...IDK, maybe I'm just too Baldur's Gate 3 dark urge pilled, but I think the whole cursed whip thing is actually a cool plot twist, I'd love to RP that.
We had a similar loot issue in my game last week, but with a better ending. Long story short after defeating a corrupted official we found a note on top of a chest, the note spoke of a grand conspiracy and the writer believing the chests contents would help said conspiracy. There was a large number of expensive jewels, but nothing else of any real value or aid. Even the DM was a bit upset by this, he'd been rolling from a table and I guess kept rolling low. One of the other players told him "you know you don't have to roll for it in a situation like this. It's not like it's random stuff from a dragons horde, it's more specific then that so you could actually just choose items you feel make more sense." The DM brightened at the idea, gave us 2 more items (the chests size wouldn't have been able to fit much more). Later he kinda made up for it by having us meet up with a retired adventurer connected to the barbarians backstory who sold us magic gear at a discount. The jewels from the chest covering it with plenty left over.
God, that last story just reminds me that having a player that doesn't pay attention or does something else (when they should be focusing on the campaign) isn't uncommon for me to deal with. Literally one of my groups right now has a player like that, and I'm not one to bring it up. I don't know if I can trust DMs to keep me anonymous. I hate being confronted for speaking out. I'm of the belief if you play tabletop RPG, you must put all your attention into it. If you can't, you're not invested and *you're not cool.* You're just wasting everyone's time. Period.
I wonder if the DM from the intro story was running the Fool's Gold module. The vague description seems to match it kind of, though I don't know if it throws you into foreclaimer ruins as early as 6th level since I haven't actually read much of the module itself yet.
I was in a combat that lasted 3 sessions before. But it was designed with several stages (there was an ongoing siege). The sessions were about 4 hours.
I was in a game where the dm tended to design long fights. One boss envounter was against a beholder that was supercharged by a macguffin. The fighter lasted about 10 hours over 3 sessions. It was tortuous by the end. One of the things it could do was summon more minions. By the time we killed it, we'd killed something like 40 minions.
That intro reinforced my opinion to at level 7, I give my players at least one magic weapon. The weapon could not fit the player style of combat or is a spellcaster with a +1 stick, but they have an alternative against normal damage resistente/imune enemies.
9:21- My solution to this while brewing up my home is to write a note on the loot list. "+1 weapon to character that's been missing the side of the barn with their sword," or something to that effect.
As annoying as that sounds, having a +10’ moose appear in any situation sounds kinda hilarious. Like one of natures most stand-off ish creatures just pops up in a fantasy 711 is comedy gold
Resistance to non magical attacks is like the worst designed trait a monster can have. Like oh boy, i love invalidating the martials only gameplay purpouse, while simultaniously being completely invalidated, as soon as you get a magic item.
In our Elder scrolls dnd game, we wandered into a demi-plane within a dungeon created by the dungeons mage overlord, and a gate of oblivion opened up with a small-ish invading force of daedra (if you call a daedric seige crawler and a daedric Valkynaz with around 100 soldiers and churls small) One of our guys got the favor of a daedric titan who is picking off the smaller guys. The group was separated before the attack, but reunited during it. Two of us are protecting the town thats in the demi-plane from its walls, while myself and three others are facing off against the Valkynaz.
My GM insists on all characters having a reason to work with the party as part of their back story. The closest we ever came to the lone wolf archetype was a dampyr who tried to distance himself from others out of fear of them getting hurt, underneath he was secretly obsessive about protecting his chosen family but he would never admit this to anyone. He also had a cute habit of giving the other characters nicknames, which he would pretend was supposed to be an insult but no one believed him. Always remember, TTRPGs are a group activity. If you aren't willing to play well with others you should go play a solo computer game.
"The only person to bypass damage resistance is monk with ki empowered strikes" Wait this is a 6th level party and the DM didn't give the rogue, ranger, paladin any magical weapons? Not even a moonlight sword or even a fucking +1. Insanity The reason is that basically the enemies got double HP. It isn't balanced around spellcasters its also balanced on giving your players magic weapons past 5th level the second they do they should get a +1 weapon.
