I used a condenser mic instead of an instrument mic. In spite of hearing the rattling sounds of the furnace and ducts on the ceiling in an unfinished basement, it still sounded better and more full than an instrument mic to my ear. If I recall, it's a Rode M3.
I used a loop pedal: Ditto Mic Looper. You could use any looper, preferably one that has a mic input. Rather than use an instrument mic, I used a condenser mic (because I found it sounded better) and passed it through a small mixer and headphones, so the loops wouldn't bleed into the mix.

Wat did you put on repeat the second rhym? 🤔
The 2nd rhythm I played on the djembe goes bass, bass, slap, bass, bass, tone, tone, etc. Does that clarify what you were asking?
