Nothing against Lemmo. He's a great guitar player, but I like when Brandon presents guitars, because he goes into depth about the features, and talks about the history of how companies assembled these guitars. Kinda reminds me of Mark Agnesi hosting. Beautiful guitar!
Hell, I liked Mark Agnesi most of all. Always had a recognizable song instead of the 'muted jazz fumblings, of (fill in the blank) Recognizable as something you could compare your own playing against. Lemmo is good, occasionally opens up, but when stressed, returns to his Jazz routines from music school, which all sound too similar. A lot of us want to compare music we've heard, with the guitar being presented. Not some own original piece with which we've no experience. Just sayin' Love the Channel, Love everyone on it. Always subscribed. Cheers !
@@mcmdrpiffle447 part of the problem of playing something recognizable now vs when Agnesi worked here are copyright strikes. RUclips has really made it difficult for any cover of a tune to get traction and not have all the $$ go to someone else
If I say Lemmo just doesn’t care that much about the guitars, it’s not a slight. Lemmo obv. cares a lot about music and technique. He can do what he does with a Squire… All of us probably have a memory of the first time we heard Lemmo play…the way he does. He’s an extraordinary player, he just doesn’t care very much about the guitars. Mark was the opposite. There is reason to miss Mark.
I have absolutely loved meeting the different personalities/playing styles of all of Norm’s crew! Lemmo is the man but, I gotta say I prefer the change of pace. It’s been great to see the variety! Much love! (Love you too Jen!)
Welcome to our screens Graham. Hope to see you on future Guitar Of The Day shows. What an awesome guitar. Still new from 2004. Amazing! Thanks for the spec check too Brandon. Always very interesting. Some very sad news hit our screens this morning from the Dallas Air Show. Thoughts and prayers to the families and all involved.
Inspiring playing by Brandon, always funny, upbeat and relatable. The history of the instruments are what Norm’s is about and Brandon presents the story effortlessly like his playing. Enjoyed todays video so much that I picked up my old Gretsch and played right along towards the end! Thanks!
The S1 switch on the early 2000 models, usually puts the pickups together in series like a humbucker (in positions 1 & 5). Instead of in parallel like the standard 2 and 4 positions. Hence the volume and more mid “boost” sound.
I have the same Strat! Bought it almost-new with money from my 21st birthday. It was my first Strat, and I still have it. Haven’t played it in a while, but I think that’s about to change…
Brandon's presentation skills are top notch, they can't be beat, and it's always a pleasure to learn the detailed specs of the guitars he presents which might be overlooked by other presenters. And he has tarantula fingers (positive comment) maneuvering around the fretboard, with great playing. I hope Brandon continues to get to present whether Lemmo is back or not.
I have this exact same guitar, sans plastic coating on the pickguard, which I'm kicking myself for removing. I bought mine in 2004 and it came with a 50th-anniversary hardcover book (The Stratocaster Chronicles) which incorporated a cd featuring many famous Strat players inside the back cover. It also came with a 50th-anniversary commemorative guitar stool. I know these things haven't appreciated much since 2004 but I'm in no hurry to get rid of them. The tweed case still has all the candy, including a gorgeous strap and the 50-year embroidered badge, and is a thing of beauty. Edited to add: Insane improv skills Brandon. I can only dream of producing sounds like this. Excellent video.
I had one of these for awhile. The pickups were designed by Bill Lawrence and use samarium cobalt magnets. They put out a strong signal too. As you can hear they have their own sound, not particularly Stratty but maybe just the thing if you’re looking for the Strat look & feel but with fuller tones.
I love these guitars, I got mine new in 2004 and unlike many on here, i've used it as my main guitar all that time, so much so that I think it will need a re-fret soon, its been plecked once due to fret wear, but dont think there is enough meat left in them for another. I have a fair collection of guitars including Les Pauls, PRS 513, Telecasters and other Strats, but none of them play or sound as sweet as this baby
@@mattc.883 I like the stock pickups, and but we all hear things differently, maybe to your ears they will sound better. too many choices to make these days
My 2012 Deluxe is my favorite guitar I’ve ever owned. So much so that I bought it back from GC after having sellers remorse for $625 more than I sold it to them for. Tough lesson but still worth every penny. All strats are a little different and my 2012 is special.
Cool Strat Brandon, I love strats with a 2 tone burst!! ..another great #GuitaroftheDay thanks Brandon and Jen and Norm and new guy who kind of looks like James Franco's lesser known skinny little brother.
Ive got the same guitar which was just unboxed by me in 2019 for the first time. I inherited it from a great friend who passed. It is in the same exact condition as im generally afraid to even look at it. But holy jeeze opening that case is like angels singing. It almost emits it's own light ✨️
Nice job Brandon and Jen on video and editing. Very enjoyable video. The S1 switch sounds more like a compressor to me. The pick attack sound changes when you engage the switch.
