This week we're getting down on some quick modern updates for a classic muscle car. Our friend brought over his 1968 Mustang that needed some love to make it more enjoyable on the street, so we decided to hook him up with an EPA steering system and a Holley Sniper EFI conversion. With a 351 Windsor under the hood, this pony car was making a decent amount of power but trying to maneuver it with the manual steering took a lot of the fun out of whipping it around town. So we got to work modifying his Mustang to work with the new EPAS system. With the electric power assist steering system attached to the column, we can switch lanes and make turns without feeling like we're getting a full upper body workout. The EPAS was so quiet and effective that we're definitely considering swapping this system in for the noisy hydraulic system that's in our Tesla swapped square body. With the car more enjoyable to drive, it only made sense to make it more reliable as well. So we yanked out the old dinosaur of a carburetor to add an EFI system under the hood. We were able to use most of his dash-6 performance fuel lines he already had routed through the car to link in all the main components from the Holley master kit. The Sniper definitely woke the car up a bit, giving it a much easier cold start and a more responsive throttle!

You can do the steering swap for about $300 in parts from a 2005-2010 Prius. Did mine in 2018.
That mustang sounds awesome, like it’s got alien technology in it😍
Full Electric EPAS works great for a daily driver. I installed a epas from a Prius in my 64 Impala and it's been great so far
Definitely made a world of difference in the mustang. Now to try it on the EV Truck!
Did u do a video on it
@@andre49ers just some test clips, no full install
Usually I give props to the fabricators in my comments. Today I want to tip my hat to the editor. Keep up the good work!👍
Thanks so much for the support! We're glad you like the content!
Thank you guys for the Ford in a Ford Mustang project. 😎
Nice Mustang. And 68 is the best year ever.... 😁
Watching this channel is nuts, I love it.
Glad you enjoy it!
I've heard good things about both of those. Started right up with it.
Dude that car is super super awesome
Thank you!!!
Great video. I like the details you put in, the watching you weld and tighten every screw part you skipped, and the driving sequence made me laugh. I like both topics...EPAS and retrofit EFI.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks for the new video guys! This is my favorite custom car site by far.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoy it!
Mikey, thanks for the content. Appreciate your videos and your builds.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
Mikey and the boys killing it again, keep the content coming please, makes my Wednesday lunch so much better.
So glad we can help you through the week! Thanks for the support!
Killer Mustang!
Nice job as usual. Always look forward to watching your problem solving skills in action.
Thanks so much!
I have both of those systems on my 65 mustang. The EPAS is makes it a completely different car to drive and the sniper EFI runs flawlessly.
It really makes it a lot more fun to whip around town!
That fitting sticking out of the bottom of the tank looks like an accident waiting to happen.
exactly. so many comments about all the great work & i stopped watching the vid after seeing that fitting like that
this video is so timely because I've been doing tons of sniper conversion research. thanks guys!
Glad to help!
Freaking awesome
Thanks!
'built 351 Windsler' lol
Both of those upgrades seem to make a big difference!
The sniper definitely made it more responsive and the steering made that power manageable now!
Love that car!
That was awesome absolutely love the Stang
We have a 69 that we did a full exhaust for in another playlist if you need more mustang action!
great work as always. criminally underrated channel
Much appreciated! Thanks for all the support!
Surprised to see you guys use that Airtex pump when the Holley OE pump module exists. As someone that deals with Snipers day in and day out, those Airtex pumps make better paper weights than fuel pumps. The OE module is so much better. Solid work either way though. Always look forward to your new episodes
You guys just did everything i wanna do to my new f100 i just got😂😂
Awesome
Beauty aye Clark?!
Great video guys, I enjoyed it. Less next level fabrication than usual but interesting nonetheless. What an awesome car!
It's a little different than what we normally do, but we're glad you still enjoyed it!
Beautiful car. I Always wanted to find a 1st gen mustang for my mom. It's one of the cars I can remember her saying she's always wanted.
They definitely have one of the nicest body styles of all the mustangs!
@@SalvagetoSavage yeah I think so too
Nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
new sub. sweet looking mustang. sniper on my turbo 302 now and love it. doing a 408w stroker now that'll get a holley hi ram and haltech nexus r3 most likely. I'll actually be doing away with my EPAS for the swap due to the serpentine setup i purchased. i built mine from a nissan versa motor and a gm universal column off ebay for under $500 though..
