I'm really surprised that you didn't mention Robin/Dick Grayson at all... He was quintessential to comic books because he was both the original sidekick and the original child super hero. He basically created those trends and paved the way to many more sidekick/child heroes, many of them becoming iconic on their own rights. He's also one of the most prominent examples of hero legacy. Comic book history owes a lot to him, definitely should be up there with those 5.

Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are obviously the big three as far as influence goes. If I had to choose a fourth it would be the Hulk and for a fifth probably Wonder Woman.
I would like to add Wolverine as an honorable mention. My reasons other than his popularity are that he was highly influential in giving healing abilities to superheroes and he was among the first if not THE first superhero that was known to kill. Even though they kept it off screen, I still remember the X-Men comic where Wolverine stealth kills a guard with Storm and Nightcrawler gasping in shock. At that time, superheroes weren't known to ever kill their enemies which I think paved the way for a lot of anti-heroes we know today.

Wow! I actually agree with this 5-person list. PS: Although I don't care for Wonder Women, you're selling her short. To this day, most comic book readers prefer their female heros to be non-physical. To this day, Wonder Women uses her lasso, but she also uses her fists. She really was a trail blazer.
Outside of teams, I would agree with Captain America making the list, but if teams were counted, I believe the Fantastic Four definitely left an impact.
Superman, Batman and Spider-Man are easily the three most iconic and well known superheroes of all time and have been for the longest time! More recently however other heroes have been made much more popular: Hulk, Wolverine, Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor.

All the super hero stereotypes we know came from these characters. Also got the most popular marvel mutant and the very first black super hero.
I still consider Superman the first superhero, even though the concept was influenced by *pulp heroes* like the ones you've mentioned. Superman also owes his existence to *John Carter of Mars* as much as the pulp heroes of old.
In my opinion, these are the most influential superheroes. Superman- The beacon of hope, the true face of superheroes, Truth, Justice, and The American Way! Captain America- The first war hero, the biggest underdog story, the embodiment of America, the symbol of leadership, liberty, and truth. Ever since that hitler cover, one of the most influential heroes. Batman- The definitive face of vengeance. A symbol of good. The true embodiment of dark superheroes. And the staple for heroes gadgets, bases, vehicles etc. Also created the definitive rogues gallery Spiderman- The embodiment of teenage superheroes, the first teenage superhero to not be a sidekick. The first superhero with real life problems. The first and staple for relatable superheroes. The most popular superhero. Also responsible for the most iconic alter suit in the symbiotic black suit. Wonder Woman- The embodiment of female superheroes, the embodiment of female strength. The first half god superhero. The daughter of zeus. The definitive mythology superhero Hulk- The first lonely superhero, one of marvels first releatable heroes, the first true monster hero. The embodiment of science esc heroes and The embodiment and staple of strength and strong superheroes. Robin- The first sidekick, the definitive sidekick, the first teenage superhero/sidekick. Hes the only thing that comes to your mind when you think of sidekick. Flash- The definitive fast superhero, the staple of speed in the superhero genre, the staple of science experiment superheroes abilities. The fourth most iconic rogues gallery in fiction. Wolverine- The staple, embodiment, and face of the anti hero. The face of the xmen, the face of bad ass superheroes. The most iconic superhero weapon. The most iconic metal in fiction. Captain Marvel/Shazam. The first kid superhero. The first transformation superhero. The staple of the lighting logo. And invented one of the words we use on a regular bases. “Shazam!”
Out of all these heroes, the many people in real life who misunderstands Batman as only “a crimefighter who takes justice to his own hands” is scary. They might as well look up to Rorschach more.
There are characters I absolutely LOVE that are not on this. That being said, I cannot and would not attempt to argue your choices. The fact that you can explain other characters by saying stuff like "He's like Superman, but..." just speaks to how iconic he is. And you could the same for every character you listed here. Great job. Let's expand this list one of these days.
Hulk should be number 6 because he's one of the superheros where people who don't read comics know him dating back to the late 70s when the tv show aired. because he because a part of pop culture.
This is just an idea I want to put out there but perhaps in the last decade or so, Iron Man may be on a list of important or influential characters. Maybe not so much as far as comics are concerned but certainly on the movie side and in the way that the public views superheroes now. I don’t think Tony trumps any of these characters but I think his impact on movies may be something to consider.
Hulk needed to be on the list. He was the first anti hero technically. In addition, he was the raw embodiment of what most kids and fans of comics felt like deep down. Sure, Superman represent what you should be, Batman represented the perfection as a man we could all strive to be, Spiderman represented being relatable because he was a teen. But Hulk is what you feel like when everything sucks and nothing is going your way and you just want to get your voice across. Hulk Smash!!!! We have all felt that way at some point or another. And similar to Superman being a symbol to always rise to the occasion of what the story needs, Hulk is the same but with his strength and anger (which is why is powers is a plot device just as much as Superman was as a character). Hulk represents if you are anger and fed up enough, there is nothing you cant do, nothing can stand in your way. Hulk is our metephorical release.
