Leaving the Irish Army, starting and failing at running my own company.
Driving a cab, working security, illegal immigrant, and getting offered a very dangerous job in the worst city in the world.
Hi Kevin. I heard you mention my name and I cringed wondering if your comments would be kind. I am so grateful you remember it the way you do. We were kids, (old kids perhaps) but innocence in a very strange way looking to do the right thing, trying to figure it all out. On one level, we hadn't a clue, on another level, we were pioneers. It was fun, it was crazy, big decisions to leave the unit. It was all we had, our everything. I remember SOP, we bought a caravan and put all the harnesses and gear into it and used to pull the caravan up the Wicklow mountains. 😃 God knows, we pushed more than we drove. 😃Do you remember, management development, (the academic was done by a guy called John Butler Century Management) and we convinced him to let us take them out of the classroom into the "hills" 😇🤪. We used to blindfold two senior C level managers, tie them together and have them scrambling around boulders as big as houses in the pissing rain to teach them "confidence building" and "trust your buddy". 😃😃. We really tried to figure it out, a thousand frustrations at a time and we failed. That said, best days of my life and it prepared me to appreciate that perhaps we didn't fail at all, nothing ever changes, you have to figure it out, get stuck in, you push more time that you drive. I don't think we fully understood it at the time but the value systems we were exposed to "back in the day" in the unit, the guys we were privileged to work beside and their attitude, the work ethic, their integrity, they were the building blocks that have stood the test of time and taken us to where we all are today. So glad you came out the other side intact, so much respect for your honesty, respect for your service to your country, so glad to see you strong, happy and with family. God bless you always. Terry
Two legends
Thats exactly the kind of response I would have expected from you Terry, humble and yet honest. You trained me well Terry, and had a quality I aspired to thought my 30years of service. When I qualified on my Sniper course, I can assure you that it was your attitude to "failure is not an option" that got me through. I ended up instructing on 2 Sniper courses later with Danny C who was another inspiration to me, both of you from the same Unit in SJC. Kevin I have followed your story here with amazement , what a fantastic career, your so lucky to have had those opportunities and had the courage to grasp them. Continued success with this channel and Fieldcraft.
Kind regards
Gerry Fitzgerald ( Retired 12th Inf Bn Clonmel)
@@gerardfitzgerald4123 it has always been my great privilege to know how much you care about all you served with Gabby. You were and remain an inspiration to all, your guys, old sweats. It makes no difference. I tell you only the truth. We all know you have our back ⭐

You were my squad leader for a time. I can verify this man’s claim. Still in and I still repeat some of his lessons to young Soldiers today.
I don't have the resume that you do, but I am a veteran. I very much appreciate the content you put out
I was hoping you would start doing podcasts and these are awesome. Thank you for sharing your stories and knowledge with us.
Apparently, there was an alleged sexual assault on a male officer last year that led to a ban on alcohol during deployment by Unifil for Irish troops. A similar prohibition has been in force for other overseas deployments, like the Golan Heights in Syria, due to local sensitivities around alcohol The informal bar in the mess hall for off-duty troops has since been stopped
I became friends with some of your guys in Mogadishu, had a great time thanks. Had some good times alcohol fuelled. I was the UN deminer based up in the embassy compound. Regards to all.
Kevin, I would like to "attack" you with Thank you so very much. I really appreciate your time, perspectives, experiences and knowledge that you've been sharing with us. Thank you for all that you've done and are continuing to do.
Sir, appreciate your stories and lessons. I am also a US Army vet, but nothing to your caliber or experiences. My trips to Iraq were nothing like yours. I heard you on the cleared hot podcast, and immediately identified you as a strong leader. My question you is simple, how have you sustained such commitment and discipline to yourself and your craft? Also, in your podcast, any chance to see photos or videos or your time in the Irish military or in Somalia?
Man, your honesty, candor and humility are very much appreciated by this observer. Love your channel. A history lesson with tactics and tech stirred into the pot. Good stuff.