Love the color on that car. Very clean. My carb'd foxbody struggles a lot with vapor lock, there's probably a Sniper in its future...
We love these snipers! Super simple to install and set up!
If someone is up for a diy fabrications e steering can use an 07 Prius e pump. Picked one up at wrecking yard for $75 full
Day of cutting measuring and welding you can have power steering that works just like this. Currently running on my jz mustang and works great
ooo thanks for the tip!
That electric power steering is awesome! You should definitely use it on the c10.
We definitely need one in there!
Man that thing sounds healthy!
It sure does!
Great timing as I'm shopping for EPAS for my project. Too bad you guys didn't have a discount code. 😀
We'll talk to more vendors next time about getting discount codes for y'all!
@@SalvagetoSavage that would be cool. I'm going to try a Prius EPAS first then come back to this if that isn't good enough.
Love it
Thank you!
One of those electric steering systems is on my to get list. I wish they would have a system where you add wheel speed sensors and automatically adjust the sensitivity as needed. Keep up the great content, you guys might need a bigger shop for all your projects.
We definitely have another one on the list for the EV truck! Thanks for all the support, hopefully our shop will grow in size along with the channel!
They do. Multiple styles actually. Wheel speed sensor style, hall effect style and GPS style
I like the part where he saw that civic creeping and down shifted and was gone!! Ok maybe it wasn’t a downshift, but you get it.
That was Kyle and Khalel trying to get a rolling shot of the car! lol
good job man ;-)
Thanks!
I used a Chevy equinox epas motor with Bronson controller on my ranger build and one day it freaked out and pulled/locked left. I couldn’t even muscle it straight. Luckily I was on a back road. I’m swapping to normal ol hydro now. Scared me good
That's enough of a scare to need to change out your underwear! lol glad you made it out safe though!
👍👍
I hope it meets expectations, would love to see it implemented on the EV truck!!!! ❤️🤟
It would definitely be a whole lot quieter than what we got going on right now!
He said D shaft.. lol
hi guys love the video did you have to leave the heater blower out when electric steering was fitted or does it fit back in.
Love these videos! Leave it to you guys to give me more ideas on things I should buy. Have y’all announced the sniper efi giveaway winner yet?
Yes! We announced it back at the beginning of the month on our instagram!
that steering would be nice on a gen 1 econoline van!!
They make these EPAS systems for a whole ton of different vehicles!
No detail on how they connected the steering column shaft to the the epas. That would have been nice...
My son is a cop and has an Explorer as his vehicle. Hopefully, this brand of power steering is better than Ford’s version, which is a huge PITA!!
Where was the kit for the epass power steering aquired from? Ive been using volvo pumps for a while and im on my 3rd pump so looking at future options. Great job as usual guys.
Shoot us a message on IG and we can help you out!
Allways critical Classe A stuff 🎩🤌🏽
Thank you!
Does the Electric Power Steering save horse power?? Great looking build. We were selected 1/50 to join this years Barrett-Jackson Road Tour. Starts in Parker Colorado, we are going to Dave Kindig’s shop, Yellowstone National Park $3200 pays for all of our Lodging and most of our meals. Epic trip. My BelAir is in paint right now.
Maybe saves enough horsepower you could measure it on a dyno, but not enough that you could feel it while driving.
It also saves weight and all those hydraulic PS lines that are all over the place on the 70 and earlier mustangs.
Tradeoff is it can be easier to diagnose and repair the old hydraulic setup. Its obvious when something is leaking. And you can buy complete pumps and slave cylinders, rebuilt units, or rebuild kits to do it yourself. With the electric steering, you get none of that. When it isn't working, you get to stare at a pile of electronics with your multimeter to try and tell what's broken. And if something needs fixed, good luck finding spare parts for it at autozone or anywhere else.
That's awesome! Congrats! Like the other response said, it won't be any real noticeable gain but it would definitely make it more enjoyable to handle whatever power you are putting down!
