"do we need to talk about how the episode is about buffy forgiving herself?"
you'd be surprised how many reactors don't actually seem to get that.

I love this episode so much! Despite my general apathy for the Buffy/Angel ship, the situation they find themselves in at the end of this episode is just too deliciously angsty and poetic for me not to be moved by it. Both of them, through ghost possession, being able to express true feelings about their actual relationship (and then later being jerked back to reality after the possession ends) was such a great writing decision to get them emotionally vulnerable with each-other while Angel still has no soul.
Not to mention the goosebumps I get when, after seeing the hallway scene twice, you are expecting the exact same dynamic to play out again -- but then its revealed that Buffy is playing the part of James, and all of his words fit so perfectly with what she has been going through losing Angel. So good!

I keep thinking maybe Willow's exorcism would have worked if Cordelia hadn't added "totally" to the spell wording XD

Yes, it's about Buffy forgiving herself but it's also about Buffy wanting Angel's forgiveness because she feels that she killed him. Everything that the ghost of Ms. Newman said to the ghost of James also goes as what Angel would say to Buffy if he could, that he knows it was an accident and he loved her till the very end.

One amusing, probably unintentional touch is that the relationship the hosts have to each other lines up pretty well with how intensely the fateful ghost scene is acted.
The teacher and the janitor who barely know each other play the scene much more subdued than the first pair, and Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz go even harder than the teenage couple. Two middle aged adults who barely know each other can't muster nearly as much emotion as the teenage couple, and the teenage couple can't match Buffy and Angel in a melodrama competition. Your typical teenage couple just can't out-drama star-crossed lovers torn apart by a tragedy of impulsiveness and forced by circumstance to be enemies.

Angelus stepping into the role of Ms. Newman definitely takes the episode from good to amazing.
Love your make-up by the way!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

If you didn’t recognize Xander’s line @7:24, it’s a riff on “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore” from Network (1976), which has also been sampled to hell and back by bands in several genres (e.g. “Corporate Slave” by Snog; 90’s industrial/techo, if that’s your thing). It’s also quite the film, although I admit it’s been so long since I’ve seen it, I’ve forgotten most of it.
One thing I like about this one. There have been some offhand remarks by characters regarding the skeevy age difference between Buffy and Angel; this is, it think, the first time it’s been commented on so heavily by the writers, albeit slightly obliquely. It feels to me that they’re saying in part, “no, see; we know it’s not a good thing.”

Not every reactor gets the metaphor correct - which is kind of surprising all told... so it's good that you confirmed that you did, indeed, understand the point.
Also, I never knew how much I needed to see Buffy pointing a gun at Angel and screaming "DON'T WALK AWAY FROM ME, BITCH!" but here we are. ;)

I always thought I Only Have Eyes For You was a great stand alone episode, where the tragic love affair between the teacher and student from the 1950's is repeated down through the years by anyone who is influenced by it in the school now. Great writing here in a very atmospheric episode, in which we also have the Angelus/Drusilla/Spike triangle in the background. Interesting that Buffy has no empathy for the student in the incident, of course she is using her own experience of being hurt and reflecting this in her attitude. Another interesting thing about this episode is we hear Snyder and Police Officer mention 'The Mayor' for the first time. Great scene at the end when Spike is now able to walk and is plotting his revenge. This is very much in the style of X-Files type episode, great writing again.

I loved your reaction to this one! I've been worried that your feelings about Buffy/Angel would make the twist fall flat for you... But it didn't and your excitement when that moment happened was so much fun! I think the reason it probably still works even without liking the pairing is that you can really sympathize with Buffy and her guilt and broken heart. But, yes, if you ship them there's an extra layer of excitement/screaming 😛
I think you picked up on it, but it's the only detail I wasn't 100% positive you got.. buffy feels like a murderer. Having sex with Angel "killed" him and replaced him with Angelus. It's not her worrying that she will have to kill him in the future or struggling with a break up or anything. I think you got it and totally don't need this clarification, but I absolutely love this episode and get excited about discussing the parallels!
I just love how the episode tricks you into thinking this is garbage filler, can be ignored, and then right at the end, "nope, this is main arc!" The snakes and bees and locker monsters are all misdirects. The details don't matter, the point of all that is just to convey he's angry and can use the anger to do scary things lol. But I've seen other reactors get really fixated on "what do the snakes mean?" And sort of miss the point. So so much fun watching you get it right when the turn happens 😄

I think Willow had to be getting some sort of credits for teaching -- either elective class credits or internship credit that would count later if she tried for a teaching certificate. I had to assume that both spirits were there and not just James. That's how she was finally able to forgive him . Buffy felt as if she had "killed" Angel by causing him to lose his soul leaving behind the demon who wears his face. And that made her the "James" in their relationship. Then with Angel being a vampire, the woman teacher gets to wake up at the bottom of the stairs and go back up to finally say what she wanted to James.

Buffy doesn't identify with James because she's fighting Angelus, the souless fiend. She feels like she killed Angel, her boyfirend, the one who loved her. There's a reason she phrased it like this: "He destroyed the person he loved most in a moment of blind passion." She thinks it's her fault and can't forgive herself.

Enjoyed the reaction. The moment when they got possessed was really impactful with how much sudden meaning and weight it had for the characters's personal mess, going from monster of the week to an arc-important episode. Surprisingly (frustratingly) some other reactors don't understand that Buffy is working through her guilt and trauma here, even though it spells it out

A bunch of stuff did seem a bit random. Technically I think it does fit with the mythology of hauntings because that’s what we do: we ascribe any random weird event to the growing “evidence”. That’s how the myth grows.

Comment before watching: I love, love, love this episode, because it's about Buffy's inability to forgive herself for a mistake that she didn't know would be a mistake. That resonates with me a lil too deeply.
Sometimes reactors don't catch that Buffy is angry at the ghost because she is angry at herself -- she judges herself as having 'killed' Angel in a moment of blind passion. With boinking rather than a gun, of course. It's ok if you don't catch it, there's a lot going on! ❤❤But I predict with 85% certainty that you'll get it, b/c you're a smart cookie.
EDIT: I shouldn't have doubted you! Lol. Also I think you saw even more in this ep than I did! I have only ever thought of it as Buffy thinking she killed Angel and now Angelus is wearing his body. You pointed out that she's also prepping to potentially kill Angelus. Damn, Buffy, that's a lot of guilt!
I've always thought that Dru doesn't really "get" monogamy (due to her mental illness, which is due to Angelus' torture). I imagine that if you want her, you might have to fight to stay interesting to her! But that's just my headcanon. She doesn't even seem to register that Angelus is taunting Spike! I just love these characters so much :-)

Buffy feels like she already killed Angel. In a moment of passion, which was the sex in her case, not the anger about being dumped.

Joss said this episode was the moment he realized Angel, "could carry his own show" when he saw David Boreanaz acting as Angelus under the spell of the female teacher. What is disappointing is that the episode doesn't show a lot of it because of the intercuting with the characters who started it all happening when he's supposed to be giving his lines.

I like how the writers distinguish throughout the series between fairy tale deaths and actual realistic deaths. Shootings in American schools were increasing at the time this was made, and were a major cause of anxiety to students. So the writers made the gun a supernatural gun which disappeared at the end of the scene, to avoid raising the troubling issue of an actual gun at school. This allowed the episode to explore the issue of school shootings in a way that was not too scary for their main demographic, HS students.

I get what happened between Buffy and Angel but it was kinda of sickening, did Angel get possessed to play the part and I don’t blame Buffy for never forgiving him, what happened to the lady that got shot when she was talking to the custodian or didn’t that happen, I guess I missed something??
