    Sorry to hear about your disappointing service, Graham. It is always a worry when something that is delicate is in a delivery system for that length of time, which increases the potential for damage. You did right to video the unboxing. My heart dropped when I saw the outer box was crushed but fortunately the box inside and its contents survived. All worked out great in the end. Very pleased for you, Graham. Best, Jason.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      You hit the nail on the head there Jason, the thought of that being shuffled around and sitting somewhere for 10 days wasn’t exactly refreshing. I think the outer box must have been a Hermes box as it was strange that the inner box was just loose inside without any form of packing material, anyway, it all arrived safe and sound in the end and the loco itself is stunning. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

    Hi ya Graham. No bubble wrap. No styrofoam peanuts. Not even rolled up packing paper. That’s no way to ship something. It certainly is a beautiful loco. I guess you were a lucky one. Looks great. Sounds great. I look forward to seeing it’s inaugural run on Lakeside. Bye for now. Take care.

      I thought that very strange Norman not to have at least something inside that outer box, just to stop it moving about if nothing else but luckily it came out unscathed so that’s the main thing. Hopefully I can get it on Lakeside today and give it a proper run. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

      Hi mate and thanks for the comment. I’m one of the fortunate ones in that nothing was broken and it ran well too but as you probably know then many folk weren’t so lucky but this was the reason I did the video so as to cover my bum should there be anything wrong and to prove to Hornby that it wasn’t me who damaged it. I ordered a model railway related item on Monday afternoon this week and it arrived on Wednesday - two days, so 10 days might be the norm from Hornby but not from other suppliers. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

    Great model Graham! As soon as you mentioned Hermes my heart sank. We've just taken delivery of models from a different supplier. He usually posts by RM Parcels but they refused to take his order due to being overloaded. So he chose Hermes who promised 10day guarantee delivery! As soon as their tracking system didn't show updates we worried but, on day 6 lo and behold it arrived at the time they told us. As for pre-order, I've been bitten once by that when I found I could get the model off the shelf at much less than preorder price once it had been released. Anyway all the best for you Graham and Hazel have a great Christmas

    Had mine delivered yesterday for my wife as a surprise present for Christmas. Delivered by DHL, outer delivery box was perfect along with the main Hornby box, but opening the plastic Hornby packaging around the loco I found both of the smoke deflectors flanking the blast pipe have been snapped (one clean off). I can only assume it was done in factory or somewhere and not noticed. Sadly the vendor I got it from has no more to exchange it (apparently no one has any left according to the vendor).

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад +1

      Oh no Paul, that’s so sad to hear, the wind deflectors are one of the areas that does seem to be effected along with broken draw bars for the tender and missing/broken steps. It’s a sad state of affairs from Hornby, I don’t think I’ve heard of so many breakages in one go before now. If no replacement can be found then the only other option I guess is a full refund from Hornby or possibly a repair. Hope you get it sorted eventually mate. Cheers for now. ………….Graham

      Thank you for the kind comment Paul and also for subscribing too. I consider myself very lucky to have come through this unscathed with an unbroken loco and that it runs ok, bit strange to have to say that really as it should be like that anyway, but alas, many folk have not been so lucky and I fear that this will cost Hornby dearly - not just with the returns they are going to get back but also the faith in ordering anything from Hornby again, I know that I will never do that again, if I do buy anything from Hornby then it will be at a model shop where I can visually see it and also see it running too. A great shame but they bought this upon themselves. Cheers for now mate. ……..Graham

    Hi Graham, I watch this after your part 2 so got the details I'm interested in regarding the Sound decoder. Thanks ! Sad customer service is degrading everywhere and you're very lucky with a fine working, not damaged loco! To many 'hype - me me' jet-setters at these companies today. Only money orientated. Sings of the times. Anyway success and thanks for sharing.

      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      No problems as regards sharing mate. Something needs to be changed because this is a sad state of affairs we are which is why I did the first video in the first place - as evidence for me if anything was amis, at least I would have proof. But I shouldn’t have to do that but I know from bitter experience that I now have to hold my breath in anticipation when opening a package up containing a loco that it isn’t broken or missing parts. Sad times.

