Today we honor one of the goats of chemistry, Alexander Shulgin. I also learned that I might have achieved a new level of stupidity due to me not reading the procedure correctly. Enjoy chemistry kings and queens.

I would never imagine I'd see the words "making" and "shulgin" together in a RUclips video
on top of it _"sponsored by squarespace"_
T. Shulgin R.I.P! Thank you for your insane work! Also Tikal!
*Tihkal
@@emmad6683 Korrekt!
I remember him writing about the potential of writing at "HiHKaL", or "Histamines I Have Know and Loved"..... i know Hamilton Morris has done A LOT of great work & interviews/videos & research into all kinds of 'chemicals', and he HAS brought up the Shulgin's many times; but i wonder who out there might have any logs, journals, notes, research notes, etc., of Alexander & Ann Shulgin....🤔
I would LOVE to see/hear somebody go into some depth of the "Histamine-IHKAL" idea, AND if theres any sort of existing journals or notes of theirs that hasnt been published in their well known books. Or just any of material, period. They were both brilliant in intelligence, emotion, & Spirit.
RIP Sasha & Ann Shulgin.
.....the Shulgins I Have Known & Loved ❤🔥⚗🧪🔬💊
You are greatly missed & highly respected 🙏🕉☯
Theres a nonprofit, also the shulgin index and pages of notes as well. Also he did write a book before he died archiving various Isoquinolinkids @kaebee1129
I hadn't realized Ann had passed 😭 I was fortunate enough to have attended Sasha's memorial service (appropriately held at Berkeley School High!)
They were both brilliant minds and lovely people.
Whoops idk how this video got downloaded to my computer.
for purely educational reasons I presume, just like me
Dont worry, it happens to a lot of chemistry "students"
@@badrinathrs all these people making perfumes like our host here, incredible how popular this hobby is 😅
I'm just really into fragrances 🤪🤪@@fmdj
What sinister thing is this used for
So today I learned my dyslexic ass has been reading Shulgin's name as Shuglin for 20 FUCKING YEARS.
My dyslexic ass took almost the whole video trying to figure out the difference between the two different spellings
The struggle is real.
Watching this video with my phone propped up on PiHKAL & TiHKAL was absolutely surreal
Shulgin was a great man who had a rare talent of being able to predict certain things in the future. Still wish I had all his letters from the early 90s.
love the uni talks too
Wait did you personally know him?
Wdym With all his letters
@@MRblazedBEANS He was well known for answering most letters people sent to him
Missing details detected.
Yeah, β-Nitrostyrenes just oiling out is annoying.
Beautiful crystals you got there. But the 2,5-dimethoxy substituted ones are even prettier. Those shiny/sparkling bright orange crystals are a feast for the eyes.
Great video. Keep it up.
I concur
well done sir enjoyed that, we all miss alex his methods of figuring out new pathways of subtituted phenythlamines hopefully that research continues its interesting to know whats still possible discoverable new compounds with research
When he said “I’ll redo it” I was like yay more chem! Also if possible I’d love to see some purity analysis, NMR perhaps 🤔 I just like data
I made some of this once from almond extract and RC fuel, lol...no crystals though, it was more of a test than anything. Great video, Shulgin would be proud of that +95% yield!
Yeah kinda surprised at how well it worked. There has to be a little water or solvent in there tho. I tried to get it out under vacuum, but we will see after it’s in my drying chamber. Can’t wait for your next one brother!
I really appreciate you taking the time to make videos about certain questionable compounds, they’re more interesting than most other people’s chemistry videos. And way to pay respect to Shulgin 😊
Great job and great yield! Good that you caught where you went wrong in the procedure - sometimes finding that is tricky.
Rest in peace Dr. Shulgin.
That recrystallization was some of the coolest shit I've ever seen
Still my favorite online chemistry teacher! I remember reading thru Sasha's findings and being absolutely obsessed! Even managed to make it out to his property once! I'm so lucky to find so many interesting people in this life

"Who would've known following procedures makes reactions happen?" had me cracking up!
