Whats your focal range preference? Wide? Telephoto? How come?
Peter McKinnon 18-35mm & 70-200mm
Peter McKinnon Wide
Peter McKinnon I like wide because of all the beautiful things you can capture in one shot
35mm is love, 35mm is life
as a GH4 user, i love my Panasonic 14mm 2.5, is my favorite lens now.
Who would use an 11mm wide angle lens as an everyday portrait lens??? It is designed for architecture and landscape isn't it?!?! It's like using a bulldozer to put sugar in your coffee cup!
Sometimes you just need a lil sugar
@@chuck2703 "Lee, I'm not satisfied till the spoon stands straight up." -Clarence Worley
I love this comment 😂😂😂😂
@@chuck2703 or a bulldozers worth of sugar
It is designed for whoever needs it. As a sports photographer, I use superwides frequently and so do many others. It is often lackluster for landscape photographers because they don't know how to use it.
I'm always so pumped to go out and shoot some photos after I watch your videos!
*Main problem: I watch your videos right before I go to sleep :D*
MUTSCHGI ikr, same here
same
ditto lol
Same lol
Same except I’m still waiting for my camera to arrive in my mail 😂
That lens is worth more than all of my film and photography gear combined I think 😂
crazy warping indeed ! can't wait to hear about the project!
😂
Same here, I don't have any actual gear (I broke my smartphone too) so $0, if you wanna count my computer $700. But thats it.
Sven Vee I shoot with smartphone but the lens is not worth it
Sven Vee same.
"I've been waiting for ages!" - Clouds barely moved while "waiting" :P
Welcome to the world of story telling.
No such thing as too wide :D
I don't know anybody who uses a super-wide angle to shoot portraits. Why would you?
@@jonothandoeser It's all about style.
Peter, love your videos! I've used this lens on numerous occasions, however don't own one (I bought a 500 F4 instead haha!)
Anyway, what you're talking about is perspective distortion which is different to lens distortion. This lens is *almost* perfect when it comes to distortions. The hugely wide nature of this lens is immensely convenient for architectural and landscape work. As you say, it's not a lens for you and fits your shooting style. In fact, this lens would be AWESOME for photojournalism where you literally cannot go *too* wide.
While I was at a CanonUK meet up I used this lens to shoot some photos of a train carriage and all the lines are perfectly straight - it amazed me. However, like you say, this lens is INSANELY wide. Even if you're used to the ultra wides on full frame, 11mm is seriously wide. The price tag and why people are amazed as it's fisheye wide without the distortion.
Also, not to forget this completes the 'trinity' of lenses of 11-24, 24-70, 70-200. It allows you to get complete coverage. Think of those shooting high profile events such as the olympics for big sweeping crowd shots. This lens is sheer perfect for that. Again, like you say, lenses are down to your needs :) I want to love and buy the 85 1.2, but it just doesn't work for me and how I shoot :)
+Ben Brotherton Beautiful response! Thank you for your comment!
You're welcome my man! :)
The quality of you content is insane! Just watching and learning hoping one day I´ll be close to as good as you are Peter. Can´t wait to hear about the project, sheers!
Daniel Kertes 👍🏻
I've checked out other reviews of the 11-24 and have tentatively come to a few conclusions:
* This might be one of those cases where a lens that performs well for still photography isn't practical for video/cine except where the expected distortion it imposes can be used for effect. So for vid shooters it's likely a $3k occasional lens, which is a big ask. Otherwise, one can easily imagine it would take little motion indeed, of either cam or subject, before distortion overwhelms a shot. In still photography, we need but the one frame so are far less sensitive to the distortion once suitably aligned.
* While many of us don't often think portraiture & ultra-wide in the same thought, the 11-24 might be useful in certain documentary style images. The Q there is: does the lower focal-length range bring enough to the party compared to, say, the 16-35 or a good prime to justify the price tag? In other words, how wide do we need before we're pursuing numbers over images?
To my eye, this is a lens to rent not buy, and even then, only after a good amount of shoot planning so I know exactly what I'm going to do with it.
Thanks for the excellent introduction to it!
Cove Arts wow amazing comment
Cove Arts you actually stopped me from buying it now .... that usually doesn't happen
Peter McKinnon more like Peter McCanon 😂😂😂
Why would ANYONE be shooting a portrait with a wide angle??!!
I'm kinda disappointed your only input on this lens for this video was its not good for portraits. I mean like no shit its an 11-24 I feel like you know that and most of your viewers know that. For someone that has so much to offer in terms of experience with a variety of gear I figured you'd have more to say. But I mean content was well made as always and Im still stoked for your next video!
+Liam Waghorn I'm showing how it distorts if you use it for something it's not meant for IE, portraits. Clearly a landscape lens. Mind you, I do a lot of wide angle portraits because hey, I can do whatever the hell i want lol.
True, I think I was salty earlier because you were talking about how you were going test the new glass to see if it was worth bringing on your trip. So I'm thinking "oh shit cool I wonder what Peter looks for in a wide angle lens, what's his vetting process". Where you have so much more experience with gear your thought process behind determining whether a certain piece of glass is worth investing in would be much different than most peoples. Then it concluded with wide angle sucks for portraits if you're not careful which was the original purpose of the video. But I mean I'm just stoked you read my comment. Cheers,
8:22 he says it's not an in depth review
@@liammwaghorn your comments were along the exact same thought process I had when I was watching the disadvantages of an 11mm lens for portrait application. I was like..."Duh"...not to even mention the depth of field component.
I think even we know wide angle lenses are NOT for portrait, but at that distortion level at 11mm, it's NOT even for normal landscape man. You must have some projets that are so specific which require you to invest in this glass. You could argue that the 16mm-24mm would be pretty normal and can suit most people's wide angle need. But at that point, why buy this glass instead of 16-35?
i love the lens because i spent all my money on it....
Me too. But I have absolutely no regrets. It's been my go to lens for real estate
This made my day.
Hahaha best comment
I felt that
@@DanAuto I just picked up a Canon L-line 16-35mm lense for real estate. I would love to try this lense. You're lucky :)
I mean... "wide" is a stretchable term...

