For the 1st story, the RPG youtuber Seth Skorkowsky has used the term “roleplay terrorist” to refer to players who deliberately hold up roleplaying and/or deliberately cause in-game problems unless they get their way. It sounds like that’s what the op of that story is talking about.
I don't think that's what that term is about, because aren't roleplay terrorists doing it so that they get their way in real life? They're sabotaging the game so they can get something they want either in real life, or in the game. The player didn't seem to be doing it for an external purpose other than being horny lol
The thing that kills me in the 2nd to last story is how much of a hypocrite the DM was being! When **they** have multiple hours of technical issues or shows up late, there's no apologies, no explanation. However, if a player is sick (and still playing) or has their **own** technical issues, they're suspended? Yeah, I'd be dipping from that game too.
@@ArcCaravan Just as likely that the DM went something like "They can't play without me, but the rest of us can play without a couple of them. I'm the most important, I need special treatment." Followed by several pages worth of "Me! Me!"
Second Story: That doesn't sound like "not meshing with the rest of the group". It sounds more like they didn't give OP a chance to try to mesh in the first place, and then maybe because of that, the DM wanted to make OP a sort of player-driven villain for the story? Or maybe there was more to the murder than the DM let on, but it didn't really get fleshed out going forward? In any event, the group essentially ghosting OP over basically nothing is garbage, and I'm glad to hear that they are still playing with a different group now.
Yeah, the nice but shallow relationship part kinda sticks with me. They may be nice people but I don't think they're friends with OP the way OP's friends with them. Sad they had to find out this way though
I always raise an eyebrow at "the whole group is bad" stories. What are the odds that OP is omitting some very crucial context, that would help explain the conclusions that the group has come to?
Fourth Story: Literally all the DM had to do was show the player-characters that his DMPC had the things they all needed to resolve their problems, or even grant them the solutions temporarily (restore the one guy's memories partially, or restore OP's eye for a few moments), before ripping them away and telling them he could solve all their problems if they did what he wanted. That's how you hook in characters with a dude that powerful and potentially railroad them into doing his bidding (though that would probably only work for so long, until the PCs get stronger and decide they want to pursue their goals in a normal fashion rather than be handed everything for this weird guy, no matter how sexy his wife is).
I'm not sure which story is conically worse but i think the one where the op pretty much got ghosted by his team was pretty bad, it just felt like that friend group just wanted to ditch op but could not bring themselves to tell him that he just wasn't invited and given an explanation.
That 2nd one could have been a great start to an RP heavy plot once okayed with the OP. "Player,l I had this great idea. Remember that performer you had to meet? He's gonna get murdered & the blame put on your PC by enemie(s) I can't tell you about now so there's some mystery for you. So you'll return for the session after & need to convince (maybe) your fellow team and/or authorities you did not do it (probably needing to evade capture or even break out of jail) and then hunt to bring the real murderer to justice & figure out why they did this. Is that okay with you? Fine if you'd rather not, I have tons of ideas I can go with besides this one. Just thought you might find it fun."
Voicechanger AI - There are reasons why so many people use subtitles when palying video games. Add the unreliability of discord voice chat to that and... Yeah that's going to be a nightmare.
Vindictive DM story: I am SO glad OP still had the mind to say he was leaving even after being blught a 3d model, cuz that’s the kind of thing that kept me in a game WAY too long for my own good. I wasn’t bought stuff (in fact, I wouldn’t start buying art commissions until a few months after that table), but the DM was always saying “You know, your cleric is the ONLY reason the party has lived so long!” The system was pathfinder 1e, for reference. But then, when it came for me to plan backups (cuz we were fighting instant death spells and OP magic items), and I mentioned “I should probably make another cleric”, I was told “oh the party doesn’t NEED a cleric”. Which, felt weird. Eventually I made a Slayer (think Rogue/Ranger mixed into a single class), but it was denied cuz of my race choice (Skinwalker, aka a Half Werewolf) cuz there weren’t any werewolves in the adventure. Even though we kinda, had already dealt with other forms of lycanthropy earlier in the campaign. Instead, I was suggested to play an NPC reclassed to be semi-Holy (a thing that I was trying to avoid, but gave in on). It was an OKAY concept but I had no real investment once I started playing him. Doesn’t help that the DM tried to say I could play my original concept (the slayer) barely 5-15 minutes before session. When I would still have to get his help with magic items and everything for a LEVEL 9 CHARACTER. Ultimately, between no fun with that NPC, being pretty useless (cuz I couldn’t even use my feats cuz “Your God wouldn’t approve”) and my own deteriorating mental health, I judt ghosted the game slowly (being sick and losing my voice for nearly a month and a half REALLY helped with this process). I felt bad for a bit, cuz I was the only player from session 1 whi had stayed the entire game and attended every session (the only other person from session 1 still had to miss a lot of sessions after the first 7 or 8 months, and I found out was possibly kicked after an argument with the DM a year after I left). Good on OP for not staying at a table. Smarter player than I was 2 years ago.
I remember with an old group I played with, once when I missed a session they told me that my pacifist, lawful neutral wizard who hates unnecessary violence murdered a family of giants. I tried to get them to admit that it was just a joke and... they wouldn't until the DM eventually caved. They new certain things made me upset, and insinuating that my character would act like that against my will was one of them. I left the group a while after that due to other incidents just stacking up. This wasnt the last time they made a joke out of making my character do things against my will, and unfortinately this was the only time where it actually was a joke... at least I hope it was
First Story: So there've been stories in here about people on large roleplay discord servers or forums that are more single-player focused, and that's kind of what it sounds like this DM is trying to emulate. It's weird to do something like that for a small group of people; I feel like they should just set up their own server and start running a play-by-post sort of big magical high school RP with a bunch of people they can do this kind of stuff with.
What I find funny is that the first story and second could intersect so much better. Being wounded and out of action for a bit is a good in-game excuse for an absent player for a session or two. I think that would be one of my go-to handwaves along with they have a hangover, or that natured called them (for when a session ends with party nowhere near civilization).

