Just before he died, he was guesting on "Will & Grace." My wife & I were in the audience and after one of the takes, he began a routine of tap for about 4 minutes. I saw him tapping live. One of the highlights of my life was watching him dance. When he was done, more than a couple of people in the audience were crying at this show, myself included. He died not long after.
Warren Boule: From fall of 1999 to 2005, I lived about 2 blocks away from a tap dance studio. Most of those summers, until he passed away, the studio had a workshop (or something) for its students (and anyone else who could cough up the fees) where Gregory Hines was the featured guest dancer/teacher. I rode the bus, so every afternoon I had hopes that, as I walked by that studio, I might catch a glimpse of him. (Never did, but oh well..)
My Mom told me a story of seeing him in a restaurant in NYC. She said hi to him and told him how much she enjoyed his dancing. He stood up from his table, talked to her for a bit and introduced her to his father. I always remember that when I see clips of him.

@@nonozebra4196 the camera work for all the dance scenes is amazing. Some guy, or gal, is dancing with that camera, partnering the onscreen dancers. He centers them and burnishes the fluidity of their dancing. Just amazing.
You know what's so cool about tap dancing? It's filled with so much free style and self creation, while keeping a tapping beat. Tap dance will always be in my top five! Great dancing!
I have probably watched this movie 50 times. Mostly for this dance sequence. The music, called "Tap" , is by David Foster. In any decade eighty's music is still excellent.
What a great talent that left us way too early and he was just fantastic alongside Billy Crystal in the movie running scared. If you haven’t seen it go get it right now hilarious !
I'm so overjoyed to watch White Nights again after purchasing a copy for my dvd collection and it's so nice to have this favorite part of the movie uploaded on YT. You'll never be forgotten Gregory Hines. ♥
When I was a kid ( Turned 70 today ) I loved to watch Hines, Hines and Dad tap on TV. Took tap as a kid but never got good. I loved to watch Gregory dance. I was shocked when he passed. 💔 He was so great !!! ❤
Tap dancers are truly athletes and this man is one of the best, died way too young won't be another Gregory for a long time. Was lucky enough to see him live, what a show. SJ Sending my love and prayers always for family and friends and all.
He was a singularity. Imitated but never duplicated. His tap dancing brought you in to him. The beat the moment the movement. Gregory Hines was very extraordinary. RIP🕊️
I feel for you, and believe in your passion for him. I always thought he was SO underappreciated. An extraordinary dancer, singer, actor, and a sexy vibe that always seemed to brew right under his skin. I was in shock when I heard about his death. What a talent, and gone way to soon!
It's almost banal to call Hines's work here stellar. Just astonishing, and his acting performance is moving--for someone at the top of his form, Hines manages to play Raymond's regret and mental weariness along with the excitement of getting back to his art. And btw, gotta give it up to the camera work/directing/editing. Fantastic job at capturing this amazing routine in a variety of ways to highlight Hines's genius. Love this movie, underrated in its time but it's got more acclaim and appreciation over the years. Thanks so much for uploading this.
Wow, Gregory was the best, just magnificent, a dancing jewel, a great singer and actor, and with all that talent, he was a darling of a human being, I really miss him and that superior talent RIH .
An exquisite dancer, and SO under appreciated for his time. I love White Nights, but only because of Gregory Hines. Died way too soon. Love and miss him still. s
He was a very talented dancer but i will always remember him best in RUNNING SCARED. He and Billy Crystal were just an excellent team. So funny. He is missed.
I somehow came across this and its not something I'm likely to ever look up ever again, but you gotta appreciate the hours this guy must have spent perfecting his craft. It really shows
Damn!! Beautiful scene. Knowing nothing of tap dance, what a talent. He's fantastic. Watched Running Scared last night and wanted to see more Gregory Hines, this is the first thing I found. Now I want to check out White Nights.
There’s another great scene in this movie where he’s just monologuing with no score underneath accompanied by tap. He’s just talking and he lets his body tell the story just as much if not more so than the dialogue. I couldn’t find the clip on RUclips, but out of all the great dance scenes in this movie, that was the one that got me hooked on Gregory Hines.
Love Gregory, wow, if I could tap dance like that ,I'd be dancing all over the place!💃🤸♀️🥿🥿🤭It looks easy, IT AIN'T! When I was at The NC School of The Arts ,we got to select an extracurricular activity between semesters. I chose Tap dancing I'm glad it was for fun ,because it was hard
Gregory Hines ~ Agree, he was the greatest ~ He puts everything, his whole body into it ~ I took tap, jazz and ballet ~ Really loved tap dancing but out of all 3 it is the most difficult and demanding because off of your feet all of the time ~ Hines makes it "look" easy ~
I have this movie on dvd and watch it several times a month (I practically know it by heart by now), and every time I put it in the dvd player I go straight to this scene and the scene with both of them dancing. Two of my favorite scenes on my all time favorite movie. And to think that he made up this dance before he heard the song he was going to dance to... Genius!!!!
Everybody thinks this is a Baryshnikov movie. And while his own insane talent is indisputable, Hines was crushing it on stage since he was practically a toddler, well before Mikhail was even born. The man has serious skills and was taken from us far too soon. 😔
One of the most kick-ass instrumentals ever made. Foster's album had a cut version for some reason, but the movie soundtrack had the entire masterpiece.
The version on "David Foster" was the same one on the soundtrack. This version was never released. I bought a 12" single of "tapDANCE" thinking it was this version, but it was a completely different mix.
one of my fav actors of all time ... first saw him in history of the world .. mel brooks but he was great in white nights and one of my fav movies of all time... running scared with billy crystal ... a comedic classic with some drama .. a must see for anyone who likes the genre .... tap .. was great too ... classic moment is .. challenge !!!!!! .. a must see.. sammy davis and hines are funny and fantastic ... cheers