Very cool stuff, thanks for sharing ❤
As someone who is a huge fan of shulgns work I would personally love to make a large batch of 2C-B or my favorite 2C-I. It's such a amazing drug it sucks very few humans have tried it. It puts mushrooms and lsd to shame nearly impossible to have a bad trip on 2C-I set and setting doesn't seem to matter with that class of drugs. The body feeling of mdma with the crazy visual of high dose LSD.
I once took 250mg of 2C-I and I tripped hard for 17 hours the come down lasting about a day. These were the early days of the silk road and erowid wasn't a thing yet. I never missdosed myself ever again that's for sure.
@@Widderic yeah all it takes is one accidental high dose to either learn to be careful or never have the opportunity to do drugs again
@@Scotty-vs4lf Oh I did them again I was just careful. But I'm 36 now and I probably only have a mushroom trip once every 5 years. DMT on the other hand is short acting so I'll do that occasionally.
@@Widderic i more meant that either u learn your lesson or accidently overdose lol, but thats obviously not as much of an issue with psychedelics
just out of curiosity do u ever do dissociatives?
@@Scotty-vs4lf I experimented with dextromethorphan in highschool and had some of the most intense fractal visuals I've ever had. Other than that, I experimented with ketamine for a little bit but was never into disassociatives all that much, they made me feel awkward and anxious.
Methanol has an odor like ethyl alcohol which mildly stings the nostrils but with a hint of sweetness. It's nice.
Wording in procedure is so damn important. I wanted to prepare N-(2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl)-2-formylpyrrole by reaction of 2-formylpyrrole and dinitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride. But couldn't get it done with KOH as base (according to procedure). Had to do it with NaH and still got only ~20% yield (report with KOH gave ~55% yield).
Thanks for making a yt channel with all the necessary steps to make amphetamines its like john black super chemist all over again.
John was a gift to thousands of garage chemists around the world. A great dude who took the time to sit down with anyone that needed help understanding or solving a problem. He had the makings to be a great chemist. But unfortunately a life time of drug use and the resulting mental illness is the story we have to tell.
just sayin, 2cb and 2ct7 are both really special…
2ce was one of my all time favourites. And the candidate list is very long.
Oh how I miss the days of discrete and responsible sharing of 'research chemicals' across the planet.
one day I'll do 2ct7
@@kirkc9643where do you cool kids find all the kewl stuff, I’ve only found mda, which was kewl
@@kirkc9643scene is still going obviously most of these are gone, tryptamines are mostly ignored by feds. Scene did get fucked up by all hedonistic compounds
Ahhhh, Aleksander my beloved.
literally today at school I had to make polystyrene for an assignment, kind of feels like a 4th wall break
Impressive work! I would love to see yiu try your hand on (2S) N-methyl-1-phenylpropan-2-amine, very interesting substance, and would make a hell of a title!
Well I'm sure that three letter agency wouldn't be ghosting him anymore
I have that set of stir bars your cross shaped one came from. That thing rocks!
A convenient part of doing stuff Shulgin did is that you can absolutely do it in a shed. He already proved that :D
garage chemist unite!
The difference is many of the chemicals are restricted and or watched.
Having an oil might be fixed by using a starter crystal of b-nitrostyrene as a nucleating site. Great vid man! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing you progress from where you started to now!
It is likely that beta-nitrostyrene can crystallize into a few different polymorphs, hence the differences in color/recrystallization patterns. It would be really interesting to isolate a few of the polymorphs and perform a melting point analysis on each of them!
Sweet! I love chemdelic's work
Videos like this a wonderful vibe of a meticulously crafted and executed shit post. With a delicate bouquet of "you're on a list now". Exquisite.
Mmmmmmmm phenethylamines. Just kidding I’m a 100% law abiding citizen.
Bro quit being a weenie. Just because you're interested in phenyl ethyl amines doesnt mean your doing illegal things.