I'm not fond of DMs hand waving away character/backstory conflicts. I had a character who was blind and had been previously wounded in such a way that made her unfortunately unable to have children, which broke up her prior relationship, made her become reclusive, and also quite motherly towards characters younger than her. At one point he threw a dragon at us that we clearly weren't going to beat even at our level, so to protect the party I teleported us to another plane, which happened to be the plane of life/sort of animal heaven I guess? And the DM just announced that all of us were healed completely, including any injuries we'd had in the past (such as the tabaxi companion we had with us, who had in his backstory had a large portion of his tail chopped off and it was now fully regrown). My character already had a very tenuous connection to the party as there were multiple "That Guy"/main character players that the DM just didn't stop (a few dropped out over time and one got kicked, but two problem players did stay and somehow made it to the end of the campaign) so I settled for her reasoning being curiosity about the world and a desire to help others, despite my irritation at being the butt of jokes quite frequently and the party talking about sacrificing the kid I'd adopted "because you never interact with him anyway" (after I had started staying on mute because one of the problem players told me to shut up and "stop being the main character" when I simply tried to give an opinion on a plan that was being discussed before saying it was a joke when I got upset because I rarely ever interjected due to my shyness, and the DM didn't even respond when I messaged him about my feelings being hurt by that comment). My character was pretty much stripped of her significant backstory elements, I didn't get to explore using blindsight like I wanted to because it was just magically fixed by teleporting the party into this deus ex machina healing plane, and the other players took over the spotlight to the point where I felt more like a background character who had to fight to have her character arc finished before the end of the campaign Gonna be honest it wasn't even exactly a good campaign so I'm sure most people would say I should've left, but at the time I was dating the DM and he had convinced me to join, and any time I was close to quitting he'd throw powerful loot at me to the point I probably could've TPK'ed the party had I finally snapped and chose PvP like I think he was hoping I would. I was invested in my character because I had put a lot of work into her, so I'm glad that overall her story got sort of finished, but even years later I'm still upset that she was robbed of significant character elements on a whim like that, and I'm still super timid about roleplay even though I'm playing with a much better group who are fine with me being relatively silent and had checked in during the first couple of sessions to make sure I didn't feel like I was being sidelined. It's been a bit harder to write a backstory for my current character that I'm happy with so I've been mostly content to stay in the background this time and just listen to their roleplay as they're all very good, and they've encouraged me to talk but don't push the subject after I expressed my discomfort in doing so. I do feel a bit like I'm not contributing to the game outside of combat but they've reassured me that it's fine and im really glad to have them even if it's difficult to really let loose because of my introduction to DnD. The worst paralysis story. As a DM I understand that a lot of the times you do have to give dialogue for multiple NPC's and occasionally you must RP a conversation between NPC's; but this is way too much. This is what you do in your own basement on your own time if you feel the need. Not in a game with others.
I have a general question about D&D creatures... What *is* a treant and how exactly do they work? 🤔 I'm a new DM and I'm curious on if I can maybe work that creature into my own game somehow, depending on how they work 😅
The vindictive DM story with where the Fighter was trying to dash and never got to participate in the combat, that just seems weird. Ranged characters have a limit on how far their weapons / spells are effective. Surely the Fighter character could have closed that effective gap within a few combat rounds by dashing, isn't that the point? To give melee builds a way to actively engage in ranged fighting tactical setups by only losing the initial round or two. The OP infers that the combat was protracted and still they couldn't actually reach the enemy.
To clarify. Im the writer of that RPGH and the main thing is i basically had no good or effective range for anything in my arsenal. If i was about to get close enough to an enemy to maybe do a melee attack. Other ranged attackers would have already dealt with said enemy.
@@Sn8kezz - Hey, i wasn't actually questioning your retelling of the story, it was more that I was pointing out that it seemed like your GM was holding his finger on the scale for that sequence, as I can't imagine a legitimate reason for why you couldn't have closed to melee distance within a few combat rounds, at the most. If nothing else, he should have just 'massaged' the encounter and said that you closed to attack range after a few loops though everyone's turns so that you had the opportunity to at least feel like you were a part of the fight, even if only for a few hits. Not everyone in a party needs to be front and center for every moment, but a good DM should at least make everyone feel like they are there with a purpose, even if the significance ebbs and flows moment by moment.
@@cameronb851 yeah i get it. The main reason dor why it took so long is cause the DM used a really large map and didnt really consider the distance. Once initiative hit i was like 100-150 feet away from getting into a fight. Not to mention having no idea of the cultists had any ranged weaponry.
If a player cannot make it than they're not there. Why is that so difficult? Why do people pretend as if they're writing a movie epic and need a full explanation as to why someone all of a sudden isn't there? It's a game people. Oh look, Jim missed the session so his character is guarding camp while you guys go off. How difficult is that? And seriously, Ginny D? She gives the most basic advice that playing the game for a month or two will teach you. Nothing deep or world changing that will actually help your games. Now I prepare myself for the Ginny D simp attacks.

A treant is basically DnD’s “please don’t sue us, Tolkein estate” version of an ent; they’re big humanoidish trees that walk around
@@LordSvzklx I'm not very knowledgeable on Lord of the Rings, but thanks so much! That does help 🙂

We get it. You’re not like the other girls.
