearm wires, silver rcas & silver wires in the head shell. 100% made a sonic difference. Just silver wires in the head shell made no difference. Also, the silver rcas where wired into the turntable.
Pretty epic and much smoother than what the title says. My wife made me change the cables today...treble was all wrong.

I'm guessing there was a bit of hassle going on in the Live Stream (maybe someone from a forum showing up and acting up?).
You're entitled to share your frustration, sometimes in life it gets too much, especially if you feel the ones shouting loudest aren't being constructive or fair. I always try to interact online the way I would talking to someone's face.
The gatekeeping, judgement and snobbery in hi-fi land seems to be the same as on some corners of the watch forums (which I have more experience of). Sigh.

Speaking of cables, why are shielded rg6 coaxial cables not used in audio? Solid, copper, shielded, made to keep signal clean? Right? Without going all out, and terminating them properly, I did use them, but because of that, not using them properly, the copper core did break at the end, Edison didn’t quit the first time his light bulb filament broke … does anybody else have experience using rg6 for speaker wire?

I got my Moondrop Dawn dongle dac yesterday. I have adjustable .78 cables so I switched to the 4.4 plug and it really sounds nice, Bass cam back vs. the $9 dongle dac I started with.

Didn’t watch the stream so I have no idea what set you off. Thats the danger of live streams though. People with inflexible differing opinions or people that like to troll are going to show up. Others who do live streams have come to enforce a strict policy of booting the trolls early because it isn’t worth the mental strain of dealing with them even the well intentioned ones. Your channel is popular because you add real value to the community and are entertaining. I know that watching you has caused me to dip my toes back into audio equipment after a 20 year break. Keep on trucking and don’t stress over this. Thanks for all you do!

I'm still working out what I want for my first system and if you think a few extra quid on cables makes a bit of difference then that's what i'll get as I trust your opinion. Randy, I don’t think we’ve seen you really lose it. When you get tired & beat down - have some of us locals drop by & just hang out while you create. RUclips and video editing seems such a lonely existence. Loved the ‘unboxings’ during your live stream, that glass, those headphones & my god, those speakers! Have a good week.
There's no problem with just telling us about your experience, that's rather the point of channels like this one, but I am also interested in what the people that sell these cables claim that they have done to improve their cable above others. I assume they don't just leave it at saying "this is better" and actually have an explanation for why it's better. It's especially interesting hearing what flaws there are in cables that transmit digital signals, as that's a more complex issue than parts that deal with analogue signals.
It's always better to try to understand why than to just be content with an observation.
Late to the party but here is my experience. A few years ago I worked with an audio/video dealer - who I have a long history with - on buying a new stereo system. It was the most money I ever spent on stereo gear - around $10k total. He installed it in my room, and after playing around with speaker placement, he told me I'll be back in a few weeks with some cables. I thought the system sounded really good, and was skeptical that cables would make a difference. Well a few weeks later he shows up with his partner and they start. We crank up a few of my favorite songs and listen to them. Change the cables - and repeat. From stock cables to better cables - absolutely heard a difference. From better to even better - absolutely heard a difference - and I am talking $200 for a pair of 3 meter speakers - so nothing crazy. The dealer jumped to $600 speakers - and I heard .... no difference. I asked his partner what he thought and he said "with this room, and this gear, the system sounded the best with the $200 cables" - I bought them and they still sound great to me.

Hey Randy, I was watching this today April 2nd thinking it was today's live stream LoL...I don't think it was noticable that you lost your cool. It's not like you freaked out screaming, cussing and throwing stuff LoL... Everyone totally understands how tough the internet can be and how there are so many crummy people out there saying inappropriate things.

Hi, Randy fully agree with your assessment and understand you lost your cool. Been in HiFi for over 50 years and meet some People that knew everything better. Best to ignore them its boils down to personal taste and if you are happy with your set up that is the most important aspect. In the end, listening to Music should be nob.1 .I meet people who forget to listen to Music they only look for the latest Gear.

Randy, subscribed second time under my real name! Love your channel. A lot of snake oil is sold in the audio industry. One cheap/free service that Best Buy does is have a sound room. I spent about two hours occupying our local one comparing Denon/marantz/pioneer/Yamaha and Arcam. They had B&w, Kef, and martin logan speakers. The Arcam was the best sounding receiver I have listened to. Speaker wise I liked the Kef q950s better than anything else they had. I suggest anyone that is on the fence go sit and listen and see what they like.
I use a Fiio BTA30 Pro BT Transmitter to both my DA9 and Hifiman headphone, while the DA9 hook into Dayton Audio BST-1 Bass Transducer on my chair. played Through The Never concert....😊☺️ 🤘🏻....you should try 👍🏻
