The hotel is located in Downtown San Diego, less than 10 minutes driving from San Diego Airport, less than a mile from San Diego's historic Gaslamp district, and almost adjacent to the San Diego convention center. The Hyatt Manchester is one of the tallest hotels in Downtown San Diego (40 floors) and one of San Diego's most iconic hotels along the bay-front. Almost every picture of Downtown San Diego has the Hyatt in it.
The Hyatt Manchester is a big hotel with 1,628 guest rooms -- so it has a "big" convention hotel feel. The club lounge on the 33rd floor is one of the biggest Hyatt lounges that I've been in (it seats 180). With the hotels great location on the San Diego Bayfront, the view is definitely one of the main reasons to stay here. It's also really close to the convention center, which makes it great if you're in San Diego for a convention.
We checked in at about 4pm... while there was a line, it was pretty short. They had a separate check-in line for "VIP Diamond and Platinum" members. Check-in was pretty painless... I was given my room-keys and directed to the elevators for the "Harbor Tower." The hotel has two towers, the Harbor Tower, and the Seaport Tower. To get up to the guest rooms you have to use the keycard in the elevator, and there are two sets of elevators to reach the different floors in the hotel.
As a Diamond member we were "upgraded" to a Club Room on the 29th floor. Honestly I'm not sure what makes it an upgraded room, other than it has a nice view? It seemed like a regular room to me with a couple extra bottles of water for "VIP" members. The room itself at 340 sq ft was relatively nice, with a pleasant seating area by the window. The only negative of the room is our previous houskeeper clearly didn't do a good job cleaning the bathroom as there were quite a few hairs (not ours) in the bathroom tub, floor, and sink area.
The Club Lounge itself is quite nice, with sweeping views towards Point Loma. The evening appetizers and deserts were simply "OK." I recently stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Phoenix, and you could easily have dinner in their club lounge, so maybe I had high expectations. When I rolled in to the club lounge at 8:40pm during "desert hour" there weren't ANY deserts out. I had to ask the lounge staff to bring out more deserts. That's pretty lame if you ask me.
The hotel has two swimming pools, the "main" pool of the fourth floor, full of kids in the summer and really much too small, and the "adult" pool on the third floor which is much more "serene" but also quite small. There is a really neat "sport court" area on the fourth floor with a basketball court, volley ball court, and two tennis courts. The sporting courts were a pretty neat and unique amenity for a downtown hotel. The gym is huge, well appointed, and with windows facing the outside.

I watched a couple of your reviews so far. Amazing details and everything I want to know. Seeing a thousand pictures of the hotels can't compare to this one video. It tells me the vibe of the hotel and what's around the hotel that can't be easily described. It really helps me to make my hotel choices. Thank you.

I stayed there in early December 2014. I got a room on an upper floor with a decent view for about $90 a night (plus tax), which was a good price. I was just checking for next month (February 2022). During the week the rooms are now about $350+ per night, plus tax. I'll be taking a socially distant trip to San Diego then, driving from L.A. That rate was too high for me to stomach. Up the road, at the Wyndham Bayside, I found a city view room for $150 per night, plus tax. Took that instead.

I liked the demonstrations you were doing when you were showing off the recreational activities outside at the hotel. Did you pull out any of the other giant Jenga pieces off camera? Also, the views look quite awesome from the room!

+Scottman895 Travel I got to show off my poor basketball skills! :). I didnt want to put the whole Jenga back together.. so I just carefully slid that one piece back in :)

I've stayed at the Manchester Grand Hyatt at least 6 times. It is my favorite Marina District hotel in San Diego.
Far be it from me to question Topher but if you compare any hotel to Aviara (Park Hyatt), you are going to be disappointed. Aviara is a 5 diamond resort and is among the finest hotels anywhere. Meanwhile the Manchester Grand Hyatt is a beautiful hotel with tons of amenities but it is not Aviara.
Finding hairs in my bathroom would have upset me too. I hope you reported it and that they made it up to you.

It's a "good" hotel for sure.. I just have high standards for the price :)

@@YellowProductions I hear you but part of the price is the neighborhood. I once paid almost $500 a night for a Courtyard by Marriott in San Francisco. Downtown SD hotels tend to be expensive.

I had the EXACT same issue when I stayed there. My room was not clean. I wrote a review and the gave my Hyatt points so that was good. But considering that was the first time I stayed in a Hyatt, not good. Dust everywhere and the bathroom was not clean. They actually moved me and the second room had hair sll over the wall in the shower and the same dust and particles. Gross. It's a shame because the staff was great. Loved eating at Sallys in the evening. It was just beautiful sitting outside looking at the water.

I stay at the Whyndham when I visit san diego, I think the rooms are better there. I really wanted to stay at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, but not so sure anymore after seeing the rooms.

The Conference Suite is the standard suite upgrade there and it's probably the biggest introductory sweet I have ever seen. Only down side about this hotel is no balconies. If it had a balcony it would be 5 stars to me. You grade too harshly. All you care about is free food and then you are picky about that. If a run down Hyatt place is 1 star and an average Hyatt Place is a two star then you are saying this hotel is only one star better than average. Get outta here with that.

DO NOT STAY HERE. Very overrated for the price. Be warned parking is $40/ day $60/day for valet. Coffee is $8.
The only nice part is the sky bar opens at 4 to 11 pm