What's it like filming in 4K? given the crop factor this lens must make it pretty usable, or am I way wrong?
I have owned this lens for a few months now. Shooting Architecture I am blown away by its capabilities. If I was given it to shoot portraits I’m guessing I would hate it too. Use it for what it is intended and you won’t be left wanting. I give this lens 5 stars.
I actually really like the first photo of Matt but I can see how easy it is to get a very funhouse mirror photo.
I don't get it. Wide angle lenses are not made for portraiture! Some even consider a 35mm too wide for portraits.
didn't get my answer How wide it too wide?

@@ElectroMonkE did you clap inside?
6:57 Pretty cool you got Jacksfilms in your video
Will Jensen LMFAAAOOO😂😂😂😂

Will Jensen No jacksfilms is bigger
You are a terrible human being 😂
The distortion is normal for any super wide or fisheye lens. In After Effects (and I'm sure there's an equivalent in Photoshop), there is a filter called "Lens Distortion Correction" or something like that. It allows one to take out that strange barrel distortion. What one is left with is a crazy depth of field that one can't get with a simple wide angle lens.
one agrees with you. I reckon ones frame would be cropped heavily when one applies lens correction to ones photo. one.
@Matt Dreckow LMAO hahaha
@@mdreckow the meme dude
8:42 is why I love wide angle. Standing on top of a rooftop looking down on the streets looks dope.
0:32 love how the shoulder movement and the box slide match the song
Having a very wide lens helps a lot in Thailand, aside from the landscapes, so many temples have a wad of electric wires by the street and temple courtyards are often short, additionally, temples are wide and tall.
I'm more than happy with my "CHEAP" Canon 10-18mm 4.5 for video. There is some warping, but not as crazy as this lens
At 10mm you should get more warping. Unless you’re using a cropped sensor, then, if you’re using Canon ( crop factor of 1.6 ) that means you’re not shooting 10mm - 18mm you’re shooting 16mm - 28.8mm
Ĺl
I used this lens for a real estate shoot I did. And I totally agree, the warp on this bad boy can be hard to avoid at times, you gotta pay close attention every time you move the camera to make sure you're not warping things on the edges. But having said that...this is the greatest lens in the game for taking shots in/of small rooms. Although outside of real estate photography, I'm not sure why anyone would spend that kind of money on this specific lens. Tooooo rich for my blood
I finally got this lens, and I'm loving it. It's not for portraits, but amazing for architecture.
Great, great....GREAT video! Awesome music at the beginning, great b-roll and some useful information about 11-24mm! Thanks for this one! and...AND see you in the next one! :D
Dude! I friggin love your videos. I hope to be able to make stuff half as good as you! Keep it up! 👍
Philip Reber right? checking your stuff out now#
Rocky Mountain High thanks man
Why would you use the wide angle for portrait? I've never been a huge fan of wide, but really need to start shooting wide a bit more. Have a Tokina 11-16mm in the cupboard I need to dust off..
Reubs send it me. I still need a wideangle lens ;).
Reubs Have you tried astro with it, how good is it. How good is it with flairs? I'm planning to buy it😀
i wanted to buy a Tonika lens, but I've only recently heard about them. Are they good? I was thinking about getting a 12-28mm f4, but I don't if this is the best choice. Oh, my camera is a nikon d3300
Thoughts about Tokina 11-16mm?
Pretty good if you have a apc-s size sensor but if more of low light. 14-20 f/2.0
Ooooh! the way it WIDE
Like your profile pic!
Love your music selection Peter! Not just a photographer or cinematographer, but a musician as well!
