--
Thousands of years in the making, the Olympics began as part of a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus in the rural Greek town of Olympia. But how did it become the greatest show of sporting excellence on earth? Armand D’Angour explains the evolution of the Olympics.

I am so glad the Olympic games were revived. I wish more of such things happened.
4 years ago lol
@@Notorious-AP 1 minute ago lol
OHM-968692 the olympics are every 4 years its cool lol
Like build a "Neo Pompei"
they were not revived. Some capitalist commercialized sports event happens to bear the same name
The Olympic Committee should bring back the poetry event of the Summer games.
Thomas Harlovic true
Agreed!
Ah nothing reminds me of ancient Greece like a 1940s-like TV broadcast.
Same
They had color TV in the 40's?
+alex nes aah yes nothing bad happened in the 40s especially the fist half of the 40s, it was truly the most blissful and wonderful time in human history... right?
(heavy sarcasm)
XDDDDD
go winter olympics!!!!!
You guys had lots of fun making this. The animation with the music reminds me so much of old CN shows. Talk about nostalgia.
we don't value strength as a society. we encourage cowardice and pussification, and the strong are torn down by the weak.
The Olympic spirit will never die.
@Louie Moffatt Shut up.
😂
391 AD they shut down the games. In 405 AD they murdered the last librarian, Hypatia, in Alexandria and burned the Seripium. In 529 AD they closed the Academy of Athens and sent the scholars into exile. The Christians of late antiquity turned off a lot of lights prior the dark ages.
+CHAS1422 That's why we had the dark ages. Who turned out the lights? Why the Christians turned them out.
It is not clear who killed Hypatia, and you could blame many pagan and christian thinkers who were very anvious of her.
Also, the alexandrian library was destroyed by muslims fer in the middle ages.
Christians probably destroyed some pagan books, but they admired ancient thinkers and preserved their works in monasteries.
+Joseph Ang History must always be taught in absolute truths. Patriarch Cyril and his Lackey Peter, along with a mob of Christians were responsible for the death of Hypatia, (daughter of Theon), and there is no question among historians . Theophilus, mentor of Cyril, burned the Seripium to the ground in a show of Christian dominion a decade earlier. Orestes, the last of the secular governors of Alexandria, was deposed and exiled soon after the death of his friend Hypatia. The library had no protection and was lost in history after these events. All literary focus after Christian hegemony was established in Alexandria at the beginning of the 5th century was Theological drivel. These events were almost 200 years prior to the blood and devastation wrought by the invading Muslims. I doubt the 4th century Christians had any respect for preserving pagan works on geometry, or neoplatonism. Christianity is best when it submits to secular laws and secular science. It is worst when theological laws and education are the laws of the land.
+CHAS1422 >.> Catholicism, which was the only brand of Christianity at the time, was a government. And prior to that it was a doomsday cult. Neither of which are relevant to the majority of religious practices in the present. Religion is nothing but a form of government. As such they're going to do things governments throughout history have done. Including forcefully controlling information through the destruction of historical works and siccing their people on minorities to distract them from poor governance. It irks me how many people can't see that. Worse that they can't see the difference between one religious institution and another. Seriously it's like saying Sweden is responsible for exterminating native Americans because the US and Sweden are both Democracies.
Watching this today as the Olympic Tokyo 2020 kicks off! 😁😁 Just so touched to see the spirit of the people merge into one, no hate, no division! Love that sportsmanship! ❤️

Well... this didn't aged like wine
You forgot to explain that they started the olympics to honor Nike, the goddess of victory and competition

@Jocelyn Bencosme Everything is based on Greek mythology😹
you know, its interesting how so many companies and places in the modern age are influenced by acient greek and Roman names.
No... zeus the king of gods
Some say if u promote adidas shoes, u will get Nike’s attention
The way you did the audio without bass was creative... but annoying
+Aaron Fawcett It was meant to sound like an old, early 20th century news broadcast. I don't know what they sounded like when they were new, but that's basically what some of them sound like now.
+Aaron Fawcett I agree!! should've done it for a little bit then go back to normal... its just annoying for a long period of time
I just turned on the subtitles lol
"now there's a winning streak, if ever WE'VE seen one..."

Hi
Incredible that they've got nothing on the Trials of Salem
And the winners were granted with 'free meals for life,' I recall reading that somewhere. A boon that was sometimes extended to that winner's immediate family, again I read that somewhere. So excellence in foot racing eventually migrated to excellence to other endeavors like, science, math .... there's a pattern here.
we don't value strength as a society. we encourage cowardice and pussification, and the strong are torn down by the weak.
So the Olympiads began just 23 years before the founding of Rome in 753 BC (of which the Roman calendar was based) and lasted for millenia (more than 11 centuries at least). They saw the Founding of Rome (as a Kingdom), the Roman Republic and most of the Roman Empire.
Eric William Rosa now compare it with other parts of world like india egypt china iran Mayans like olympics saw a fall of lot of dynasties and empire over the time
The teacher is showing us this in our online classes lol and I’m here commenting 😀

This animation style is so good
Needless to mention that the Ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedonia was among the participants in the Olympic Games, together with all other Greek City States and Kingdoms of Greece with Hellenic ancestry and background.
Their ancestry through the legendary line of Hercules, linked them directly to Dorians and made them as Greek as Ionians, Aeolians, Achaeans and the other ethnic groups of Greece.
this video came in our maths quiz competition 😃
Lulu M What does this have anything to do with math?

Be productive rather than destructive
They should bring back music and literature for the Olympics.
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinking of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching, but
You're too shy to say it
Inside, we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
(Ooh, give you up)
(Ooh, give you up)
Never gonna give, never gonna give
(Give you up)
Never gonna give, never gonna give
(Give you up)
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching, but

Very nice
Doing this in class 😭😭😭
I was hoping for a video about Olympus. I read the title wrong...
I loved this video
then it was made for folks like you
Don't blame Christianity. Emperor Constantine of the Byzantine Empire was also a Christian but he was okay with the Olympics. Plus, 98% of modern Greeks are Christians since the Roman times. (making it the 2nd most Christian nation not counting the Vatican).
OMG the music
Why does this sound like a 1920s documentary
I love the olyimpics its so cool to learn where they come from
New subscriber :D
Brilliant history about the olympics. It seems like by looking at the Paris olympics opening, honouring of pagan gods is coming back.

In my school, we learned the Olympic game story, and we like everyone like the story my class like the story my teacher, Miss Rivera, Miss Cochran, everyone like you and Miss calroy 0:16
A lot of interesting facts. I wonder: why does a man think that tear away his clothes will help him during a competition?
Its got to do with Ancient Greek culture and their appreciation of the male physique.
It is said that men from different cities used to compete and when the winner to his homeland they used to destroy the protecting walls of the city. That's because they were proud for his win and sure enough they have someone with strong mind and body to protect the land from enemies 🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷
Can u give information on ancient Olympic

Virgil was a roman poet
The olympics existed well into the Roman Empire.
And only Greeks participated.
should have mentioned baron rober pieere de coubertine as well. he was the one to initiate the modern olympics