Hi Kevin,
I am an ex member. I really appreciate your Lebanon experience. It all came back to me stuff I had completely forgot. Your coments on the 3 meses is so real the class structure etc. Love your podcast
Great hearing your Story Kevin! This Wexford man has a similar but mirror opposite story emigrating to the States. Other than shooting rabbits with a 22 back in Ireland, I never had any firearms experience till I started getting training here in Alaska. One of the instructors here asked me if I knew of you, he said “You must know Kevin Owns, he talk’s funny like you”! Lol. You’ve a good following up here with some good folks. If you ever find yourself on the Alaskan Kenai Peninsula, I’d love the opportunity to chat and show you around.
Keep up the good work brother!
Great stuff Kevin, looking forward to seeing your chat with Terry. We were on the same selection course.
I'm very proud to have a you representing ireland 🇮🇪, my grandfather was an Irish soldier, i never met him, he went to Congo, and got back, he died young so i never had the privilege off meeting him, he wasn't very nice and cuddle to his sons, my uncle's but his daughters one being my mom adored him.
The alcohol issue was refreshing to hear. I see it in myself as well as others. I'm writing this at 630am after drinking Guinness last night! It's definitely something I need to get on top of
Love your show. Your right! No need for trash on here. Need to bring Sledge on. That guy will never retire😂 🇨🇮🇺🇸
Thanks for your honesty Kevin!!Your my hero
Hi Kevin, I’m also an Irishman living in Dublin, and you are absolutely right about the healthcare system. It sucks (however there are a few good things about it).
Most people I know have private healthcare, VHI, and even that can be subpar at the best of times.
Love the podcast, keep it up. I’d love to do some kind of one off fieldcraft event in Dublin, if you’re ever around. Regardless, thanks for the great content.
You sir, are the real deal. Please keep doing your thing.
I can’t wait to hear more about Somalia! I have never been so captivated listening to a podcast than when you spoke about Somalia on another podcast.
Hey Kevin, I came across one of your episodes by chance and was thoroughly engrossed and entertained. I say there is no better way to spend an hour on line than with you and your guests. Thanks.
Yep, when the healthcare is "free" (just because its not itemized on your paycheck doesn't mean you're not paying for it) the quality goes down. Wait times go up, nurses and doctors get paid less and the research is almost non- existent. When there is a waiting list for essential surgeries like heart bypass, there is a problem. That's why so many people now opt for private health insurance because the NHS can't support the demand.
Kevin, thank you for taking the time to recount the details of this living history. Too often we only hear a sterilized version of events from a bureaucrat with zero experience and a politically motivated agenda. Please keep them coming. Yasou!
I can listen endlessly!
Let me just say that your five part series on ballistics is just outstanding and you give it away for free - thank you and I look forward to every episode
Kevin don't worry about the trolls, Its a sign of success!! Keep doing what you are doing, the silent majority greatly appreciates it!!!
I really enjoy your podcast. You have both great information and I appreciate the straight forward way of relaying info. 👍🏻🇺🇸
Kevin, people suck !!! I am appreciative of you and your wisdom. De oppresso libre !!
Thank you Mr Owens, I appreciate your skill set, cultural heritage and candor. I'm a retired fireman and enjoy Training with your company. Look forward to an opportunity to take one of YOUR classes in Utah. Un fortunately I live in California. Thanks again
I wasn't expecting part 3 so soon. I love watching these when I am back from work and eating dinner. I tend to agree with what you said about the alcohol, at least in respect to my family. My whole family drinks in nearly every social gathering we have, we actually have a sort of a family reunion / meet up once a month were all meet up typically it's in a pub sometimes its each other's houses though. It probably has to do with most of us are construction workers or work in Restuarant Kitchens. It seems to be mostly April the weather is terrible over here never visit Ireland in April; I dread it every year.
Great episode! You’re running your mic a little too hot, have to keep the input gain on the interface down a little more so it doesn’t have that distortion sound.
Yeah I realized after I was done, I’ll be more careful
This is another great one!
Kevin I could listen to your stories all day thank you..
The best employees any bar or restaurant could hire were Irish - clean, cheerful, hard-working, and competent. Until the immigration authorities would come a-calling, that is. Meanwhile, other types of immigrants had the run of the place, peddling drugs ect.
