Thanks Greg, been mulling over this pedal for a while. Your review was clear and straight to the point. The pedal is definitely on my Christmas wish list now.😊
Excellent video and review. Appreciate your genuine nature and not trying to sell it, just sharing and playing and letting us decide. My sole use is recording. Leaning more towards an Origin Effects BassRig Super Vintage, which seems a better than the Ampeg to me... Thanks!!!
Glad it was helpful! I try to be as impartial as possible in my review. I do like this pedal a lot for live playing. I usually go straight from my audio interface into Logic when recording though. I've always been impressed with any Origin Effects gear I've tried 👍
Extremely helpful and thorough review. Very professional. Like you said, there’s so many options. I’m still searching for the ultimate bass tone (for 10 years now 😀) but there are some great tones here that I will definitely sculpt, most likely the preamp on - SGT on - Cab sim 115 on - B15 on with some very light grit, that’s my favorite so far, lots more to explore, thanks so much for producing such an excellent review, cheers, Niall 🎸
No worries Niall, I tried your setting and liked it. It was a good place to start for me. Like you said, there are some really great tones in this pedal and I'm sure many players can get near to finding that perfect tone. Then you have to remember that the 'perfect tone' might not work so well in the mix!
@@GregsBassShed Hi Greg, I really like my ampeg portaflex pf-500 amp and two cabinets.Really happy with it..Great review..Thanks again for your efforts
@@Tony21TT Hello there "Greg's Bass Shed" I have 1 questions on Ampeg Di pedal 1, Dose this Ampeg Di Pedal Works hand to hand with the "DSM & Humboldt Simplifier Bass Amp/Cab Sim" & with the "Boss Duol Cube Bass LX" ? If the answer is "Yes" which comes 1st and 2nd and so. On it's chronological order? Thank you so much !!!
I'm looking at matching this up to a powered speaker as I don't particularly like just using IEM's on a gig - I like to feel some 'air' at the back of me. However, I still want the system to be portable. What speaker do you think would make a good pairing? Thanks for the review. I've been watching as many as I can on the SGT; everyone is giving it really positive reviews.
I've had mine since they came out, the two pop out knobs are just to set the IR cabs to the desired output - basically to level them against each other, the other one sets the input level for auxiliary devices. - but volume can also be determined by the auxiliary device. I've heard other reviewers raise concerns about them, but I've not had to touch them since a day after getting the pedal, they have remained in and not been any issue at all.
Great review Greg, all very clear and sounds like a great preamp. However, like most reviews it only demos the sound going straight to the desk and not through an amp and cab. I play small to medium size gigs and go through my GK Fusion amp and Eich cab. In your opinion is it worth investing in this pedal, or something similar? Will it give me similar sounds to the ones you're getting? Thanks
The main reason I didn’t use an amp in the review is so you can hear the pure sound of a pedal. You have a different amp to me so there isn’t much point you hearing it through my amp. If you use a fairly neural EQ setting on your amp then you’ll still hear the characteristic tones of this pedal. If playing with an amp, I would usually give a feed to front of house from the XLR out in the pedal and use my amp mainly for onstage monitoring. If you wanted some of those grit tones from this pedal then I would say it’s worth getting for you.
Thanks for the review. Been looking to get one of these but not entirely sure yet still as I have an Ampeg rocket bass 210 combo with the SGT circuit already on it. Might still get some use for practice/recording and when using borrowed backline.
Brilliant, honest, down to earth review. Great tones and nearly endless options. But as you state the crunch is when the sound engineers hear it at a gig. Which, may I add, will make a great second review. Thanks Greg. Keep Groovin’ Bryn
This is working well for me, but recommend a separate compressor. I had to spend a little time with it to dial it in, set levels, etc. Emulates tube squish and breakup pretty good.
Check your internet connection. You might be streaming it at very low quality. That does sometimes happen. Looks cool this end! If you want movie quality though, I’ll give you details of where to send me the most up to date gear! Sorry not to tick all your boxes on a free video! 😀
Sorry I forgot. I will do this as it is a combination that I will use in the future. I tried it live on it's own at a large venue without an amp last week and was very happy!
I've always had a Boss tuner at the start of my chain on my pedalboard so I use that to tune and mute. Now I only need the tuner and the Ampeg pedal!. Yes it doesn't have these features but not an issue for me. It's not perfect but I like it!
I really like this Ampeg pedal but my TC Electronic Spectradrive pedal is also great. I suppose it depends what sounds you are after but it appears like you've got something that you are happy with which is the important thing .
Hi Rob these beats were recorded by a friend (luckily I know a few great drummers!) for my Riff Meister Boot Camp and I used a couple of them in this review.
@Greg's Bass Shed Thanks Gregg reason I ask was that just recently purchased a Nux drum looper for practice although a good pedal like all drum loopers the beats don't seem to be right. This pedal you are able to down load beats or songs onto so been trying to find somewhere for some realistic drum beats
@@robcooper4031 I’ve looked online a lot over the years. You can find some on RUclips but in the end went down the route of recording decent drummers and then looping their beats! I should start putting sone drum loop packs out. Might he popular!

Hi, I will be using this pedal to go straight into the PA WITHOUT an amp. The sound crew can take an XLR straight out of the pedal. You can also use this pedal with an amp if you want.
What do you mean by hand to hand? They're both preamps and they both emulate an svt. So if you already owm the bs you don't need the sgt unless you prefer it for some reason.
@NayGezana Why do you want to use two preamp pedals with the same overall purpose of sounding like an Ampeg, at the same time? They don't need to work hand-in-hand (which is the phrase you were looking for).
refreshing review that wasn't a bunch of slapping pinging and popping. really showcased the pedal for more practical and useable applications
Cheers Ross, glad I hit the mark with the review. I'd rather that then showing off my playing prowess! 😀

Simple and excellent review! I'm going to buy one and use it with a FRFR speaker. I heard that you can get a studio sound live.
Glad you liked it. I'm still using this pedal all the time and love it!

Love my Ampeg BA-115! Pairs perfectly with flatwounds on the Fender Squier Jaguar. Now if only I could play my short scale like that Wyman dude.

Great review, Greg.
By the way, the pedal works great for upright bass with piezo pickup too.

Good idea about a second review! I'll let you know how the soundcheck goes!
Great review as always Greg! Question, does it emulate that deep 4x10 punch of an SVT Pro? Thx Mate!
You can pretty much dial in any Ampeg tone and I think the B12 and SVT sounds are great on it.
Thank U brother for this honest review 🙏, And i have a question with all do respect...
Glad you liked it

Good tip! I don't use compressors so I didn't have this issue. I had to spend a fair amount of time with the pedal too to find what I liked!
Great video! Just to make sure...you can turn the volume up/down without it impacting the FOH?
Unless I'm misunderstanding you, level does affect FOH if you are 'DI-ing' straight out the pedal to FOH.
like the the grit tone!
Yeah I'm impressed by the grit Rog
Im thinking of buying one today. I have boss tuner, compressor and overdrive already. Will the boss overdrive be overkill or awesome?

No mute
No tuner
Active bass will easily overdrive the input

What’s a good modeler in this price range that can handle the hot input from active pickups?
I think I'll just stick to my Sansamp VT bass/Spectra comp combination and get the same sounds. No need for IRs at this point in my life lol.
