  • Super Mario Galaxy is a game I have a lot of nostalgia for, and is my overall favourite 3D Mario game - for it's gameplay, story, and soundtrack. The grand, playful, and creative nature of the soundtrack has always inspired me, and gives each Galaxy a distinct feel - but I love that it is also not afraid to have a few tracks in there with a different tone.
My favourite songs from the game are the ones that are more melancholic, bordering on sad, usually accompanying Rosalina and her story - and I love in particular how well Gateway Galaxy's theme manages to capture those feelings. The song has always inspired thought for me, sounding playful yet having a sad, almost lonely undertone mirroring Rosalina's character - yet also feeling hopeful, and capturing the beauty and endless nature of space.
As a result, To the Gateway is probably my favourite song from the game, and I have wanted to cover or remix it for a very long time. It took quite some time to figure out how to approach this song since I hold the original so highly in regard, and I didn't want to risk altering it too much as that could easily lead to ruining it's atmosphere. Ultimately I think I managed to find a good balance between the original song and some of my own improvisations here, but most importantly I hope managed to do the original song justice with this cover.
With all of that said though, I hope you like it! If even one person enjoys something I have made, I consider it to have been worth making.

This sounds so pretty! I really like how you went with more of a remaster-styled approach here, in terms of instrumentation and arrangement. It has just the right balance of comforting familiarity and exciting newness to really deliver on both fronts.
The supporting parts really shine here, with the sustained strings (and, later, string synths) providing plenty of warmth and depth in the middle and low end. And that double-attack bell synth (first heard at 0:58) really anchors the piece in a nice way, with its recurring rhythm. And it's lovely, the way the piece concludes as gently as it begins, with that arranged ending.
Wonderful work with this remix, Jim. It's such a nice listen! 🙂
