    I am currently working on a musical project. I am diving into my own evil traits and mental flaws. The goal is to eradicate any malice I am holding onto. This project is for me to grow into someone decent. This video helped me understand it so easily, even for me. Psychology revolution is what I am currently walking on.

The research you guys do have at least changed my life. From no skill "dum" to skilled learner. Thanks.

  • @slighter
    @slighter 2 года назад +1

    Yeah, but what EXACTLY is it? It relates to functions like learning, memory, decision making, and so on. But what part of those processes is the cognition? The top-down executive control? The conscious part? The interactive collaboration of neural networks (regardless of what mental state they form)?

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  2 года назад +1

      It's all of those things. Cognitive psychology is an umbrella term for an approach, it is not a thing in and of itself. Cognition is a cognitive process or act. So your question is therefore, what is a cognitive process, and you gave some examples of that at the beginning of your question.

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Damilare! There are loads of great places globally to learn cognitive psychology - i would suggest thinking about the following: do you want to work as a cognitive psychologist afterwards? If you do, check what accreditation is required in the country you want to work in, and make sure the course you apply to has that accreditation. In the UK the BPS have a list of accredited courses on their website. In America, the APA has similar.

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +4

      You're welcome :) in the UK, Cambridge is fantastic for social science - i can really recommend that course. Look at PBS for a psychology angle or HSPS for a more general social sciences approach. For straight psychology, Bangor university in Wales have an active department and LSE in London is involved in lots of interesting research. For me, the key differentiator between universities is how much you want to be taught by a teacher and how much you want to teach yourself. The research universities give you access to amazing researchers, the teaching universities give you access to amazing teachers. I found the research style more inspiring

    Is there a difference between nueropsychology and cognitive psychology

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +3

      Yes - anything with "neuro" in it is looking in some way at the structure and function of the nervous system. Cognitive psychology is a broader term and covers anything that a person can know (eg. Perception, Memory, critical thinking). There is an overlap between neuropsychology and cognitive psychology - it's called "cognitive neuroscience" and looks at the role of the nervous system in cognitive functions.

    do you have a suggestion on how to learn further into cognitive psychology without a degree ?

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +6

      You're welcome! Thanks for your message - I think the best way to learn more about cognitive psychology is to pick one topic at a time and then read/watch videos about that topic, because each topic is so large and varied that you can discover more by focusing your efforts rather than being too general. Interesting cognitive topics include: memory, language learning, perception, intelligence, cognitive behavioural therapy...

  • @travhammer

    So cognition is separate from reason. Or is it that, our ability to reason allows for conscious cognition?

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, cognition and reason are separate concepts. Cognition could be simplified to 'our ability to think' at a general level, whereas our ability to reason is more nuanced (it is a cognitive process, but more specific)

    • @PsychologyUnlocked

      That's a great suggestion - thank you! I will make a video on that :) in the meantime, I'd definitely recommend taking a look at Carol Dweck's work on mindset - her concept of the growth mindset tackles the challenge of getting over functional fixedness. • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +1

      Gosh! There are countless options! If you enjoy the data elements of psychology, then data analyst roles and social planning could be of interest. If you are interested in mental health and clinical psychology, then therapist roles and counseling are options. If you want to turn your psychology knowledge towards a business application, look up organisational psychology for starters. Psychologists are involved in many decisions, from designing buildings and cities, to lobbying and policy development, to school counseling and life coaching. Oh and then there's sports psychology if you want to help sports stars achieve more than they ever realised they could without you! The list goes on!

    How does this perspective explain who you are?

    • @PsychologyUnlocked
      @PsychologyUnlocked  3 года назад +4

      That's an interesting question... I might rephrase it a little as my answer: the cognitive approach attempts to explain HOW you are who you are. The how comes from the cognitive processes (like little computer processes running in your brain)... But the who also requires some external input... Nothing happens to a computer if you don't press buttons on the keyboard or move the mouse a bit... So cognitive psychology explains the process, but "life" explains how we all end up different (even with pretty much the same "equipment" inside our heads...

      It is best to separate these two concepts: (1) cognitive processes and (2) types of intelligence. Different types of intelligence demonstrate different cognitive functions.