Warren Boule amazing 😭😭❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Warren for that story.
Great story. I also saw him live, in a broadway show called "Sophisticated Ladies".
He was a giant in the dance world. Wonderful mentor to young dancers, generous with sharing his knowledge and talent. He is sooooo missed.

It's always fascinated me that he can move around like that, and we never see a camera in the mirrors. The entire scene is simply fabulous.
Smart thinking about the camera

Phenomenal talent! We lost him too soon :(
We lost one of the greatest before his time. I still love to go back and watch his performances from time to time.
True

I never get tired of watching this performance. Gregory to me was the greatest tap dancer ever

You are right. His moves were amazing.
your soo right he was a master and my hero when I tap I always think of him :)
Bfr74vz I don't know of any other tap dancer
Tony Micel really? What about Sammy Davis Jr, Gene Kelly, Bill Robinson, Fred Astaire, The Nicholas brothers and all the other greats before him?
Gregory Hines dancing genius... I was such a fan he is missed.
Jaw drop 3:03 😲
Taylor Hackford really captured lightning in a bottle with this scene. R.I.P. Gregory Hines.

Yes it was a funny movie
One of my favorite movies !!
It is sad how good people and talented. Are always taken early in life. RIP! Mr Hines
Umm.. wth? That is not even remotely true lol. All throughout history and today are greats and legends abound that lived a full and fruitful life.
What a cutie he was! I still remember him in "waiting to exhale". R.I.P to a talented man
He knew more than just tape he heard and understood the music. Bravo.
He was a very nice man, he actually stopped what he was doing and gave my ex girlfriend an autograph
A great artist died young. I was astonished by his dancing in Cotton Club newly released with more of his artistry in it.

he was amazing....what a gift...i feel lucky to have been around when he was at his height....amazing, amazing, amazing!!
Amazing tap dancer! Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. had a dance off -- Hines kneeled down to kiss Davis' feet!
I am 69 years old and familiar with all the greatest tap dancers in the world. Gregory Hines is still my favorite to watch. So sorely missed.❤😢.

It was natural for natural talent
he was the best! remember seeing him perform with his family. miss his talent
That's because he had been doing it since he was like 4 years old with his brother.

Gregory learned from the best, then became the best.... brilliant tap dancer, incredible! thank for posting this...
One of my biggest inspirations and I'm a drummer. I learned how to truly hear music from his dancing.

So much talent....so very much missed.
THE greatest tap dancer that ever graced the stage. Bar None. RIP.
Feb.14: Happy birthday and RIP Dancer-actor-singer Gregory Oliver Hines (1946-2003) Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, jbbe2. Blessings
This was Gregorys best role next to "Running Scared" with Billy Crystal
Don't forget The Tic Code
He was a legend lol I love watching him tap dancing
Fantastic movie... BRILLIANT dancing!
The Discipline Of Dance - Gregory will always be a dancing inspiration to me.
I bought the movie just to have this scene. David Foster wrote the music after he watched a silent clip of Gregory Hines' performance in the studio.
Not a shining moment for foster...I'm still cramped by it
