Interesting. I've heard people praise this one a few times but I've never been a huge Green Arrow fan so I just kinda brushed it off. I do love most things involving any of the Lanterns so I'll have to check it out. Edit: also, if I had to pick my own answer for the title, I'd probably go with the Fourth World/New Gods
I will warn you. Hal Jordan was significantly different in his earlier incarnations before Geoff Johns wrote him. The Green Lantern(s) you see in GL/GA will not seem like the ones you know today at all.
It is most assuredly worth the read. Ewan stated a hundred times that it is dated....hell 45-47 years old but it is very good if you can look past it which I did last year. It was beautifully drawn and spot on for the cultural tinder fire the US was back in those days. (If you put the issues the US has today in this comic you'd have the same thing). For DC to take a leap and let those two men make this comic was ballsy back then to say the least.
I think your view of what Marvel was putting out in the 70s is a little... well, wrong. Captain America gave up his persona because of Watergate. Spider-man's best friend went through drug addiction in an earlier arc that the CCA refused to put their stamp on, but Stan and the bullpen felt it was an important enough story to tell that they went against the Authority and published it anyways, leading to seismic changes in what was and wasn't allowed under the rules, thus the issue with Speedy that was referenced had the CCA stamp. Look, I love both companies, but there is always a back and forth about who is leading the way socially, and in the 70s Marvel was constantly pushing social commentary and the issues of the time, and I'm sorry but GL & GA was a reaction to what Marvel was doing at the time, not a departure from it.
Also do you remember that scene were that Blackman talks down to green lantern saying he’s never done anything for them and ignoring that he saved the planet several times. That reminds me of the social commentary feminists use
Another great video! Thanks! I feel that this is the defining run of DCs Bronze age along with Jack Kirby's Fourth World ( Mister Miracle, New Gods & Forever People) Would you have any interest in making a video on those comics?
Would be a nice to have a spin-off with Hal being a Trump Supporter and Queen being a Bernie supporter and have them have civil dialogue without it coming across as pandering to the Left or hating the Right. Basically, the opposite of Marvel
this channels videos are getting slightly more and more like some of the other big comicbook channels where they kind of read out a wordsoup of an essay, I love Ewan but i also love just straight up opinions off the top of his head. (still liking the video though because Ewans a cool boy and can pull off the essay content even if i don't like it usually)
I knew about this Was alive then (grade school few comics read between months BUT due to Family Member working for Government............................)
Why is it just such a "cool" comic just because there costumes are both green, really, it's like that thing in Batman V Superman, just because Superman's mother is called "Martha" and also Batman's mother is named "Martha" they just become instant best friend... Comic logic.
It'sYourPal Silly they have opposite world views. Batman vs superman was the worst movie ever that's now comic logic just shitty not understanding humans
It’s really up for debate the first 3. BUT CIVIL WAR!? Why? What did civil war ever do for the comics other than make it congested with unnecessary event books
As an addendum, Neal Adams thinks that the Earth is expanding. Which automatically removes a few kudos points for me. I just can not get that out of my head anymore. As if I have this urge to keep Adams' skills as an illustrator marked off by his pseudoscientific lunacy.
Green Lantern/Green Arrow would be a good TV series, based on that series of comics.
I totally agree! All they would have to do is update the stories slightly to current day events.
@@tediousmaximus1067 I'd accept a period piece as well.
Absolutely brilliant analysis and video, definitely one of the most underrated runs in comic history and always been a personal favourite of mine.
This is one of the best videos on this channel. Good job.
One of my all time favorite comics arcs.....Courageous work at the time. Thanks for showcasing in this video.
More single issue/storyline breakdowns like this, please. This was great.

Ewan is whatculture!
More of this, WhatCulture! Please!

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Ollie is always so very funny.
His team-up with GL is so much hilarious.
Green arrow is one of my favorites and this is one of my favorite storylines he’s ever been in
I have this entire run in my collection :)
Dam only now moments when the DC sale ends do I find this.

what no one realized is that marvel jack kirby characters are actually suppose to be connected to the dc ones
I love this channel sooo much 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
To answer you....Yes. This is a very important comic series! I'm so glad your reviewing it!
good job, Ewan.
My ward is a junkie
(shakes head) "MY WARD SPEEDY IS A JUNKIE!" 8-O

Ur TheDuke Yes, because trying to perform unity and open dialogue is such a bad thing!
Singelin Well that was never the intention at all. If he was more polite I would have gladly fixed it.
I love how the first asshole deleted his comment. Not man enough to keep it up
I dont know if i could see Hal supporting Trump

Great commentary.
If you were there, you understand... This series influenced my outlook on society then, and it's still relevant.
The series tone, plot, and concept is closer to Easy Rider.
I become more into Hal Jordan after reading this book but Oliver Queen made me more leaning towards the left and being Liberal.
I knew about this Was alive then (grade school few comics read between months BUT due to Family Member working for Government............................)
Great video
Hey What Culture. 😎
Batman: Endgame needs to be here. Batman died for real, for good, FOR A WHOLE ISSUE and it was influential AF. I cried when I read it!
Garfield
Always mean to read this one
A lot of people don’t realize that green arrow and Greenlantern are friends and are an original duo
its funny that going forward dc hasnt hilghted rgar hal n olivers have a deep relationship
dc comics !!!
Interesting I always saw Jordan as more of an anarchist
Why
And what you mean anarchist
FOR SOME REASON MY BROTHER HATES GREEN LANTERN AND THE FLASH I'M JUST LIKE WTF

Comic logic.

mil-yer
No
Pretty sure superman’s first issue is the most important
Most expensive.
To answer the question in the title: No. This isn't even as important as 'God Loves, Man Kills'.
Remianen Did you even watch the video?
I did, even with the caveats at the beginning. Just because I don't agree doesn't mean I didn't get the gist of their thesis.
Is it a DC comic?
Blackest Night? LOL....
Remianen I gotcha. Just checking lol
No.
_Anything with_ *_Darkseed_* _is better_ 😏
Comics Misexplained I also like Darksaide
"Darkseid*
TheVetoSkreeemer No one says "Darkseid" anymore. It is Darksaide or Darkseed or bust
Benjamin Saunders Welll, his name is still the same on comics.
Benjamin Saunders Just because the morons can't spell him
'Classical' indeed ... these comics had issues!
*_Your mother._*
Watchmen.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns.
Batman: The Killing Joke.
Marvel's Civil War.
These are all way more important that this comic.
It’s really up for debate the first 3. BUT CIVIL WAR!? Why? What did civil war ever do for the comics other than make it congested with unnecessary event books
Civil War is totally forgetable
cut out civil war and you have a stronger list. Civil War was trash and even many comic writers hated it
As an addendum, Neal Adams thinks that the Earth is expanding. Which automatically removes a few kudos points for me. I just can not get that out of my head anymore. As if I have this urge to keep Adams' skills as an illustrator marked off by his pseudoscientific lunacy.
First
Alexander Bisby piss off
Do any none white people work at whatculture? Or any actual comic fans
No
Del Delly - Why not? This series is honestly one of the most important comics ever! Have you ever read it? It’s insanely good.
