Most certainly you can. Here in India and Tibet you will rarely see lay people without a mala around their neck or wrist. Usually in their hand being use. Feel free to wear mala and whatever "chanting energy" is put into it can be felt. I'm a tantric hindu but I have taken some Tibetan Buddhist empowerment and I have several different malas. My main mala for personal mantra I used for so many years and recite so many mantra with when I merely touch it and/or wear it I feel my calm. Most definitely only you can make benefit from wearing mala beads. Master Sheng Yen has nice vedio here on RUclips e called "What does it mean to wear Buddha beads?" I recommend this and all of his vedios. He was kind, gentle and very wise master. 🙏

Don't listen to the other person. Catholicism is not Buddhism or Hinduism, and therefore should have no say in where to get them. This whitewashes the culture they originate from. I would say get them from a Buddhist or Hindu organization, or make your own.

Although 108 beads of mala,there are other malas that have a different amount of beads. Does that make them inappropriate for prayers?
