Practice listening first until you can pick up every syllable sound that's used in the Japanese language from any listening source, be it tv shows, game shows, or anime. Music is not a good source for listening practice because a lot of syllables are elongated to keep with the notes. Next you'll need to learn the writing systems starting with Hiragana. Make sure you memorize this as moving on from this point without having a firm grasp on hiragana is going to make the next one that much harder. Second will be katakana; this has the exact same number of characters that replicate the same syllable sounds but their uses are different. Third would be Kanji; the borrowed characters from Chinese. There's roughly 2500 of these characters in common use, realistically, you'll only need to learn about 1300-1600 of them as a foreigner depending on the method you use to learn them; the rest you can easily pick up as you come across them. Kanji is usually used to write out the root word while hiragana is used for the prefix or suffixes. Example would be Sleep vs Sleeping vs Slept. Sleep would be written using Kanji while the rest is written in hiragana. That's not EXACTLY how it works but using this system, you'll get it right about 7-8/10 times XD Katakana has 2 uses in everyday writing. This might help your brain sort out what it's hearing as supposed to vaguely guessing at what some of the syllable sounds actually are.

Where should I go to learn
@@LizzyNightingale Japanese is pretty straight forward as a spoken language. Practice listening first until you can pick up every syllable sound that's used in the Japanese language from any listening source, be it tv shows, game shows, or anime. Music is not a good source for listening practice because a lot of syllables are elongated to keep with the notes.
Next you'll need to learn the writing systems starting with Hiragana. Make sure you memorize this as moving on from this point without having a firm grasp on hiragana is going to make the next one that much harder. Second will be katakana; this has the exact same number of characters that replicate the same syllable sounds but their uses are different.
Third would be Kanji; the borrowed characters from Chinese. There's roughly 2500 of these characters in common use, realistically, you'll only need to learn about 1300-1600 of them as a foreigner depending on the method you use to learn them; the rest you can easily pick up as you come across them.
Kanji is usually used to write out the root word while hiragana is used for the prefix or suffixes. Example would be Sleep vs Sleeping vs Slept. Sleep would be written using Kanji while the rest is written in hiragana. That's not EXACTLY how it works but using this system, you'll get it right about 7-8/10 times XD
Katakana has 2 uses in everyday writing. One is to spell out foreign/borrowed words, the other is to break up text that would otherwise be written in all hiragana to make it easier to read. Not all words in Japanese use Kanji to write out the root word when writing. In times where you have multiple words being spelled out in hiragana(as per the norm) you can break up the text by spelling some of them in katakana to differentiate one word from another.
P.S You could also learn Hiragana first THEN practice listening before you continue with the other two writing systems. This might help your brain sort out what it's hearing as supposed to vaguely guessing at what some of the syllable sounds actually are.
