I can't believe I've had this one tucked away in the vaults for several years, and completely forgot to use the technique myself!
Personally, it's an absolute game-changer, and definitely the best technique you never hear about (or at least I haven't seen it in many places). It is, as far as I can tell, based on 2D canvas painting techniques, but sadly I can't remember where I found this little nugget of information.
As its an older video please excuse the video quality. One day I may get around to re-doing it, but I think this really covers it nicely at the moment.

Very neat trick, wouldn’t have thought about it tbh.

I've found varnish works the same way and since varnish self levels it results in a very smooth surface as well.

Yep, anything that dries slightly slower than paint will work nicely 👌

Do you know if citadel contrast medium is essentially glaze medium or is it extremely different?
Certainly it doesnt have a 1 hour drying time haha

It's not far off, if its kept thin, then it does act like a glaze medium, but if you put it on too thick it'll start to take on contrast properties a bit more.

May I ask which glaze medium you were using please?

Usually its vallejo glaze medium, but most glaze mediums will work, you just have to experiment with how quick it dries (or how slow in some cases) just to get used to it.