My man, your content is god like. I love your energy and enthusiasm and if I could have even a fraction of that people around me would think I'd been on funny pills. Watching your videos just makes me need to get out there and do more. It's incredible, thank you my dude.

Great video! That lens it's incredible :D
1:40 The clouds didn't sell the trick :/ (it wasn't much time)
And that’s how you tel a story. Wouldn’t be the same effect if he just showed one shot of him waiting for two seconds. All about creating the illusion 👍🏼 Whether or not it sells the audience.
Why would you even think about shooting portraits with a 11-24?! That's what 50/85/105/70-200 are for.. This is what you should use for landscapes and stuff.. Anyway
Yeah, this is it exactly. You can have a lot of fun shooting people with this lens, and animals are great with it, but that's not really what it's designed for. It's landscapes and when you need to make a small room open out a bit.
ShamimM Exactly what I though. It's like reviewing a telephoto for architecture. Of course it won't work.
ian9outof10 thank you.. agree with everything you said
Daniel Ax thank you.. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so
I was getting worried no one was mentioning this in the comments, you saved the day.
I love this lens very much because I sold my grandpa's kidneys after he died, so it's close to my heart
Why did you wait until he died?
That is some crazy wrapping. The shot's without apparent wrapping look amazing.
I don't know why I feel so inspiring while watching your video! Love it man!
recently bought a Canon 24mm Prime Lens which is somewhat wide angle and i absolutely love it! F2.4 so its superb in low light too!
Tamron 15-30 2.8, as of now, the only wide angle you'll need. 10-15mm on a crop sensor is a bit better off then on full frame.
Considering 10-15 on a crop sensor is the equivalent of a 15-24 on a full frame, that's reasonable.
Tamron 15-30 2.8 G2 is best lens among these.

I have the Tokina 11-16 and it is great for landscapes. You can make some cool and creative car photography shots as well with a wide angle.
Just came across this video by accident... Matti with long legs made me smile... :) and yes I agree.. this lens is not for me either. … I clearly see your point.
I make my videos using my smartphone.
Inspired to try the little wide lens for camera!
Mr IY i used to make some Clips too using only my smartphone.. but then i got an dslr.
Jah Gringo So how has your experience been since then?
Mr IY absolutely great! It's so much more customisable than a phone, you can choose different lenses depending on your needs, you can Change every single setting (phones mostly let you change ISO and thats it). In general a DSLR is much more convenient for Videos and you can get a decent one plus a decent lens for the price of a modern Smartphone. Im actually more of a photo than a Video guy but when im filming stuff i always would choose a DSLR over a phone!
Congrats on the baby again bro!!!
Your camera room is probably worth more than my whole condo 😂
Your lens and camera collection is goals
I have a 14-24mm f2.8. The wide-angle lens has a different purpose and not portraits. This lens works well for landscape and architecture. Also, you get a square holder which you can mount somewhere midway. Btw, Amazing videos. :)

So,.. as far as super-wide shots, I like the feel of making where I am feel bigger... and having some of my video, in vlogs specifically, be focus be on what's around me vs. just me being a talking head... ya kno?
If I want that feel, like if I'm in a city or a small room I usually just use the GoPro superview... it does the trick, and is obviously cheaper than this monsterr of a lens.
I was editing my vlog, then I got a notification from RUclips about McKinnon.. priorities!