If u invited a guy from when u were in the Irish sf it would be great to hear everything from there point of view especially if it was someone that had a much different idea and thoughts then u like u guys were friends or got alone but would bring different views on how to do or plan what u guys were going out to do so it made discussion that would come to better plans
hey kevin most of us are here just to hear what you have to say. your podcast videos so far have been great!!!
Story time with Uncle Kevin!! The quality and interest levels are very excellent and consistent! Keep ‘em coming!! And thank you!!!
😂😂😂😂 the Wing making the Compound bigger … that’s deadly
Hey Kevin, love the podcast so far - real quick constructive feedback; the audio in this episode was a bit raspy compared to episode #2. And then the tablet on the left side (viewer) seems be throwing off the focus of the camera because it is in the foreground. Really enjoying the podcast, please continue diligently.
I’m not a professional on firearms but I put you in my top 5 of people I love to learn from.
Kevin l'm delighted you put this on the podcast platform. Listening here in Limerick in a factory 🏭. Greatly enjoyed the first 2.
I saw your resilience video with Mike Glover and immediately wanted to hear more, so I went looking and found this podcast- fantastic work so far! Have you ever thought of yourself or considered that you're essentially a modern revival of the Wild Geese? I served with a lot of other Irish descendants in the Army, and we definitely liked to think of ourselves as inheriting the tradition of our forebears who fled Ireland and took up arms for countries around the world. Curious to get a glimpse of your viewpoint.
Another great episode. I could listen to these stories all day long! Thanks for sharing them with us.
New listener to your podcast but heard your interview on Mike Ritland’s podcast. Excellent and informative content. Only critique is I wish the episodes were longer.
Love your opening statement. I’m the same in telling it like it is. Truth is always quicker. Love your content and your insight into stuff. Keep it up
Thanks for sharing Kevin, love the content.
I am a friendly drinker, less likely to fight after a couple of drinks.
Kev I love you man your a legacy ✌ and love from Ireland 🇮🇪 man
Absolutely loved this episode. Phenomenal story teller.
Kevin. Thank you for what you have done for this country. I'm really enjoying your podcast format. Love the stories and knowledge you are willing to share. God bless!
Legit just finding out you have a channel! Algorithm for the win this time! Looking forward to more!
I'm here to learn. Thank you very much for the effort and knowledge.
No drinking in leb since last year due to a very sensitive incident 😉🤫🤭😏 Kev I'm sure u heard about it through contacts. You right about people wont travel due to that every mission hasnt been full strength since then,so the top heads considering bringing back the drinking 😄😄😄

Great story time with a good man. Thanks Kevin!
Love it brother! Keep up the great work.
as a cad gwot vet with polish background, 100% the same with booze, maybe we got more small man syndrome than we think we do haha, how do you feel about cannabis? I hear mike likes the greens haha
thank you so much for sharing your experiences Kevin
Really enjoying your story. What were the rules of engagement if you ran into trouble in Mogadishu?
Excited about the next segment of your time spent in Somolia, heard a taste of it on the Mike Drop podcast a couple years ago. So very ready for the next podcast
Great stuff
Incredible I can’t wait to hear the next chapter
Great work brother love your podcasts while I drive for work trying to get everyone their packages before Christmas! God bless everyone be safe yall shoot straight!
I really enjoy all your content and hope to take a training course with you some day. Much respect, thank you for your service.
Infantry weather , its not for everyone.
Loved the open!
Loving these podcasts Kevin! Super stoked to hear you’re a functional fitness advocate as well.

Love watching these on my way to work and at home, you're awesome man!
This is quality content kevin thank you for sharing your story
Thanks for doing these.
Damn you have some really good content, can't wait for the next.
Was there any animosity between the SAS guys and you simply because you were Irish?
I enjoy listening to the tales of the old SF guys who laid the way for the current generation of operators.
