    Man, he had a beautiful stroke and he was absolutely FLYING. No jammers, no 15 meter underwater start breakout, no underwater kicks and he came home in 25.1, which is even competitive by today's standards. 41 years ago! With the modern technological advancements & techniques, he would probably be a good 2 seconds faster.
    Thank you for posting.

      Add there: VERY shallow (waist high!) water and no Finnish gutter. By today's standards this pool is truly horrible!

    Why did Mark Spitz say “Skinner did not even make the Olympics “? He was ineligible due to being from South Africa . That is different from “not making it “

    You can see them standing after the race. The pool could not have been more than 4 feet deep. I remember people saying that outside of this swim there were not many other lifetime bests at this meet. It was regarded as a slow pool making this swim even more remarkable. He had the record for five years.

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 5 лет назад +2

      terribly shallow and dangerous by any standards, and would not have been allowed to contest any more national level or international level meets at that pool. I think Kelly pool, if its even still in use in Fairmount Park, is ONLY for recreational purposes.

    I was a 12 year old kid when Rowdy Gaines broke this record back in 1981. I had snuck down onto the deck at the Texas Swim Center in Austin to watch a special time trial for world records shortly after the 1981 NCAA meet. They set the pool up long course meters. Gaines made two attempts at it. Barely missed on the first attempt. Then went and warmed down. Then came back and went 49.36 and beat it. I snuck behind the starting block to hear his interview while he was still in the water. He told a reporter “that record won’t last even a few more weeks” . It lasted until Matt Biondi broke it in 1985. Gaines was asked what he had been doing the past few days. He said “I have been watching Luke and Laura on ‘General Hospital’ “. I remember Kris Kirchner was Gaines’ “pace setter” for the first 50 meters. I remember William Paulus also set a World Record in the 100 meter fly at that same time trial (it lasted until Matt Gribble broke it in 1983). And I do believe Jill Sterkel set a world record in the 50 free, but back then the 50 free world record was called a “world best”, because it was not an Olympic event, so it could not be called a “world record”. I wish I could remember just how many days it was after the NCAAs that the time trial took place .

    Also, look how informal everything was - Jonty Skinner is from South Africa, and is wearing a USA swim cap. When have we ever seen anyone wearing a cap from a different country than they are from, when they set a WR? It is way too formal nowadays to ever see anything like that

    It would have been great to see Skinner and Montgomery go head-to-head in Montreal. I know that Skinner's time was more than half a second faster than Montgomery's gold medal time, but the games are a far different experience with more pressure than U.S. Long Course Nationals held after the Olympics. Love how his fellow competitors made their way over to Skinner's lane to congratulate him.

    Unfortunately, this was when all athletes from South Africa were barred from competing due to apartheid. Ironically, the 1976 boycott by the African nations was due to the IOC not kicking out New Zealand for allowing the South African rugby team to stage a tour there.

      It would have been amazing to watch Montgomery and Skinner fight it out in Montreal. Also sad is the case of Karen Muir of South Africa. She broke the world record in the 200m backstroke in 1965 at age 13, then broke and re-broke the world records in both the the 100 and 200 backstroke several times between 1966 and 1971. She might have been unstoppable in the 1968 and 1972 Olympics.

      @@chrisverby3047 that's why Zola Budd used her British ancestry to compete for Great Britain in 1984. Of course, South Africa finally rejoined the world sports community after they finally abolished apartheid in the early 90's.

    They say his split is 24.31, but on wikipedia, on the same day, they say he got the 50 fr record en route with a time of 23.86...

    • @hermixtonen
      @hermixtonen 3 года назад

      I was there personally . I was 12 . Rowdy , to the best of my memory, did not swim the 50 time trial that day . Kris Kirchner might have . Also , if wiki is saying it was a 50 “world record”, that is a mistake because, back then , the 50’s only counted as “world best” (not WR) because they were not Olympic events. Also, whatever the world best was, I am sure it was faster than 23.86 then