@@KnightsRealm98 at six level only 4 1st level and 2 second level. Plus hopefully they were in a open field if they are the paladin should've had his steed out. The best case is using magic weapon spell but that is 2nd level and concentration so if the paladin loss the conc then fuck them right
Not all campaigns feature heavy use of magic weapons and that’s fine but if you know they’re going to be running into resistance enemies, you should probably consider giving them the opportunity to properly prep for it. In a stay campaign of mine, the party usually has 1-2 magic items each by the time they’re level 5
@@Xylarxcode "Not all campaigns" This only works when it comes to homebrew works. If its a module then the module will be judged as a product. We had the exact opposite as the opening story. 6 players, 5 magic users: a wizard, warlock, cleric, druid and sorcerer and 1 fighter. An anti-magic shield and the fighter charmed on the first turn and rolling terrible on all his saves, made the fight nearly impossible.
The last game for the 3.5 game. We were in an anti magic zone fighting zombies with 200 hp. Most of our group is magic base well magic weapons no effect . We had low hp so we all ran. The dm was shocked that we gtfo. Turns out his friend that never showed up had an overpower character and was meant to help us clear this fight. We dropped for other reasons but yah that was a bs fight
Now I have had a session a ran go for over five hours of only combat, but most of that time was in a larger scale battle against an Ancient Green Dracolich in its Lair. The Dracolich had many minions ranging from Undead, Evil Druids, Living Trees and even some Fiends. But in the end my players had enjoy the session overall as I was able to keep the combat engaging, and intense.

im not gonna lie when playing online i sometimes game BUT only cozy game that i can half pay attention too to keep my ADHD in check as dnd as most if not all my attention
I could see myself grinding/farming during DnD like I do when listening to streamed games. But only if I could easily stop or avoid focusing on it. It would have to be secondary to the tabletop game I'm playing with people.
I had a game I joined once where it took me an hour and half to be introduced. Honestly? I was fine. The dm was trying to herd the group to the correct place and the group also wanted to introduce me quickly, it was just hilarious to watch them stumble over each other so I was amused in that time. To be honest I also picked up way more information from my notes in that time and it made it easier to write up notes on each character so I have a good idea who is who later (online game so more difficult when you don’t have a person in front of you). It worked out and we still managed to hit all the plot points we intended to. My intro was still smooth and it didn’t take much to convince the party that I was joining them and it was believable that I was (I was asking about a missing npc my character was working with and the party was there to meet that person because one of them has them as their important backstory npc, and so, after a worrying sending, I had us take some beasts I had access to and we took off to look where I had a general clue the npc may have gone. All in all, was a good quick way and the short journey allowed us to discuss). Anyway, that was my experience with joining a game. Probably could have been a horror story but I was so amused that it was perfectly fine to me which I assured the group of because they were beating themselves up about it. I only think this bodes well for what we will all get up to.
So, Pathfinder 1e at a FLGS, about 10 years or so ago... there was a guy at the table named Virgil who was in his late 50s and while he wasn't playing games during the sessions, he was always sitting there with his laptop and watching Anime and Hentai! In a public game room! Would have been better if he had been playing video games, though I am loathe to imagine what he would have been playing... Sadly, that wasn't even the worst/most creepy of his behavior, but that is a tale for another day.
For the last story. Not only was this person clearly not invested in playing, no... They played a game nearby, which... isn't only rude, but it also affects the other players' game.
I was in one game where one player would sometimes walk his dog during the beginning of the game and was once *driving* and rolling his die in the passenger seat. I just don't understand why people choose to do things that are rude (and/or actually dangerous). He was rarely ready to play when it was game time.
World's Longest Combat: Okay, so the GM suggested a possible out using one of the party's better assets, which the players took, and then proceeded to plow through the obstacle anyway because, "Hur hur! They're using magic! Duh!" That is a supremely asshole move; it's clear that the GM just wanted to get rid of the smoke bomb and was going to make this battle happen no matter what.
I've been modifying the rewards in the modules I run because none of my players are a strength based martial class. All the +1 Longswords have to become Shortswords or Scimitars or Rapiers
There was a player in my group who turned out to be heavily toxic and may have significantly contributed to my worst case of burnout as a GM, but I was largely collateral damage in their involvement with my group, so I'll leave that story to someone else to tell. Plus said person interstalked one of us for years and I'd rather not start that up again.
