One of the REALLY great American Sopranos. The only Soprano I know of to sing 2 leading roles at the MET on the SAME day, 1953 I think. Fiordiligi & Desdemona. What a gal !
Eleanor Steber's singing burned with an inner fire. One of the most important singers of the mid 20th century. Her versatility meant she could tackle so much repertoire. For me she was particularly great in the music of Mozart , Richard Strauss and Berlioz, however I wouldn't want to be without her live recordings of Puccini Madama Butterfly and La Fanciulla del West either or any of the lighter repertoire she graced. How fortunate we are to be able to hear this great , great singer!
Ms. Steber, who died in 1990, was born in 1914, just a year after her colleague, legendary mezzo Rise Stevens. Ms. Steber's versatility at handling operatic arias and musical-theatre numbers is in evidence here.
Ms. Steber sang "A Kiss In The Dark" beautifully, but Shirley Jones's recording is the definitive interpretation in my book. However, Ms. Steber gives Ms. Jones a run for the money.
That first entrance of hers is a little weird for the face close up, but wow in terms of producing a live shot? And making that type of high piano sound on q like that? That's a singer

She was such a generous singer. She sang as if her life depended on giving her all. Who sings like this today?
Steber truly loved to sing!
In the late forties I crouched in my bed and homebrew radio to listen to the voice of Firestone.

У неё был чрезвычайно мощный и красивый голос - великолепная была певица - одна из нескольких лучших за всю звукозаписываемую историю оперы!

Spetacular Voice!

Such a glorious singer! Pace pace is especially spectacular
She was fantastic and in those days singers were required to sing lighter repertoire and then launch into such high operatic standards.

When singers knew how to sing.