Boring~~~
Just a small advice, if i can say something here, but it would be great to have the molecule of every reagent you add next to their name, so people who are not chemist know what you're adding.
Anyway great content, im subbing!
Great suggestion!
I wish more people would try to be like shulgin!!
Shulgin is responsible for so, soo many of the most intense, beautiful, and ultimately important and transcendent/transformative experiences I’ve ever had the opportunity and/or pleasure to submit my ego and soul to.
Thanks for the guide
Cant wait to henry benzaldehyde with nitroethane!
Ive been waiting for this thanks man
Ah when I see you recrystallize the B-Nitrostyrene I could finally understand what shulgin describe when he wrote about how certain things looked!
Thank you chEminem
Great vid bruv👍you'r smashing it
As a young man I remember being floored finding out I lived just a few miles from the house where many these famous experiments took place. RIP
I love that stir bar bro 👍.
The colour change when you add the recrystalisation solvent is probably a solvent dependant effect caused by the aromaticity of the whole molecule. It would be interesting to see what other colours you would get with a range of polar and non-polar solvents like DCM, DMSO, acetone, THF, etc.
More yellow chemistry please 😊
Alexander shulgin and Anne truly had the world figured out.
just gorgeous watching those crystals grow
I know a similar synthesis with nitroethane and benzaldehyde.
N-butylamine was the base. This was perfomed without any water but toluene as a solvent.
By refluxing with a dean stark trap the water was removed. As water is one of the reaction products the reaction was driven forward and after cooling down the toluene and recrystalizing from isopropanol the yield was about 95%.
Nice bright yellow huge needle like crystals which cause allergy like Symptoms upon skin contact.
I’ll be doing this exact reaction soon for a video :)
@@chemdelic waiting for it!
Swing and a foul , swing 2 and a grand slam .
Well done sir .
And don't worry about the Feds knocking on your door at 3AM .
They don't knock .
and to think we could have lost you to engineering instead of getting this vid
Use a Dean stark apperatus so the water gets constantly removed. Works like a charm for those nitro aldol condensations.
Guess what/who inspired my name many many years ago....
Hard to say for sure. Lol
Rip Alexander Shullgin. Looks like a fun reaction.❤
If it is hydrogenated, it will be phenethylamine (amphetamine's cousin)
YES! R.I.P Alexander Sasha Shulgin!
Why not use Ammonium Acetate? That'd seem a little easier. Less temp control needed.
A really nice way of purifying is stirring for an hour with a dilute solution of sodium bisulfate, the Unreacted benzaldehyde gets converted to the adduct which is soluble
*bisulfite. bisulfate doesnt form adducts iirc and the acidity might wreck the whole solution so I would not recommend it
It will also react with nitroalkenes in a michael addition.
@@NautsuJJR crude product should obviously be washed with water an adjusted to neutral pH
@@sazxcdewq123 I used this method many many times, never noticed any side reactions
Finally someone to take on the legacy of chemplayer
Where do you find these procedure texts like at 10:32? I haven't been able to find anything useful online myself so far
Have a look at Tikal and Pikal. They are available free on line but also available as a beautiful hardcover that makes a nice coffee table book.
😅
Erowid, the hive, rhodium archive, sciencemadness, etc.
Yeah, not doing any other reactions… just this one… 👌
Shulgin as in Ecstasy?
I have all PIHKAL and TIHKAL volumes. Theyre fun to read even if you're not trying to do something.
Looks good in the end
The legend drops yet another banger video 🔥
Appreciate that big dawg❗️🙏
Shulgin is one of my favorite scientists of all time
Dude you rock!
Formylation of 4 methoxy phenol when? Id love to see a video about the magnesium salt method
every chemist worth his salt will have these 2 books In or near the lab!
Algo boost! generally speaking a crystal flute
Can you do a video on reducing this to phenethylamine? I feel like there aren’t nearly enough videos on this for such a common reaction.