There's nothing worse than a guy who gives lip-service to attendance, or occupies themselves with a book or surfing the net when it's not their turn. I've had a couple players in the past who were either consistently late, disrespecting the time of myself and other players, and those who just couldn't put away their phones and spent a great deal of time clowning around on my time. Look, I'm not some monster nor some control freak. But I do believe that when you commit to a D&D game, you are committing your time and attention to that game. To disregard that commitment by doing other things during a game, or being inconsiderate of others' time is nothing less than a total lack of respect for me and the other players. It brought me no joy, but I have had to tell a couple players, "I'm sorry, but you're out of the group. We're tired of waiting for you to show up before we can start and we're sick of having to recap what happened between your last turn and this one because you weren't paying attention. It's your farkin' JOB to pay attention!! So... Sorry, not sorry, this table is not for you. Please take your dice and go. Maybe you can find another table that is just there to hang out and isn't trying to tell a collaborative story. Anyway, you're not a good fit for us (me) and you're not welcome here any longer."
22:20 - Instant video pause to thumbs up and comment here about the fighter's "Whoa, this come out?" exclamation. It's funny, because occasionally it's embarrassingly true.
A magical sentient whip that has a hunger for emotions? Sounds like it’s based off of the actual Vampire Killer…as opposed to the Wish version that we got in the show (the Morning Star) and save for completely taking over a character to have them kill a bunch of innocent people. Pretty cool. We need more magic whips in 5e.
Whip in 5e had my interest for reach and finesse properties making me think of potential for Rogue and Monk. Unfortunately there were too many hoops to jump through that Crossbow expert could do better while clashing with monk's bonus unarmed strike.
Seriously? The guy who went out of his way to do as little as possible whines about not getting any chances to do anything? I would have unloaded on that jerk.
I'm guessing it has to do with OP caring a lot about that character or how a similar previous argument with the table over in-game actions blurred lines into being above game.
So... it's the next day and... yep, they're still in combat. I think they only have one more to go before they finish... oh wait, The healer used mass res. Yea, they're not finished yet. 😅
I feel bad when a Sudoku I start _before_ the game goes longer than I'm expecting so I'm only finishing it a couple of minutes before we're scheduled for starting the discord call rather than the 5-10 minutes I was aiming for, the thought of playing fucking Street Fighter during a game is mortifying.
Ive played ff14 during online dnd, but only during initiative when its gonna take a while for my turn to come back around, and nothing that would lock me into paying attention to the game for extended periods of time.
23:32 the only way I could think of to justify somebody spamming the same move over and over in combat would be a warlock, spamming, “eldritch blast” And even in that scenario, there’s still so much more that can be done with it. Truthfully, he should’ve been kicked the moment they realize that he was playing other games while playing D&D with them. Because that is just a huge amount of disrespect and disinterest.
@@BlueTressymI've definitely heard that kind of thing works for some players, and I can understand that. Though playing more attention heavy games like fighting games is going too far.
Not even I cast/use Ice Knife, just "Ice Knife" sounds like a Karen barking her order at starbucks "Hi! What would you like to order today--" "Latte!" "...What... size?" And instead of replying, the Karen just walks away, then complains about a lack of service later.
Sometimes I play little mindless phone games while it's not my turn in combat, or a long description is being made. It helps me focus on what's being said when I'm not focusing on staring at people the right way. I think my dm gets it, but I'm hoping I'm not being an asshole.
When you start your story with ‘horror stories happen to me a lot’ perhaps it’s time to consider just why that is. Sure, it could just be bad luck. Then again, it might not be. Something to think about at least
Problem is, it's not the game that people should be walking away from. Like a bad job, you don't leave the job, you leave the management. You don't leave the game, you leave the DM.
It's the ruined association that gets people to walk away altogether. Like if you go to a chain restaurant and the food is outrageously bad and the service is rock bottom, sure other chains may have the complete opposite but that first impression is gonna cause hesitation at best and pure disinterest at worst. First impressions aren't a be all end all for enjoyment or relationships but they sure are important.
I am guilty of playing games during one of the campaigns I'm in. Nothing too attention keeping though. This campaign I'm in has jist been such a slog though and I'll be dropping out from this group once tthe campaign is over in a couple weeks.
What do you do with a player who is much smarter than you and has a serious talent for BS’ing everything in their path? This guy could out smart a devil irl, he is funny, good at RP, the table loves him, and I do to. But he’s breaking my game, he’s 5 steps ahead of me at all times and I can’t beat him. I don’t know what to do with him, but I’m at the point where any time he starts to speak a chill goes up my spine because I know I’m going to be out smarted, yet again.