Really digging the podcast!
great stuff as always
you really should try writing a book
This is really interesting podcast. Thank you for the production. The information was detailed and very eye-opening and sheds a lot of light. If one was starting a career in military, this podcast would provide quite a bit of insight for the astute and curious. You really can pick up a lot of tangential points if you pay attention with this podcast. I don't know if that was intentional but if you listen carefully, there's a whole lot of valuable information, especially valuable I would think for somebody who is just starting out a career or going into a career in the military. I know this is a long comment but I felt it important to give credit here. My brother is spent most of his adult life in US Army SF and I can remember there was things you didn't understand till later that would have been beneficial to know earlier and he very nearly just got out at one point because lack of understanding of how things worked. So thanks again, sorry about the long message here but can't say enough man great job, and very interesting personal stories. May not be everybody's cup of tea but knowledge matters. Also, really appreciate your Frank way of speaking. Something lost to most these days.
Here’s a question for you Kev …..when’s the next episode coming out !!!!!???
I trained as an electrician with electrical rewinds in limerick, i qualified iin 2000, got a job with hnf electrical, they got the contract in the currogh camp in kildare ,i spent 2days working on a massive mains switch, trying to connect a bigger modern copper cable where a smaller one was, the beautiful thing was the i was distracted, i walked up and down the corridor drooling and looking into the prison cells admiring all the beautiful rifles, hundreds off Enfield no4s and FNFAL and even 50 call brownings , they Enfields looked like they had never been fired, happy day's, then their was a shift change and a new officer came on, warr broke out, he was sharper, looked at the logbooks and went apeshit, this was a time when the ira weren't gon yet, I'm form limerick and my second name is Quinlivan, and there i am surrounded by the most beautiful weapons of all time lol😅, the officer made a phone call to my local garda Sargent,,thank fuck the gard was my dad's friend.. I forgot to explain about my name, basically Nessan Quinlivan was from limerick also, no relation, but very much IRA ,himself and Piers Mcaully escaped frome Brighton prison a few years earlier and technically we still at large, macully was dangerous. Straight this is I wound up married to the most beautiful woman from East Belfast, we have a boy JD and a girl Alex together, unfortunately the wife left but I've no regrets I love my kids more than anything else in the world, that's what would make me run into a barrage of lead
Sorry about my terrible spelling, I'm dislex, but for some strange reason I can remember everything about rifle dimensions and materials, the einfelds almost looked white obviously because the wood was beech and not walnut, my favourite battle rifle is fn though, I often wonder if it had a slightly softer round would it kick the m16 into touch lol, stil love the bang of the 7.62×51 though 😉
Loving these Kevin cheers, can't wait to hear more about Somalia. Please go into as much detail as possible! Aye try not to skip over stuff like, no rush on these mate we are all keen to hear the juicy deets!
Drinking these days is very frowned on in the Irish DF,most of the times the mess whether it's the men's mess or NCOs mess is normally empty or being used as a coffee shop. Even some trips to the Lebanon have been dry trips. No booze allowed at all. Been some good change's over the years.
Great to hear
@@kevinowens9636 definitely. And loving the podcast Kevin. It's very captivating and addictive. Absolutely enjoying it.
Looking forward to the Somalia episode.
Good stuff Kevin love the podcast.
Out of the branches the Marines definitely give the least amount of awards. But they definitely still give too many for essentially doing your job.
The audio is not good on this episode, just letting ya know! Thank you for your service.
Love the podcast!
Loving your content.
You’re creating great content !
Can't wait for the next episode!!
Slight audio saturation sir. Otherwise excellent info. And Instagram is… well…. Instagram. Lots of Instagram room clearance experts. They’re good for a laugh.
The next episode is gonna be fucking epic!
Keep these coming!
Don’t build it up too much, too much pressure
Love the block the ahole negative comments from your channel 👍👍
GET EM MATE!
Block/delete
Hell yeah
Guinea’s makes you strong!
👏👏 ⬅️ This is about as good as it gets on ig and RUclips these days. Ive tried sharing my perspective being conversational perhaps even controversial but it doesn't seem like anybody appreciates a follower. Everyone wants to be a Chief. I remember seeing a placard in our barracks "Before you can be a good leader you first must be a good follower." I strive to the the follower that I would want to have one day. I was sorry to see the video about optics recitals get taken down.
Didn't see you "trying to find yourself," much less finding your wife while doing so.
Also, good stuff on drinking. I make enough bad decisions sober so I can't touch the stuff.
cannot wait to hear about MN err I mean Somalia.
Not able to like?