Nailed it. Good job. These are, without a doubt, the top five most important superheroes. No whatabouts... no arguments... if you had to pick five, these are it.
100% agree with this list. They were literally the first superheroes I heard about or read when I was a kid. One hero not mentioned here that I felt belonged is the Punisher who represents what many of us think, but don't want to say. He was the first anti-hero I was introduced to. Before him, heroes were gentle, never killed (intentionally anyway), and always has a lesson to teach. Frank Castle was so different and his skull symbol is used everywhere specially in the world's militaries.
I love this Channel. IMO it’s my hometown guy made in Cleveland Superman which many don’t know he came from Cleveland, then Batman, then Wolverine, then Captain America, then Iron Man, then Spiderman etc. BTW if you ever visit Cleveland find the Superman statue in the Airport and it has a huge wall of history around it and 2 TVs playing classic Superman moments. It’s awesome.
Im Domitris im the original marvel founder and dc comics founder truely I remember this years ago. I had quite a breakthrough especially cause im used to starting the companies from scratch and I’ve always been the original credit for comics in history
Superman and Spider-Man. Superman gave birth to the genre by being the first widely successful superhero property. Without this one character, the modern superhero might not exist. While Superman kickstarted the genre, 25 years later along came Spider-Man to show there was a huge demand for characters with pathos. So Spider-Man gave the genre texture and complex characterizations. In short, Superman got the meat on the grill, Spider-Man did the seasoning and the fans got to eat well.
So how long till you do history of Arno_Stark Iron Man, Ezekiel Stane, Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Whiplash, War Machine and Pepper Potts AKA Rescue?
Yup I wholeheartedly agree with this list. You just cannot deny these are the greatest. I do think that both the X-men and Iron Man have contributed equally though. The X-men brought the identity of being born different into comics for people to identify with. And honestly you have to give credit to Iron Man simply due to the massive popularity he has had in the comic movie genre. That character single-handedly made comic movies mainstream on a whole other level. People who never even picked up a comic book before became fans of the characters. Much of that can be attributed to RDJ of course and his incredible portrait. Even Christopher Nolan said that casting is the greatest of all time. I might be a little biased because I grew up reading comics in the 80s when Iron Man was really good and written really well. I still love the issue where he fought Hulk and used up all his power in one single punch knocking Hulk out, but it fried his armor. That was so epic to read as a kid.
Is "the most influential" the same thing as "the Most Important"? Was Frankenstein's creation a Superhero? Did he effect comic books (before he was an actual character in some. As you mentioned, what about pulp and radio characters: The Shadow, Doc Savage, The Avenger, Zorro, The Phantom, Conan, Flash Gordon, Buck Rodgers, or Tarzan? As always thank you so very much for the videos. Most of my favorites didn't have capes, but they did have masks. And to me one of the most influentialis The Ghost Who Walks, The Phantom.
The Shadow should be number 1 everything he credits Batman for was taken from The Shadow even the first Batman story was a swipe. The Shadow was popular so Street &Smith created Doc Savage then The Avenger. If there was no Shadow,Doc Savage ,John Carter and Tarzan so many pulp & comic book heroes wouldn't exist or be totally different.
The list is solid and true. That said for me on a personal level I would replace Cap with Ororo/Storm. She opened up possibilities that none of the others touched on. For the first time, as a kid in the '70s there was a strong talented powerful black woman superhero.
Swap Cap America out for Robin and you have the correct list. CA was just made as a way to have another Supes - "How do we do make him different?" "Lets inject him...." Instead, Robin would have been a better choice, given he was the OG sidekick.
@@extraordinarygamer937One version might be, but he has had many iterations over time (kinda think youre forgetting about Jason Todd here, or is he too boring as well?), as well as 'pioneering' the sidekick role (which Captain USofA has also copied). Captain USofA has had the same characteristics the whole way through....which meets the definition of lame more so.
I was expecting to see Super Hero like Zorro or Tarzan in this video. I was in the impression we would dive into the early History of Comic Book History and the Super Hero who were influencial to pave way for others to follow. Mentioning The Phantom is good but I think he has more under his belt than most can realized.
I wrote paper in college sociology class, it was entirely about Superman as being modern folklore. I interviewed a lot of pretty intense comic book and superman geeks. I got an A.
Another great video, but a couple of corrections need to be inserted (I don't know if RUclips has a "messenger" feature, but if it did, I would send this over privately). 1) Captain America Comics #1, the issue with Cap punching Hitler, debuted in March of 1941. The U.S. entered the war several months later after Pearl Harbor in December. I believe it was stated in the video that America had been at war for a year already when Captain America debuted, but the U.S. was not yet officially at war with Germany yet. 2) It was stated that Wonder Woman came out four years before women were allowed to vote. This is definitely not true, as women's suffrage was achieved more than 20 years earlier.