Great playing, you guys! As for the Noiseless pickups, I have a 1998 American Deluxe Tele with them. ‘98 was also the one year that model was built with three pickups, Tele bridge and neck with a Strat pickup in the middle. My favorite setup! And the serial number for dating (post-‘77) is useful as far as that goes, but it’s not always consistent. I used to have a Strat Plus, bought new in 1987, the year the model came out-I bought the first one I saw-but it had an E4 serial number. Using up decals, I guess, as the Strat Plus wasn’t available in 1984.
While so much for it never being played before. If you had the money to buy that it would of been a cool one to have and put away til he took it out and played on it. But it is a sweet guitar. And love when you guys talk about the history and time lines. I miss Mark he gave a lot of history and details.
Very nice video! Brandon? Introduction was terrifically spot on as usual! I love the history! Playing on both was delightful. Graham? Nice licks, Great to see you two together again ! Only critique is that Graham is coming off as a bit mopey, like he needs a trigger room or something. This is Norm's Rare Guitars ! Open up, smile, talk, engage ! My $ 0.02, which means nothing.
ADS S1 switch details from Fender site: Position one: all three pickups wired in series Position two: bridge and middle pickups wired in series Position three: middle and neck pickups wired in series Position four: bridge and neck pickups wired out of phase, with a special tone capacitor Position five: bridge and middle pickups wired in series and out of phase, in parallel with neck pickup
Would the S1 options be the same on the 2006 model. I ask because I have the 2006 and the switch diagram that came with it shows a completely different layout than you described. I'd be glad to share that information if you want.
I'm not surprised. I recently bought a 2002 American standard hardtail that looks brand new and has the plastic on the pickguard. It happens sometimes. Someone buys it, puts in in the case in a closet or under the bed and forgets it's there...
My 2000 MY American Deluxe Stratocaster came with Vintage Noiseless Pickups. IMHO, the noiseless stacked Humbucker pickups sound nothing like a vintage single coil pickup. To each their own.😊
I do like a strat that doesn’t have an “ice pick” sound…my period correct comparison to my Dimarzio Vintage is that mine are a small bit brighter with a raising eq at the top end
I've got in my possession a Strat built with Brian May-inspired pickup and phase switching, plus Burns pickups similar to those in Brian's Red Special. I have had occasion to fantasize about swapping out the Burns pickups for something like these noiseless ones from Fender. I wonder if they would be hotter. Is it recommended?
Lemmo is a great player but it is nice to have someone do GOTD once in a while that actually knows about the guitars. Nothing against Lemmo but his knowledge of all things guitar is limited. He makes up for it with his playing. But you have done a really good job when you have taken over. So thanks and good job!
My favorite guitar I purchased in 2004. Still have 2 unopened in boxes. This guitar has one of the best smooth feeling necks. Anyone that plays mine, do not like putting it down. Addictive guitar.
I have the same guitar (also absolutely pure mint unplayed, stickers, tags, unopened case candy) and it's even more pure factory mint because my strap is still wrapped with the original string, and the case latches still have on the transparent green film put on at the factory. Couple of things. The p/ups are Bill Lawrence SCN (Somarium Cobalt noiseless) and the single ply parchment scratch-plate has a 50th Anniversary laser etched motif. The description of the S1 switching in this vid isn't accurate because, the S1 switching system mixes series and parallel switching with different pick-ups as well as engaging a special capacitor
Great video guys. I love how the maple frets give it a more twangy sound than the rosewood frets. Plus the stickers give the guitar its own splash of personality. Good stuff, keep up the great content.
Jazz chops and Country links. Pickups give a more clean living sound but guitars are all about what pallette you find for your expression. It's not going to be Voodoo Chile through a 67 superbass but so much music is still more than harmonious to the more fender than fender sound. Sharp defined punchy it is a blues/pop/jazzmachine stick the s1 on and the sound pokes forward in the mids more. Players previously often used a tube screamer in the same way a mid centred highlight, push forward. They worked best on amps on that break up of overdrive. Fender kind of made an equivalent for clean as well. Tube Screamers were the secret sauce for so many players fenders especially but gibsons and others benefited in a different sonic shaping.. 'SONG OF REASON' On my new album see channel (CHECK updated GUIDES) I almost forgot brilliant Brandon and Graham.regards to Norm.
I’m confused. I have a 50th anniversary strat and it was purchased for me in ‘95 plus or minus a year. Never mind. It’s the 50th anniversary of the company not the strat.
Umm are you sure about your info about what the S1 switch?? That switch isnt about boosting mids or just adding the middle pickup. A bit more research goes a long way , bud.