@ArcCaravan I mean, I can see why, but I'd personally call it a dm fumble. If anything encounter balance can be hard to get right if you just going by the books because there's a lot more that needs to be accounted for than just level and players

...IDK, maybe I'm just too Baldur's Gate 3 dark urge pilled, but I think the whole cursed whip thing is actually a cool plot twist, I'd love to RP that.
Period.
The Understanding Sake!
The monk in my campaign is a raging alcoholic, I will give him The Understanding Sake as a reward next time :D
I did a 12 hour combat, once. 3 sessions of 4 hours each. after it was over, we made the DM swear he'd never do that to us again.
Member of the Void: We don't want him
I'm glad they finished their first combat encounter by the time I got here
I wonder if the DM from the intro story was running the Fool's Gold module.
I mean the real question is. Did you have fun because if so thats all that matters xd
@@felinemage8285 Oh yeah, it was great.
Story: Kuo-toa
Crispy: Uk'otoa
Me: KRAKATOA! 🌋
Wow my story was the first one. Wasn't expecting it to show up so fast :)
Can't wait to see how the combat encounter goes next time. Maybe we'll be able to catch the tail end of it.
9:21- My solution to this while brewing up my home is to write a note on the loot list. "+1 weapon to character that's been missing the side of the barn with their sword," or something to that effect.
The skits are so good in this.
Ahh that random ABK clip was a pleasant surprise!
In our Elder scrolls dnd game, we wandered into a demi-plane within a dungeon created by the dungeons mage overlord, and a gate of oblivion opened up with a small-ish invading force of daedra (if you call a daedric seige crawler and a daedric Valkynaz with around 100 soldiers and churls small)
One of our guys got the favor of a daedric titan who is picking off the smaller guys.
"The only person to bypass damage resistance is monk with ki empowered strikes"
Wait this is a 6th level party and the DM didn't give the rogue, ranger, paladin any magical weapons? Not even a moonlight sword or even a fucking +1. Insanity
The reason is that basically the enemies got double HP. It isn't balanced around spellcasters its also balanced on giving your players magic weapons past 5th level the second they do they should get a +1 weapon.
Also, Paladins are half-casters. So, was that player just not using any spells/smites?
And if the product throws bullshit like double hp enemies past the point where the characters should have it. This isn't "creativity" its gimping martial characters and you know this. Cause the problem doesn't exist for casters. If its a low fantasy module it would be said in the post. It wasn't. Nor the module in question which means its a Wizard's module and well....that just means its shit.
@@KnicKnac I did say best case, bless isn't good in this situation cause it doesn't matter if you can hit them its the matter of damage. Shield of faith is good if you want defense but then again that wasn't the issue either.
BG3 thumbnail with a dark urge whip? Oh boy!
You may have a problem if your mind went immediately to rice wine in that context. 😅
NGL I absolutely loved Ultimate Angler back in the day when the 3DS was still in production and I could get StreetPass tags consistently during high school, but then my 3DS ended up formatting itself and I'm forced to start from scratch. Still fun though.
okay, that skit at the end got a good laugh out of me
Lol, the skits in this are amazing! Also really loving the credits for the artists you've worked with, that's really neat!
Thanks for the laughs and lessons, Crispy!
Stardust meets Castlevania sounds baller tbh.
im not gonna lie when playing online i sometimes game BUT only cozy game that i can half pay attention too to keep my ADHD in check as dnd as most if not all my attention
I've always been bad at recognizing opportunities.
World's Longest Combat: Okay, so the GM suggested a possible out using one of the party's better assets, which the players took, and then proceeded to plow through the obstacle anyway because, "Hur hur! They're using magic! Duh!" That is a supremely asshole move; it's clear that the GM just wanted to get rid of the smoke bomb and was going to make this battle happen no matter what.
your skids are becoming pretty good
I've been modifying the rewards in the modules I run because none of my players are a strength based martial class.
That jape with the vial of smoke was BS, he knew it wouldn't work and still suggested it.
Hi, the DM for the Package Deal party!
If anyone has any questions. I'd be cool to answer them.