That 8.12% yield from an 85 in paper. He just like me for real for real
The chemdelic special 😤😤
@@chemdelic I remember from university geting better yields (substitued benzaldehyde, longer nitroalkane) by using anhydrous methanol and THF 1:3 by volume as a solvent; to a saturated solution of given aldehyde in this solvent a 20% excess of nitroalkane was added and diethylaminoacetate was used as a catalyst. Solution was left in cooling water bath overnight. Next day the solution was transfered to a beaker and left to cool in a fridge. The resulting nitroalkene crystallized in about 2 hours from the solution, the crystals were filtered and washed on filter with more of the solvent (cooled in the fridge beforehand) and the product was used in further synthesis. Of course, for academic purposes only.
Probably that your product was stuck in the methanol phase.
In this case, your product is really insoluble in water, so it could pull methanol out of the water and stay as a solution.
You could've tried to put the oil in vacuo and see if any crystals formed.
Since you dripped the acid in the methanol/water phase, the concentration of methanol was slowly decreasing, thus forming an oil. By dripping the methanol in the acid, you essentially drop the methanol concentration to basically 0, making the product precipitate.
Forbidden Captain Crunch
What a super nice synthesis
Do you think methanol and nitromethane could be substituted with ethanol and nitro ethane?
Beautiful xtals.
dammit, I read nitrostyrene and thought this was going to be more energetic
Thank you for your efforts.
Please Can you make a video about the synthesis of sodium ethyl sulfate from sulfuric acid and ethanol with sodium carbonate without using any other materials?
Reported to FBI for inconsistent smell practice
Any worry of a mixture with cis-geometry about the double bond? Or does sterics pretty much rule that out
Love the vid and channel❤️
A vendor of grey market chems had this a while back and it was before i had access to 2cb so i almost bought it. Ik its not active but it was just having smt close to it was cool
go on! continue
everyone I knew who made the mistake of going into synthetic chemistry for grad school and shortening their lifespan due to 80 hour work weeks, frustration of teaching intro labs to Pre Med undergraduates, and the constant anxiety of seeing their total synthesis PhD projects scooped at the end of their 4th year always took the Pihkal and Tihkal preps and quoted yields to be either an amalgam of multiple, un-connected, repetitions of each (ie the optimization results for each), or straight up lies Shulgin's reputation and position in the lore and mythology of this area of culture will never be supplanted, but its a simple fact:
David E Nichols and his grad students contributed more, with more concrete importance, than Shulgin by about 3 orders of magnitude. Shulgin's books even include his synthesis of Nichols' inventions
5:10 "well that looks like oil, America might invade" ahahah this one is epic
good job
nice yields in that 2nd run
A part of shulgins legacy with psychodelics is changing your life for the better and living healthier. And while psychodelics help heal the mind, do you know what really heals the body? Thats right, it's BPC 157. Could you make me while again by showing the process of making it one day as well?
that's a peptide, that'd be extremely difficult to make for a youtube video, like it'd make ex&f's cubane journey look short and easy
I tried that for a tendon injury, I think the TB500 was much better. Then again I was doing a lot of rehabilitate it at the time, was it the combo or just that it'd already being healing for 18 months by then.
Can you make 2,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde?
The madlad did it
6,9-DimeFOXYbenzaldehyde 😎
Yeah I'm not making spicy nitro anytime soon my ventures into botanics got me enough trouble
It's a nitroalkene, not alkane. No saturation here! oh, and the chloride is not the Bronsted base in an aqueous environment ;)
W video as always bruv😎🤝🙈

the yellow chemistry tax is goin outta control. shoot forgot: chemistry workup gooning lol
Nice work! If you start from 3, 4, 5 trimethoxy benzaldehyde, is the procedure using the same measurements? Thanks!
There is a 3-4 methylenedioxy analog of beta nitrostyrene I’m assuming?
Will this same procedure work if you start with 3-4 methylenedioxy benzaldehyde (piperonal)?