    Hi Graham, I too had to wait 10 days to get my W1, I paid for mine on 30/11/21 and it was not showing up on Hermes tracking till 6/12/21 and was still on the 10/12/21 shown as waiting to be sent. Yet later in the day i checked again it was out to me and would be with me 3pm and 6.30pm. Aside from the wait it is lovely model and arrived intact. After testing I ran it on my layout the front steps were hitting my platforms and some of my point motors . I have on my 3rd attempt managed to get the front steps to stay on and am now having to move my platforms back a bit.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      That’s not far off what I experienced too Kevin, I haven’t had to move anything back but I did have to shave a little off beginning of the platform so the steps missed it, it just grazed the platform so not much to trim off. Cheers for now mate. ………….Graham

    Hi Graham , great to see , I hope you are all ok and well.
    Stunning loco and sound fitout.
    Shame about Hornby and there system of delivery, I always buy from model shops never direct as most of the time you get a better deal buying from model shops.
    I Dread it when a seller uses Hermes as they use a lot of small sub contractors and I have seen how they treet boxes also the shipping takes a lot longer.
    I have just bought some rare Fleischmann coaches via a seller on Ebay {outside of Ebay} and the box they came in from Hermes was badly crushed and three coaches were badly damaged one coach beyond repair...the seller was great he sorted a very good part refund out.
    All the best to you and your family.
    Jim.

    Hi Graham. TOTALLY agree with EVERYTHING you are saying about having to check, double check and videoing everything we now do! 😠
    I’m afraid us oldies come from a time of trust and leaving our empty milk bottle on the door step with a £1 note sticking out the top without videoing it as evidence!
    And from a time where we as a customer were treated with respect. But I’m afraid now times are different and alien with the best example I can give you is. My bank has sent me along with obviously the 1000’s of other customers saying and l quote….. “DO NOT TRUST ANY text messages, phone calls or emails you receive as they may not be from a trusted source” So there you go young G the sign of the times we are living in! All the best and just love that new train mate ❤️

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад +2

      Yep, it’s not something I would normally do to be honest with anything being delivered but for some reason, model railway items seem to be prone to breakages or things missing completely, something strange is going on and I don’t understand it. Hence the video, luckily for me it all turned out ok but there are many folk who haven’t been so lucky and I don’t know what Hornby are going to do about it. I very much doubt if they have many in stock to replace the broken ones sent back to them so I guess it’s either going to be a repair or a refund. It’s a shame that Hornby themselves are being very quiet about this situation and I fear that this is going to cost them dearly. Cheers for now mate. ………..Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston Here is an update on my replacement Hornby W 1 Hush Hush . I sent it back on Friday 17/12/2021 and surprise , surprise i received my replacement today Wednesday 22/12 / 2021 . That's only a wait time within four working days. Quite a contrast from my waiting time of more than fourteen days via Hermes . So there you go Hornby can do it when they try . This time it was sent well packed via DPD unlike the Hermes packing . The loco and tender are in mint perfect condition with no parts bent , broken or falling off therefore there is no damage to the loco or tender and it runs super smooth forward and reverse from a crawl straight out of the box . I have not even ran it in yet and only had to apply around 20% mark power on my Gaugemaster TS power controller for the smooth crawl with no cogging whatever . I did notice that the inner plastic casing had additional pieces of foam padding guarding the smoke deflectors . Also from now on i am going to ask for delivery via DPD for peace of mind regarding transit even if it means extra postage costs . I think Hornby should stop using Hermes as a courier .So my opinion of this model just now is WOW ! What a beauty and a superb runner and well worth the wait after my previous encounter with it .This is the best Christmas present i have ever bought for myself and i shall cherish it and love . Hi Andy and thanks for the comment. I’m not actually interested in ordering on pre-orders now. All it does (for me) is to highlight that a particular product is due for release in the future at some date - don’t ever take any notice of a preorder date, when have you ever had a model arrive on a pre-order date? I will just wait until it’s actually out and then try and get whatever it is from a local model shop and if I can’t get it then so be it. Hopefully this will be running on Lakeside today. @@GrahamFoulston I'll wait a day or two first before calling anyone, Gee. If they don't reply to my email, then I will complain by phone. For as you know it can be difficult to get thru to them. With covid being the biggest excuse, these days. For not getting/doing anything when you have a problem or issue. I know it is a severe problem that we are all facing and going thru. I've lost two family members already to it, an aunt, and a cousin. Then the worry of my mum (90) could be next in the nursing house. With the virus knocking out any Hornby staff if they test positive. Unless they can self-isolate, and they can work from home via any computer networking servers. They would have less phone operators on the desk. So, I'm take it they don't have spares and the small part like the steps will have to be shipped from China. I'll let you know later if there is a result on the matter. I watched Sam Trains review about his W1 unboxing and I am scared to even try running both locos. Yep, you read that right, I bought the two, so I've double the trouble. That’s because as far as I know there are no genuine sound recordings of the Hush Hush, sure there are a few clips of it but no full recordings as far as I know so that’s why I just put in an A4 decoder I had knocking around. Considering that this was made in 1930 and retired in 1936 then I doubt very much if there is anyone alive now that would be able to say what is right or what is wrong. Who cares? I certainly don’t, as long as it makes some form of steam sound then that will do for me and my layout. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

