I have the means to spend hundreds of dollars on brand name gear but instead I've been rocking mossy oak base layers from walmart and wool socks from costco @ $23 for six pairs for the last few seasons, they've worked great!
dang you can get 6 pairs of wool socks at costco for $23?? Those both sound like good solutions! This video is aimed at bringing awareness to this stuff for riders just starting out who might be running sweatpants and cotton socks. I also think its nice to support brands that invest back into snowboarding.
@@BoardArchive Those socks are thicker than traditional proper snow socks and they're not 100% blend wool, it's wool with some other synthetic stuff. Overall, they're still good though, I rock em' sometimes when I haven't washed my snow socks, they work great, but the thickness may hurt some people's feet if they require the thin socks.
Always so on point TJ
Been riding 25 years, prided myself on how thrifty I was yet still able and willing to get out there in almost any condition. This year, found myself upgrading gear, coincidentally getting all the stuff you listed here (except goggles, finally upgraded those last year and it made a huge difference), including new boots and proper socks to match. Also 3/4 length base layer bottom. Can already tell I’m going to be way more comfortable and since this year I’ll be working more and have less days available to ride, I want to make sure im not going to pussy out if it’s a little cold. Merino wool feels insanely comfortable on my skin. This is a real helpful list, wish I saw it 10 years ago. Thanks homie!
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on that Showstopper I saw a clip of! Picked one up from the Burton demo sale a couple months ago for crazy cheap and have heard great things about it ever since it released!
Great advises, please make more videos like that with variety of brands , that will help to navigate in this huge market for sure

the #1 resounding answer should be gloves. nothing ruins your day faster than a shitty, cold/wet pair of gloves.
Thats a fact, I should have included that on this list. I assumed that was something people would know not to overlook. I should never assume...
A properly waxed pair or kincos will do the job and last you a lifetime.
kincos with sno seal is a certified hack@@MS-ut8fd

Great tips. I'd add purchasing used higher-end clothing which will save you a ton off the original price. Also, save all tags from your equipment purchases so when you upgrade, you have the specs available if you want to sell your old stuff to offset the cost of your new purchase.
fact!
Your recomendations are so on point 👍
A couple of seasons ago I had to buy Googles and found some Smith Squad XL for about 70 euros here im Spain, with two lenses. Changing between lenses is a hustle but you have good optics to protect your eyes, at a decent price.
thank you! the squad xl is clutch for the price
For baselayer bottoms, I suggest 3/4 length. This means that it's only the socks going into the boot for a more comfortable fit. Patagonia Capilene, Smartwool, and Burton sell this style at the very least.
Great advice man, I've finally come away from a hoody mid layer to a fleece or down for the colder days. I wish I did that sooner. I'd also say knee pads and impact shorts are a must! I did my knee in so back my 2nd year that a never ride without knee pads and Burton impact shorts
I need to give impact shorts a try
I took a free-style class for a week and impact shorts and back protector were obligatory, next to a helmet ofcourse:)
I got a lot of my gear discounted on evo which is a huge way that I saved a ton when initially getting my stuff
Right patience and just waiting for those sales is worth it
Great advice for beginners. I’d add goretex gloves. My hands were always wet and cold when I first started. Lots of hand contact with the snow😂
That was a miss on this video, wish I'd mentioned it. I assumed that was something people would know not to overlook. I should never assume...
@@BoardArchive honestly I’ve seen people turn up in shorts and no gloves. I don’t think they lasted long. 🤔
hahah oh man thats not gonna fly on day 1, not even in spring
So true, my transition from cheap leather gloves to goretex glove was a game changer. My hands were literally frozen in the glove when I first started out cuz I didn't know what gloves/mit to get.
Gortex is hardly the best for waterproofing, but it can work
A very helpful video, I wish I'd seen in 12 years ago.... You, sir are a very intelligent and reapectful person and I really appreciate it.
thank you my friend, i'm glad you think the information here will be useful
Thanks man. Gonna pick up snowboarding for the first time at 42 years of age
Hello TJ ! Nice advices as always, i love your content 👍🏻😁. I have one crucial question for you : when will the riding hoodie will be back in stock ? The new white one is dope 😍!
Cheers from France
thank you! the hoodies should be back in stock towards the end of this month. I will update on IG and RUclips when they're available!
any good suggestions for snowboard jackets bettween 400-500 ?
as a snowboarder fan about 10 years, these items are really most important, quality of life related
Any chance you are doing a Gnu Banked Country review?
Can i use my skating helmet for snowboarding?
brand new: whatever touches you skins( except goggle), helmet, and boots
2nd hands: boards bindings , protection gears ( except helmet ) outfits. Goggles ( buy a goggle with good frames and foams, cuz u can always buy new lens)
White Board Archive hoodie is sick, any plan on releasing it ?
thank you! yes they should be available towards the end of this month
I just can’t seem to get into this hobby, I’m 25 now. Wanted to snowboard my whole life.
how can you skip Mittens! it was a game changer, keep your finger dry and warm is soooo important!
Bro, you guys gonna restock those sweet hoodies you have? Thanks!
Working on it! They should be available towards the end of the month
When does your snowboard hoodie come back in stock?
they should be available again towards the end of this month!
@@BoardArchive thank you!
The best gear investment would obviously be that white hoodie
hahaha yes thats a given
Make sure your goggles have a good field of view! My first cheaper pair of POC goggles were like looking through a tunnel.
Solid tip!
Absolutely. I’ve given up on women’s goggles. I can see everything now!
And bring your helmet to fit the goggles with the helmet on in the store. Some goggles are really high and when your helmet pushes on them it’s really annoying
Atom LT is a fuckin life changer to anybody skeptical on the price tag. 100% worth it
Amen
❤❤❤
For most sports equipment, it's best to go with the best quality stuff you can afford even if you're a beginner. Quality gear will last longer and make it easier to perform well. Bad equipment especially in a sport like snowboarding can ruin the experience.
In some cases yes, other cases you can upgrade I feel… boots for example, get the best pair for sure, there gonna last years and years and you get more comfort along the way, but I feel like a board/bindings isn’t worth getting some high-tech 800$ board for a beginner…
impact shorts and knee pads
love the video but i will say i disagree with the goggles a bit. 100% i tell everyone DO NOT buy 200$ goggles. ive tried everything from anons - amazon knockoffs and the amazons do everything for $25 in my case. no fog issues ever(i tell people the correct storage methods and never wipe inside etc.), and they work great. only downside is find with them is convenience features like magnetic lenses instead of clip ons that take a couple mins. otherwise these amazon ones have done wonders for $25
Butt pads! Some armored shorts make the days much more enjoyable.
I have Anon m4s goggles and they really aren't that good. They fog up all the time. I feel like I spent too much money for a low quality product. Should have gone with Oakley
Actually the helmet is most important, and NeVeR take the rental ones.
You forgot the helmet👍
Whoops, should’ve watched till the end before commenting. Great video!
You forgot the helmet
boots always and then pants…simple…all other will not make or break your beginning days….you can go inside and dry gloves but not a wet butt.
yes dont ride in jeans hahah
Bonus gear:
Two way radios with speaker mic, if you go with friends. Get some inexpensive good quality Baofeng UV-5R, or whatever two way radios, to talk to each other while riding, game changer, trust me.
🤔 okay okay.
BOOTS! The deck is the least important in your setup.
