hey nathan, i'm a young trans dude (16 in march) living in adelaide and seeing you put out these videos is really helpful. it's so hard to find information about transitioning in australia, or anything trans-related here in general so it's just really good to know there are guys like myself. thank you
jackson j. So true. I couldnt find much at all on transitioning in australia so i thought id fill the gap and take out some of the guess work 😊 no worries fam 🤙🏻
Thank you so much for this - I'm a trans guy living in Melbourne and it's incredibly difficult to find any information, so your videos are incredibly helpful.
I've read that in Australia- Persistent, well-documented gender dysphoria; Capacity to make a fully informed decision and to consent for treatment; Age of majority in a given country; If significant medical or mental health concerns are present, they must be well controlled. 12 continuous months of hormone therapy as appropriate te to the patient’s gender goals (unless hormones are not clinically indicated for the individual). The aim of hormone therapy prior to gonadectomy is primarily to introduce a period of reversible estrogen or testosterone suppression before the patient undergoes irreversible surgical intervention. (btw I'm trans for 6-7 years now)
thanks! I'm just starting the process of medically transitioning and this was really helpful :) two years after this video was posted there's still barely any information on transitioning in aus.
Hi Nathan, I'm a MtF and I live in Melbourne. Just out of curiosity, I have been referred to the Monash Gender Clinic, but I'm thinking I might pay to see one of the psychiatrists. Is this the same clinic you went too? I have my own personal psychiatrist, but she doesn't by the looks of it specialise in gender. :( I suffer from anxiety and always think of the worst outcomes for myself. I'm worried they are going to refuse me. Thanks for the video. I hope your journey is turning out as you hoped. xox
Ryan Banik ive been going to monash yea. Theyre really nice and it lead to me being able to go on hormones so its a good option in my opinion 👍🏻 im sure they would be able to help you with transitioning 😊 thank you 😊
@@nathan_cooper47 thanks. I thought it was the case that it's out of pocket in Australia. This confirms that, unfortunately. Good luck getting everything you need.
AFAB. Im a bit new to this stuff and it's really difficult to find accurate and updated information in Australia. Do trans people need to be diagnosed with gender dysphoria to undergo surgery? I don't THINK I have gender dysphoria but I definitely want to be rid of my female biological parts but I'm a bit unsure if I won't be allowed because I don't have or have verrry low gender dysphoria.
I think it would depend on what state you are in and i dont think its necessarily an assessment for gender dysphoria. Like to get on hrt i got an assessment specifically for that and now im getting an assessment specifically for top surgery. As long as you get assessed that you definitely want surgery (and usually a doctors referral but thats the easy part) you in theory should be okay to get it!
Certain states in Aus allow people to wear the uniform and use the toilet of whatever gender they identify with; if your school isnt covered by that then start with a letter from your parent to the principal or even get other classmates to sign a petition!
I'm a bit late to this, but it is possible to get top surgery covered completely by medicare (at least in Sydney) the only out of pocket cost I needed to pay was the post-surgery binder, about $250. If anyone wants deets leme know
Hey Sam, I went to a Dr Steve Merten near martin place. You will need to pay for that appt (partly covered by medicare) and at the appt you discuss everything, about the surgery (what technique he thinks is best) and ask him about the deets for all the options, ie public and private. I went public, so you go on the waitlist and they call you with an appt date, it was 11 months from my appt to surgery and apaz thats on the longer side of things. Dr Merten will oversee the surgery, but the registra on duty that day will do the surgery, you just pay for the binder and some medication for afterwards
You hormones should work if you’ve been on them a year don’t need surgery especially if it’s gonna take longer to take the top surgery so all you’ll need is a letter from treating drs saying you’ve been on hrt for a year :) well at least that’s what I have to do here in Western Australia I can’t get surgery just yet so I’m going down the hrt route as have been advised it counts
Nathan Cooper hey at least your now on the right path and each step is closer to becoming more you. I’m glad you do these updates I’m 29yrs old and have had to figure this out all on my own it’s a struggle as you know here in Australia their isn’t much information around to help so by you giving some information to help others it goes along way
Jamie Chapple yea theres sooo much info for americans on youtube and then for australians theres like nothing 😬 im trying to fill that gap, hopefully it does help someone
In vic you can change your gender on your birth certificate after top surgery. Hormones doesn’t cut it. @nathan you’ll probably be going through Andy Ives for surgery correct? He’s really good and will sign the forms required for you to change your birth certificate :)

It still depends on the state. Victoria changed their laws just last year (previously required surgery) so its all g now

Once you got a referral to the endocrinologist, how much time did it take and how many appointments before you got the prescription for T?