A very fair and obvious list. I'd think Robin, Hulk, Flash, Iron Man, Wolverine should be next five (order not super important) for equally obvious reasons. After that the rankings are much more difficult choices.
You said America was already a year into WW2 when Cap debuted... no, we didn't join until December 1941, a full year after. Also women got the right to vote across the board in the US in 1920, not "4 years after WW's debute" (1944). Not sure where you get those dates from.

The fact that you can explain other characters by saying stuff like "He's like Superman, but..." just speaks to how iconic he is. And you could the same for every character you listed here. Great job. Let's expand this list one of these days.
Batman by far for me
Hulk should be number 6 because he's one of the superheros where people who don't read comics know him dating back to the late 70s when the tv show aired. because he because a part of pop culture.
The phantom.
He started it all plus he's very underrated
Hulk is our metephorical release.
wow, great video. thanks so much
People hate superman too much
I’ll always love Superman
I just don't dig the fact that he always wins
Couldn't agree more.
@edittzz4175 I don't hate him, but when you know for a certainty a character is always going to win, it gets old
@edittzz4175 a lot of people call him boring
Nailed it.
Thank you. Great content.
Mt. Rushmore of superheroes:
Superman
Batman
Spiderman
Wonderwoman
Alpha clash is awesome, very good gameplay and the quality is the cards are the best I have seen.
The one and only Fly-Man! Wait I mean Spider-Man!
Bombastic Bag Man
The Peeping Prowler
Superman is the goat of all superheros
Wonder Woman inspired the creation of many modern female heroes/actions characters other media as well
Strange you put Hulk and Iron Man in the thumbnail but their not in the list of the video itself
That opening theme really rocks!
Can't wait to start my collection
Im Domitris im the original marvel founder and dc comics founder truely I remember this years ago. I had quite a breakthrough especially cause im used to starting the companies from scratch and I’ve always been the original credit for comics in history
Perfect list
How long till you do history of the Thunderbolts team and the Young Avengers since they're slowly forming in the MCU?
dont understand why people say iron man was c tier before his movie, he was iconic.
When determining the first superhero it stands to reason one must determine when the term superhero was first penned.
❤ Totally agree with this list!
Great list 🎉🎉 ❤
Also do most important storylines. There are stories that are still important to this day like flash of two earths
Cool Sound. Epic pictures. I like it. 😏
I'd also consider characters like Sherlock Holmes and Dracula to be in the same vein as Superman.
@@TheGuzeinbuick well at that point you'd have to start defining what a superhero is. I wouldn't consider Dracula a superhero for instance.
This would be a crazy team up!
The DC trinity is definitely the most iconic and important
Pretty straight forward with who most wouldve chosen. The 6th in my opinion would be The Hulk. But those 5 are clearly the right choices.
The list is undeniable
The list is solid and true. That said for me on a personal level I would replace Cap with Ororo/Storm. She opened up possibilities that none of the others touched on. For the first time, as a kid in the '70s there was a strong talented powerful black woman superhero.
Swap Cap America out for Robin and you have the correct list. CA was just made as a way to have another Supes - "How do we do make him different?" "Lets inject him...."
Instead, Robin would have been a better choice, given he was the OG sidekick.
Robin is Lame as hell Lmao
@@extraordinarygamer937One version might be, but he has had many iterations over time (kinda think youre forgetting about Jason Todd here, or is he too boring as well?), as well as 'pioneering' the sidekick role (which Captain USofA has also copied). Captain USofA has had the same characteristics the whole way through....which meets the definition of lame more so.
@@TheSykobananahow is robin an important character he’s just less mature batman
1st: love these videos. 2nd: That's not Bill FInger, it's Steve Ditko.
I hate to say it but Superman is the one.
I think black panther should have been on this list because he was the first black superhero. Other than that this was a good story.
that's Right Bill first, Bob Last. R.I.P Bill Finger.
I’ve only read Allstar Superman , kingdom come & red son . Any recommendations for good Superman books?
I like Captain America but before Marvel Studios or MCU him & The Avengers weren’t that popular, I would replace him with the X-Men
I would replace him with the Hulk. Otherwise, I agree. I think people forget that Capt America and the Avengers weren't a big deal before the MCU.
Can you make a how powerful is cyclops (Scott Summers) video
This is a solid list. I wouldn’t change it.
Do a part 2
Great list. Probably would’ve picked the same in my opinion
im suprised he chose wonder woman over the flash tbh
Could've used some Lynda Carter clips when discussing Wonder Woman!
For me the Fantastic Four and more importantly Ben Grimm has been my favorite hero since childhood in the 90s. Still is.
Most important Marvel book if there was no Fantastic Four would anything have followed ?Also the FF has things that Doc Savage had first.
I agree with your list though I’m wondering what would have been your 6th and third marvel
You said America was already a year into WW2 when Cap debuted... no, we didn't join until December 1941, a full year after. Also women got the right to vote across the board in the US in 1920, not "4 years after WW's debute" (1944). Not sure where you get those dates from.
