    I learned to use my rolled hem foot when I made a tarp for my son's van. I watched videos from diy gear sites and on the silpoly tent fabric it worked great. I got over confident and tried it on a crisper shirting cotton with less success 😞. So in my experience the fabric makes a difference for sure. I made the Love Notions Ballad Blouse last summer with the shirred panel and then modified the sleeves to make them full length with a shirred wrist. It worked very well. I found the fit was similar to their Rhapsody which I know you like. I added some hand embroidery to the yolk and sleeve cuffs of a PM Cleo blouse which I get compliments on every time I wear. If I had an embroidery machine I would love to add some to night shirts and lots of other projects. It just adds a whole other level of elegance and personalisation. I look forward to seeing how you do as you work your way through the list.

      Thanks so much Cynthia! I can’t do a Make 9 with just patterns because I get distracted too easily 🤣 Just this week, I put together my plans for January, ordered and pulled fabric and the next thing I know, Cashmerette comes out with a pattern I have to make! 🤣💞

    That’s a great list of goals, Izzy! Covered buttons are really easy and you’ll like how they make a garment VERY customized. I tried shirring a couple of months ago with disastrous results - I must give it another try. My sister in law uses her embroidery machine to make a small 6”x6” block on the quilt back. She includes the recipients name, date, a personal message, etc. I love this special part of the quilt she made me.

      I’m really excited about the covered buttons. Can’t wait to make a beautiful blouse with myself. I love the look of embroidery so I can’t wait to make personalized labels for my quilts. 💞

    Great list of plans! The amazing Kenneth King has a video on inserting an invisible zipper. I used his method on a silky dressy blouse for a party and it turned out amazing. Making covered buttons is pretty simple. Sewing on shank buttons seems to be always be an issue for me. I’m sure you will have success with your plans, just need to set aside the time and get that mind set! I have not set a list of goals or plans, just starting thinking about it. Defiantly want to make a couple dresses for the warmer weather. Get free motion quilting to the point where it looks good and of course finish many of the quilts I have started. My major goal is to not purchase any more fabric. We will see how that works out! Happy Sewing!

    Some great plans/goals! My first invisible zip was on the side of a stable knit crop top I made in around 1974. They were so easy with the snap on plastic foot that the zip company offered. I used them on lots of things -- back then. I recently purchased a similar vintage foot but haven't tried it. That'll have to be one of my goals.
    I bought a serger in August that I haven't even threaded. Using that will be another goal.
    Definitely put that embroidery machine to work on quilt labels. Your quilts deserve it.
    Happy sewing, Izzy, and Happy 2024! - Kelly

    Really like your plans! Believe it or not, the first zipper I ever inserted was an invisible zipper and it took me years to try a regular one 😂. I also hate hand sewing a rolled hem. Can’t wait to see that video. I tend to just do them on my serger. I also want to make lined, wool trousers! I have the Cashmerette Miriam trousers pulled out. Now I’m just waiting for a bit of free time to make them. I can really use them. And, just get that swimsuit done. I did a whole series on swimsuits a couple years ago and let me tell you, they are way easier to make than you think. They come together quickly, fit way better, and are addictive. My favorite swimsuits to wear are the ones I’ve made. I need to make more for this year since I’ll be in the pool a lot.

BUT….now I use “ban-roll” and life just became easier! Love using this stuff!!! There are plenty of tutorials showing how to use it and it works!!!! • @lynnshepard7485
    @lynnshepard7485 9 месяцев назад +1

    Techniques…learning and perfecting them are on my 2024 list, too, Izzy. I have a few random thoughts to share. The last two machines I’ve purchased haven’t had invisible zipper feet. My dealer says they’re not needed. What? I’ve tried with the regular zipper foot, but it doesn’t roll back the edges, so I drag out my old machine to sew those. There must be a way; I need to find it. 😊
    For rolled hems and lettuce hems, I discovered that using strips of water soluble stabilizer when sewing or serging the hem makes it easier and much more beautiful! Excess stabilizer just pulls off afterwards.
    I have all the bathing suit supplies, too, but failed to make even one last year. I bought the TATB CoraLee pattern and the Helen’s Closet pattern that I’ll be trying this year. I’ve decided that this year will be the one where I focus on making myself garments rather than ones for my grandchildren. They’ve reached ages where they’re more interested in shopping for their clothes.
    I’ll be watching your journey, Izzy! There’s always much to learn from you! 💗🙌

    Great goals. I need to revisit invisible zips. I put my first invisible zips into a fleece pullover. That was a struggle. My main goal for this year is the same as last year, to bring order out of chaos by sewing from my stash.

