    August 15, 2012: On todayapos;s edition of The Morning Swim Show we?re looking back on one of the most memorable swimming races in Olympic history: the women?s 400 freestyle relay at the 1976 Olympics. We witnessed some history-making performances at the London Olympics, from Chad Le Clos? 200 butterfly victory to Katie Ledecky?s gutsy swim in the 800 freestyle. As great as many of the swims we saw in London were, very few could match the significance that went into the final of the women?s 400 freestyle relay in Montreal in 1976. Broken and defeated, the United States could have conceded the race to the East Germans, but that wasn?t the plan.

    I was there as the youngest of the Australian swim team and witnessed this relay in person.. Was so happy for the USA Team!.. Was a horrid Games for Shirley B frm USA winning 5 silvers behind the East Germans. I was thrilled to beat the EG in 2 events 2yrs later at the Worlds in West Germany in the 400& 800 free in WR time!😉

      So much pride and confidence, why didn't show up at Moscow 1980? Michelle Ford was there and won gold.

    The U.S. won on the turn during the third leg.

      snowpants2212 or Shirley's INCREDIBLE, perfect and still legally safe "flying relay start". The East German coaches were absolutely CONVINCED that Shirley jumped early and reportedly livid that their protest was turned down. Yes, VISUALLY speaking, I'd agree that excellent turn of Jill's - not taking a breath right off the wall like Pollack did, does give the appearance of that being moment the got the USA girls the lead.

      snowpants2212 Also, not to intentionally play devil's advocate, but if the East German doping system had been more perfected by 76 as far as how soon before a competition the oral turinabol would need to be stopped- which varies sometimes based on the individual, to prevent a positive doping result, Barbara Krause may not have been left off the team, and this relay MIGHT very sadly have had a different, difficult to handle result.

      That's true, but Wendy did a good job in swimming against the 100 free silver-medallist on her leg.

    Keith Jackson called swimming until the final weekend. He had to leave the swimming competition to call track and field and was replaced by Curt Gowdy.

    They should test all the frozen samples from the past! Testing is way more advanced now! There be a hell of a lot of gold medals handed back! Lol

      There is a feature length documentary called "The Last Gold" from 2016. Not sure the quality, but you might check that out.

    "Low voices and heavier physiques" - used to describe the East Germans, is an apt description for Americans such as Jill Sterkel, Angel Martino and Katie Ledicky.

    The false starts would have been disqualified.

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 3 года назад

      what false starts? you mean as in the lead off swimmers, correct? And NOT because of the great take off the blocks by Shirley that was SO good that the East German coaches were convinced she false started and protested but the exchange was obviously ruled legal.