22:20 - Instant video pause to thumbs up and comment here about the fighter's "Whoa, this come out?" exclamation. It's funny, because occasionally it's embarrassingly true.
In a whispering voice: "uk'otoaaaaaa"
A magical sentient whip that has a hunger for emotions? Sounds like it’s based off of the actual Vampire Killer…as opposed to the Wish version that we got in the show (the Morning Star) and save for completely taking over a character to have them kill a bunch of innocent people. Pretty cool. We need more magic whips in 5e.
Whip in 5e had my interest for reach and finesse properties making me think of potential for Rogue and Monk. Unfortunately there were too many hoops to jump through that Crossbow expert could do better while clashing with monk's bonus unarmed strike.
@@ArcCaravan Yeah unfortunately, Kensei kind of helps with it, but not by much. My monk has a whip, more as a side weapon. Same with his quarterstaff.
@@DANTVSVERGIL I've considered kensei, but reach gets dragged down by needing to be close enough for bonus unarmed strike.
@@RedSunUnderParadise And tabletop games in general.
Seriously? The guy who went out of his way to do as little as possible whines about not getting any chances to do anything?
I would have unloaded on that jerk.
My first pathfinder experience was so boring that I never went back to that game... I like have an adversion to it now.
In story 2 the author is confusing in character leaving with having to leave the party as a player I feel
I don't think I'll ever appreciate "HAHA SO RANDOM!" characters. 🙄 Also:

Ive played ff14 during online dnd, but only during initiative when its gonna take a while for my turn to come back around, and nothing that would lock me into paying attention to the game for extended periods of time.
"What time is it, is the combat over?"
"Your children are dead, and World War 5 just began last Wednesday!"
Bold move inviting people to insult your coolness

Keep that up as a running gag
These skits are great.
23:32 the only way I could think of to justify somebody spamming the same move over and over in combat would be a warlock, spamming, “eldritch blast”
And even in that scenario, there’s still so much more that can be done with it.
Truthfully, he should’ve been kicked the moment they realize that he was playing other games while playing D&D with them.
Because that is just a huge amount of disrespect and disinterest.
@@BlueTressymI've definitely heard that kind of thing works for some players, and I can understand that. Though playing more attention heavy games like fighting games is going too far.

sounds like a Karen barking her order at starbucks
"Hi! What would you like to order today--"
"Latte!"
"...What... size?"
And instead of replying, the Karen just walks away, then complains about a lack of service later.
Sometimes I play little mindless phone games while it's not my turn in combat, or a long description is being made. It helps me focus on what's being said when I'm not focusing on staring at people the right way. I think my dm gets it, but I'm hoping I'm not being an asshole.
Rip package deal situations
Omg I laughed so hard at the fighter skit!
When you start your story with ‘horror stories happen to me a lot’ perhaps it’s time to consider just why that is. Sure, it could just be bad luck. Then again, it might not be. Something to think about at least
"People who equate being hated to being funny are the biggest losers on the planet."
Hear hear, you beautiful rat!
MEMES! The group I play with (as a character, not as DM) has a separate discord channel to share memes in case anyone wants to mute it.
For real though I have been trying to come up with a throwaway joke PC who doesn't understand what class they are...
"You're not cool."
3 hour combat session?…so every combat session in 4th edition then.
I am guilty of playing games during one of the campaigns I'm in. Nothing too attention keeping though. This campaign I'm in has jist been such a slog though and I'll be dropping out from this group once tthe campaign is over in a couple weeks.
I made it to the end, "you're not cool." 😗
What do you do with a player who is much smarter than you and has a serious talent for BS’ing everything in their path? This guy could out smart a devil irl, he is funny, good at RP, the table loves him, and I do to. But he’s breaking my game, he’s 5 steps ahead of me at all times and I can’t beat him. I don’t know what to do with him, but I’m at the point where any time he starts to speak a chill goes up my spine because I know I’m going to be out smarted, yet again.

13:04 I had a small panic attack. My psions name is Djau. XD
The way I see it the fist one isn't a horror story just a mishap that can happen all in all it didn't end terribly
I'd still call it a tabletop horror story, just a very tame one that's more likely to happen than worse stories.
@ArcCaravan I mean, I can see why, but I'd personally call it a dm fumble. If anything encounter balance can be hard to get right if you just going by the books because there's a lot more that needs to be accounted for than just level and players