      Well it took Hornby four days from taking my £200 to getting it despatched to Hermes, virtually every other retailer I order from - even non model railway - get it despatched either the same day or the following day, not four days later. But you are right, Hermes took 6 days which is a ridiculous amount of time even taking Christmas, Covid and everything else into consideration. Was there a reason you ordered from Hornby direct eg guarantee of supply as I know Hornby were telling dealers of restricted supply (following their new supply rules I imagine). I pre-ordered from Cheltenham MC at £179 then Hornby raised prices to £197. Mine shipped yesterday and I did a quick check across the internet to see that most were sold out and those that are available asking the full rrp. The Apple Green one is due in January 2022. Looking fwd to yr next video of the speaker upgrade, if you can show you doing it that would be of interest ie to see the space available Was the sound decoder the Hornby A4 TTS decoder? Cheers

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      Hi Paul, the decoder was actually from YouChoos and not a TTS version. I sold an A4 but took the sound decoder out and replaced it with a standard decoder before selling it so this was spare. I had mine originally pre-ordered from Rails of Sheffield but of course Hornby in their infinite wisdom changed all that so the pre-order was cancelled by Rails, I then pre-ordered it through Hornby at £197 but that will be the last time I do that and I think from what a lot of folk are saying then it won’t just be me. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston Thanks. As an addendum, I have ordered the Apple Green version from Hornby with my 10% Collectors Club discount. Having seen the atrocious packing from Hornby on the Sams Train feed, I have emailed Hornby Customer service, copying in both their Marketing and Collectors Club editorial for their comments on the packaging and how/who is doing it as it seems to me just a panic job by Hornby in the warehouse to get them out of the cartons from China and chuck them in individual cartons to the customer with zero packing or care just so they can bill them and say they have been shipped before Xmas. The packing (or lack of it) is absolutely atrocious, and what can you do as they have none to replace it...

    Hi Graham, it is good to see you got your model all in one piece after the long wait, that really should have been only a matter of 3-5 days. In my case my initial email was on the 30-11-2021 to say my order for the Hush Hush 4-6-4 arrived at the warehouse and was followed up on the 1-12-21 that it was being prepared for dispatch. Also, on the 1st of Dec the payment was also taken from my account. On the 6th of Dec, an email received to say the shipment has been dispatched this day and to arrive soon. The 7th of Dec it entered the Hermes Network and on the ninth at the national sorting hub. The 11th it is further tracked as at the customers local depot and on the 12th on the way to courier. I have since then received a mobile text to inform me that it will be delivered on the 13th of Dec.
    Graham check your order to see if you received the correct model ordered. Hornby release R3840 LNER Class W1 Hush Hush 4-6-4 Era 3 as the original prototype locomotive. The R3841 is the LNER Class W1 Hush Hush 4-6-4 Era 3 'British Enterprise' with nameplates (they were made, but never had fitted). Judging by your Lakeside footage you have this latter version R3841. Since Hornby first announced it was to make the RTR Class W1, the listed alternative versions (known from Hornby press releases and catalogue posts) of the various models to be released include:
    R3840 in LNER Lined Grey original prototype.
    R3841 in LNER Lined Grey British Enterprise.
    R3842 in LNER Lined Green promotional livery.
    R3843 in LNER Lined Blue with an A4 smokebox front.
    R3844 in BR Green 'Pegasus' with an A4 smokebox front.
    R3978 in LNER Photographic Grey with an A4 smokebox front.
    R3979 in LNER Lined Grey Prototype with double blast pipe.
    R3980 in BR Lined Green with an A4 smokebox front.
    Enjoy your model on Lakeside while I hope mine will be damage free too, whenever it does decide to come in the post. Though do me a favour and keep it all to yourself (hush-hush like) for now, LOL.

