I have been teasing this series for a very long time...ever since I did the Sega Arcade Racing Retrospective last year...and that's because it took a VERY LONG TIME to make...a thirty episode retrospective on every Sega Model 1, Sega Model 2 and Sega Model 3 arcade game ever made that isnt a racing title! Because Sega is the undisputed (in my opinion) king of retro gaming in arcades whether it be 2D or 3D!
Just don't expect Daytona USA, Scud Race or Sega Rally...as that already happened back in 2023! Check the playlists!
But the Sega Model series of arcade boards are filled to the bring with some of the best Sega games of all time...as well as some Sega Hidden Gems!
Patreon Thanks: Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, Jon Anderson, RayceARoni, Kurangui, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barabob, Steve Randall, Ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane,
tobemorecrazy, Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holder Schmidt, Tim Lehner, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj, Dorfus the Maple Syrup Man, John Booty and Craig M!
Up next: Pilot Kids. Its a horizontal cute em up shmup from Psiyko who also made Zero Gunner on the Sega Model 2 arcade board as well! Its definitely a lesser known shmup but its also an arcade hidden gem and a shmup hidden gem all rolled up into one! It has some Deathsmiles vibes long before Deathsmiles would ever exist and also feels like Toy Story the video game...unofficially!
and the best part is you can use the "Model 2 Emulator" to play the arcade original if you don't have an original arcade PCB!

I love how Psiyko makes you feel so bad in many of their games for choosing easier difficulties! They'll be like "Normal", "Child", "Monkey"! 🐒
Should have been Hard, Normal, Easy, From Wisconsin
More like Hard, Normal, Easy, Vermont Cheese!
Nice comeback 🤣
🧀
I do remember this game nearby in the arcade in my village. What is incredible is that the game was available in the same year when the game came out. The bad thing the game didn't take long after being removed 1 week later. The reason...no one was playing that game. :(
I was the only one who was playing.
Now the fun fact:
- Even if the title screen says '1998', Pilot Kids was released in March 1999.
- An enemy character that appears on Stage 6 is a homage to Bruce Lee.
The Bruce Lee homage is a fun touch
The setting makes me think of Toy Commander more than anything:)
Very similar look
The Django that drags a coffin with a surprise...
Such a weird mix of enemies
This and Zero Gunner remind me of those days where both games made me think that Psikyo made their own 3D arcade hardware that had no way to emulate other than MAME until I found that fortunately, both games ran on a more familiar hardware (Model 2) that doesn't need MAME to be emulated, instead, there's a dedicated emulator that runs the games like a dream (Nebula M2), including Psikyo's Pre-NAOMI 3D games
It’s always fun seeing devs that weren’t Sega make games on Sega hardware
Cute em ups are the best
I need to play this
Enjoy it when you do
This game reminds me of Sol Divide and Zero Gunner since Psikyo made this game
Similar mechanics if not completely diff vibes
Great game ,reminds me of toy commander on dc
Now that you mention it I get it
Are Psikyo and VideoGameSystem connected? I've always wondered as the art style is identical.
Good question and not sure
I love the riffing on western media that Japanese games do so well.
It is a fun aspect
I think you’re on to something with Toy Story, that one boss is basically Pop Up Pirate by Tomy. Weird this wasn’t included in the recent Psikyo packs. I would’ve said too much effort to emulate polygons, but Zero Gunner 2 was included🤔Something to do with the “under licence by SEGA” on the title screen maybe?
No I doubt that affected it. At least that’s what I assume
FIRST!
I’d expect nothing less
So cool!
It’s a fun one for sure
If I can enjoy Toy Story as an adult, I can just as easily enjoy this. The use of graphics and colours shows a great attention to detail to really bring it to life. I find most shoot 'em ups of this genre to be rather boring because you simply sit there with your finger permanently on the fire button and move around aimlessly, such that I could likely beat a game with my eyes literally closed. This one has the feel of competition. One of the best looking games of this era that I have seen and it looks mechanically good too. Style and substance, with a variation that keeps things interesting.
It’s fun to have a shmup with a diff vibe
Sort of has Clockwork Knight vibes. Psikyo makes great shooters man
It does have that vibe
Psiyko really made some gems for sure VHE. Pilot Kids is one of them for sure. Great title it is. 8^)
Anthony..
A hidden classic
It has some Ordyne vibes for sure. I hope that Namco System 2 will become a FPGA reality one day. That board has a massive list of games
@BERNDSBG should be doable