    • @dizzyquiltsandsews
      @dizzyquiltsandsews  9 месяцев назад +1

      Wow - I can imagine how an invisible zipper in a fleece would be challenging. The first one I’m attempting is in a very stable suiting fabric so I’m hoping it’s going to be relatively easy. Good luck with your goal - I did that at the beginning of last year and it felt so good to reduce the size of my stash. 💞

    Great list Izzy - Shirring is so popular right now in ready to wear and there are some great patterns available as well! It isn’t difficult really but may take a bit of practice with your sewing machine bobbin to get it to work! Having the right tools to do things does make a big difference in how easy or difficult some things work in my humble opinion but then I am a gadget girl and I do love a good tool! 😊

    • @dizzyquiltsandsews
      @dizzyquiltsandsews  9 месяцев назад

      I agree! If a tool is going to make a task easier to learn and complete, then I’m all in. I don’t recommend a ton of tools for beginners, but then again, if a speciality tool is going to make someone love sewing, then why not?! 💞

    I enjoyed hearing about your plans for next year! On the subject of invisible zippers: The right foot made all the difference in the world. I think the instructions included in the zipper packaging do a good job at the basic insertion, and is the method that most commercial patterns use (or did for a long time) and I pretty much follow that. I tried three or four different invisible zipper foots until finding one that was ideal, and now I find them much more precise than regular zippers. 😛😁 Your machine may have a dedicated foot; my machine didn't, and I'm not able to change the needle position, so YMMV. Have fun!!

    Great goals! Making covered buttons has to be my most favourite thing to do and trust me it is so simple. Invisible zippers I find so much easier than a flap over zip especially with the special foot. I have to ask something, why lined trousers? Is this because of the fabric being itchy? I've never bought a pair or seen some in shops. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong shops 😂. Our lives are so different so love seeing the special items you make. Hope you have fun with your embroidery machine ❤. Xx

      Yes, wool trousers usually need to be lined because of the itch factor 🤣 I used to own RTW lined wood trousers early in my career and loved them. When it’s -30 degrees in the winter, they keep you nice and warm and look amazing. About the embroidery - I made the mistake of sending Marianne a picture of the kitty I managed to stitch and she now wants embroidery on her garments 🤣 xx 💞

    Great plans, Izzy.
    I made a swimming suit for Alice a few times. Remember, use clips, not pins, and if you are planning to swim in a swimming pool, check first if your elastic is chlorine resistant.
    It's like sewing underwear, just more slippery
    I do roll hem by hand. I did thousands of rolled hems when I was sewing masks, and now it goes quickly and most of the time without ironing
    I personally don't like shirring - just the feel of elastic on my skin, but I seen recently in a video by Alisa from Thoughtful Creativity trick how to do it without using shirring elastic in bobin - its on her zig zag video. I am thinking of trying this method
    I usually do lettuce hem on my machine. Although I am kind of allergic to this finish since I did lettuce hem on a skirt of Alice communion dress (3 tiers, 2 layers each of the organza, each layer was 1&3/4 of a circle).
    I avoid it as much as I can

    Check out Sandra Betzina on RUclips. She does really easy to understand techniques. I met her in person several times at sewing, expos and such and she's great. My mom had me sewing an invisible zipper when I was 15. Lol I'm older than dirt now, so I think I've done everything And I've come back full circle and I refuse to even make anything that has a zipper or a button. The very first thing I ever made when I started sewing seriously in my 20s was a satin sheath dress with a lace overlay. My friend that worked at the fabric store said you did such a good job. I can't believe you picked the hardest thing in the world to make first. And I said, why didn't you tell me it was gonna be so hard??😮 and she said you would never have tried it if I told you how hard it was gonna be.😂 I still remember going out to dinner in that dress. I used to sew clothing for sale on Etsy back when it was all homemade items. Trust me nothing had a zipper.😂❤ I will spend hours making handmade roses to put on some thing, but not a zipper. Ha ha.

      That made me laugh because when I first started sewing many years ago now, I didn’t know certain things were supposed to be hard so I went in with both feet and just got things made. I stopped sewing for a long time and because of the Internet, I know what’s more difficult and now those things scare me. 🤣

    Can 't wait to see these unfold. I will be working on #1... Insert invisible zipper, and I see in the comments that there are some good resources. My other plans are things you have already learned :)

      I received the fabric for the project that involves an invisible zip today so hoping to make the muslin this week. Fingers crossed it all works out. But I’ll definitely check out those resources. 💞

    That long story was just to encourage you and for you to know that you can do anything. And if there's some thing you don't like to do forgive yourself and move on.❤ sewing should be fun! youtube.com/@PowerSewing?si=j0-IiINpEFPhqV3N

    Do you watch karen brown of justgetitdone? She does vid on quilt labels ...she agrees re doing label b4 quilt finished/bound. Im not a quilter.
    Love your goals, would be interested in tutorials on shirring, covered buttons,rolled hems. Re invisible zips, i have 50% success rate. I do use invisible zip foot, that helps, and buying the right zipper helps too, lol!

      I don’t watch her, but I’m going to look her up! Thank you. I’ll definitely make videos about all the things I learn this year. You’re all coming along for the ride! 💞

    Well, Izzy, you nailed 6 of my goals (once I have full use of my right hand). Check out Thoughtful Creativity from this past week. She has an ingenious way to do shirring with a zigzagging. Looking forward to seeing your progress!

    I avoided an invisible zipper for a lot of years and then I saw a video where they unzipped it and ironed it flat and using my zipper foot i did the best zipper ever....I am still a hit and miss on a rolled hem,

      Yes, I think many of these goals are going to require lots of practice!