    I love,, and really look forward to your videos. No criticism about your comments, on this video, but I would like to think that there are factors I think you should take into consideration, social distance working so things can take longer to process , short staff as staff are properly off work with COVID.. a shortage of lorry drivers, more parcels being delivered this time of year. I think waiting 10 days for your delivery to arrive, is nothing to complain about when you think what’s going on in the world at the moment. Glad you got it in the end. I just returned a Hornby LNER 01, knocking valve gear, It was from Amazon, I opted for a exchange as it was a good price at the time, Thankfully the replacement is fine other than the body was covered in oil and front coupling not in the pack, poor show on Hornbys part once again, my review reflected that

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад +1

      Agreed, the trouble is that as far as I know then most of the products coming from Hornby (and other manufacturers) are coming out of China. Will they learn? Of course they won’t but with the amount of failures I’m seeing just on the social media I go on then it’s a high failure rate - and that doesn’t include the poor folk who don’t post on social media. The model shop I went to yesterday had a failure rate of 4 out of 5 so 4 have been sent back to Hornby leaving the poor model shop to foot the bill until Hornby reimburse him or with replacement models - doubtful. This will cost Hornby dearly. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

    After almost a wait of 2 years, 10 days is not really a big deal. Still waiting on mine since I've ordered the green and blue ones from my local shop. Might get the early BR one too. Not been funny but, if that is the quality of the sound, I'm glad I'm still a DC man, and if you wanted the one without the nameplates, then they've sent you the wrong one.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      It might not be a big deal to you David but it was to me and I wasn’t talking about from the time it was announced, I was talking (and you know this) about from when they took £200 off me and the time it eventually took to actually get to me - you think that’s ok in this day and age do you? OK fine. Consider this then. You go to a model shop, you see something you like, you pay them £200 and they say to you thank you very much, we will get this to you in 10 days. You still think that’s fine? Even if you do, I don’t, so we will end it there. Cheers for now. ……..Graham

    Superb model, so glad it was undamaged. As far as Hornby goes, they are too quick to blame Covid for their delays. Last year (January) I purchased their club membership (I am in Australia) 3 to 4 months before my paperwork arrived, no club magazine or “free” loco. It was a further 2 months before that arrived. By the end of the year I received the second “quarterly” magazine. Never received the other two magazines. I made several enquiries to Hornby and all I got was apologies and Covid was the cause 🤬🤬. This year Australians were precluded from joining, the excuse this time, not Covid, but BREXIT. When we were finally allowed to join, no free loco, you guessed it…BREXIT. This time we had to pay extra for the annual loco. So I declined to join, I got next to nothing out of the previous years membership, so why should I join this year or ever again.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад +1

      I agree with you 100% Bruce, it just seems Hornby are shooting themselves in the foot on a regular basis, I don’t know what will become of Hornby in the future but if they don’t buck themselves up soon then things are going to go even further downhill for them and they only have themselves to blame - not Covid, not Brexit or any other excuses they want to pull - it’s down to them. As a company then they should be forward thinking like most companies to help them survive and also keep their customers happy too, if they can’t or won’t do this then the inevitable will happen. Just my opinion that’s all. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

    Great video graham the hush hush is a locomotive I will get myself one day but I’m going for the rebuild version as that is my overall favourite.
    Sound to me is a waste of time personally I just think it is a silly thing to fit especially as I have heard that the sound is not in sync with the speed of a locomotive, maybe I will try sound one day but right now it isn’t a priority for me.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  3 года назад

      I won’t go into the DC/DCC thing David, there’s no point but there is far more to DCC than just incorporating sound. If you prefer DC then that’s fine, but I did say in the video (twice) that what you will hear as regards the sound will be low quality (a) because of the speaker used initially and (b) the actual recording of the video. When I hear this in real life on my track then to me it sounds great but then my standards of what a steam loco should sound like is nowhere near what you would expect to hear, (again, I said this in the video) but as long as I’m happy with the sound then that’s fine. And let’s face it, you are never going to hear this model of mine in real life - only a recording. Cheers for now mate. …………Graham

    What a beautiful locomotive that is and the sound was far better with the bigger speaker. I am also disappointed about Hornby. (Not that I can afford to buy new anyway) I have said this before, Simon, bring Hornby back to Margate and get rid of the excessively high costs of shipping and quality control will be more controllable. Oh, but the cost of labour would be far greater. With modern-day machines, the labour force would be smaller. Hornby could then be the number one for Model Railways. Would it not be better to make a smaller profit, but have a much bigger and happier customer base. (I hope he gets to read this.) Martin. (Thailand) Good luck with the Hush-Hush Graham and best wishes to Heather.