This lens is so dope for taking shots of Architecture. For example churches come out pretty sweet when you're able to get a whole large building in the frame from across the street.

It's actually incredible, for most cases you don't want that trippy look, but it can be extremely powerful for shots that you want to film for example a pov of a drunk person, or a special looking photo or a shot like Alt-J clip style
+HowToEvery oh I don't doubt it's an incredible lens. Just not for me. I'll keep playing with it though!
it's too wide when you don't touch the sides
Hey Peter, im pretty sure you have heard of MrBenBrown and his *Awesome* Visual Vibes.
The fact, that your shots for the vlog alone look so damn dope, got me the idea, that you should definitely do a similar thing ben does.

Tht beat box was so cool .. u r so talented !!!!😍😍 magic , photography , cinematography (obviously) beatboxing and many more tht i m not aware of !!❤️❤️
I absolutely love this lens, sadly I only get to use it when I borrow it from Canon because I haven't yet been able to justify the close to $4k price tag it has here in Australia. Why do I love it, simply the ability to produce images that have an epic feeling of space. I shoot Motorsport mostly and being able to get up super close in pitlane yet still have a whole bike in the image, or shooting a Supercross start almost on the back wheel of the bikes yet still have the whole start line in the image is just amazing. I can't attach images to give examples but it is just a gorgeous lens.
Who knew an 11-24 wasn't the ideal portrait lens?
Great info thanks.
Note to Canon, pick you tubers who appreciate the chance to try expensive lenses for free
You're just jealous. He appreciated it, its just the lens doesn't works for what he needs
I think they're pretty happy with Peter and his millions of subscribers.
Never used that lens. However, I own a sigma 10-20mm f3.5 and it's a really good wide angle for the money. It is an EF-S so yeah no full frame but I still love it
On the APS-C sensor its a 16-32
I've got that one too
Hmm actually I would prefer these distorted legs and face on photos. They are funny.
Dude your shots are nice but what's happening is so basic UNTIL I turn up the music. SO GOOD AND EPIC haha love it!
Thank you so much for continuing to make such great content Peter! Can't wait to see all the other goodies you got coming down the pipe!
As for lenses, I like fixies, and a good ol wide angle, for getting that grandeur perspective! Keep up the AMAZING work!!!
Alright so I am asking then: How narrow is too narrow???
I love the image of this lens, but I can literally buy a car for the price that it costs here in Brazil.
gotta comment and like this before I watch who's doing the same?
Hey Peter, I use a Canon 14mm 2.8 L II USM to shoot hotel rooms. With relative minimal distortion, it makes them look so much bigger. Yes, you have to pay attention to tilt and find the right angle. Landscape photography is another good use. I hope you still use it. It's a bit like a toy, you have to play with it. And like a toy, you get tired of it, you don't touch it for a while... and one day, yes one day, you play with it again and have so much fun.
I've been an event shooter for a long time, and for a long time the widest I could go was 17mm. It was time for an upgrade, but what lens to buy? It was up to the Canon 11-24 or the Sigma 12-24 Art Series, after days of painstaking research and watching countless reviews I ended up going with the Sigma, even though its not as wide as the Canon, its still ultra wide. My main reasoning was that it has less chromatic aberration, is sharper, has better color representation, and minimal distortion. Oh and its also $1000 dollars cheaper. I highly recommend the Sigma Art series!
hey peter! When I upload my pics in instagram (all taken with my dslr) they loose a lotta quality and I just edit them on photoshop, i think it may be cause they are too large an insta compress them but i dont know, any tip? thanks mate, love your vids