@@SalvagetoSavage thanks this will be an Epic trip and fun to boot. You should make application the next Barrett-Jackson Road Tour is in New England. You might stop buy and let us buy you a glass of Wine??
When you roll in to my town bring tools 2009 charger 5.7 hemi r/t let's go need some Savage!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤙🤙🤙🤙
We definitely need to take a trip out to the islands! Hope you have great day Albert!
@@SalvagetoSavage lmk when you roll in town lmk 🤪
💪👊👋
Did you guys charge the mr2 to this one on the Ev truck? I’m pulling my LS and doing a p100 on my c10 and searching which way to go on power steering conversion?
6:16, "1967 Mustang coupe"
Does the car have an insta? Nice build!
Waiting on road debris to rip that fuel line from the bottom of the fuel tank.
My '66 Stang was manual steering and I never felt any need for power.
I have drove a few manual steering vehicles which were fine. But, I could have used this in my old 70 Ford pickup I used to have. It was a serious workout if not moving.
Is there anymore info on this mustang build? Would like to see the project.
The EPAS is that connected to the original Mustang steering box or does this have a rack and pinion system? If it does what's the setup, please?
Shoot Andrew a message on IG and he can help you out
I got a blow thru carburetor for a 289 With a Paxton nüvi 1200 SL do you think it’s better to try to get the holly sniper EFI it’s for a 1968 coupe?
I would definitely shoot Holley a message on that! I'd hate to give you the wrong info there, but the guys over at Holley are super helpful and should be able to steer you in the right direction!
More information on the electric power steering system you used?
Shoot us a message on IG!
Great video. I've heard good and bad about the HOLLY EFI system. What are your thoughts on their reliability and what skill level is required to install one? Thanks
The biggest thing is good wiring and follow the instructions to a t. I did my install over two weekends. 67 mustang with the sniper controlling timing. I've had it for 2 years and without a single issue. Allot of street driving and a ton of track time with 0 issues 🤘
If you have mechanical knowledge and are good with instructions you should have no problem! We haven't had any issues with the ones we've installed!
When they work, they're great. When they crap out, you're basically shit-outta-luck. Holley doesn't support you repairing it. You have to take the unit off your car, mail it in, and wait 6+ weeks for them to fix it. Last time I had to call holley, hold time was over 90 minutes.
At least with the fitech, which is very similar to the holley, its easier to revert back to your carb if you have to take the EFI off for repairs.
I trust my holly that's been on my 67 cougar for the last 30 years more that holly EFI and I work in a restoration shop.we have EFI cars now and then that come into the shop that are not running right so they are not 100% problem free
A. Why so much rubber hose? Why on fill neck AN to nipple to rubber?
2 things that shoulda just spend the time to do right. that return line dumping at the top of the tank is going to aerate the fuel.. if you didn't want to drop the tank and weld in the bung or bulkhead it properly you should have at least ran a hose inside that fill next to dump the fuel in the bottom of the tank. 2nd, that o2 bung should have been welded. the clamp on bungs are kinda garbage. for a car as nice as this and you having it on a lift already and a tig welder in shop, why not weld in the bung?
How can I put electric power steering on my 66 impala? Part #’s please? Great video thanks
It's an EPAS Performance system. They have fitment you can choose from on their website!
Is this a universal part?
For the most part. It hooks onto the stock column with some modification
Do you think the EPA kits can be installed on a 350Z?
Shouldn't be a problem if there's room for the motor underneath the dash!
The throtl guys did an epas swap on their tesla powered ev converted 350z.
@@4literv6 thanks! I'm going to check it out!
Did that Civic rear-end you guys?
No. That was Khalel in the civic
Mean mustang rolling um brada yeah you ALOHA FROM HONOLULU HAWAII BIG AL MANOA VALLEY AAALLLOOOHHHAAA AWSOME CONTENT 😀 da Savage BRADAS ALOHA
Thanks for the love Albert!!!
why would you not weld a o2 bung in?
It's for if you don't have access to a welder or the skillset to weld it in
"351 Winsler"???
What happened to Donny?
FAWK'n HELL ! I've got a 68 coupe sit'n in my shop get'n a, (SHHH), forged 6.0 turbo lq4 backed by a TKX, explorer 8.8 goin in it ! Git R Dun boizzzzzzz !
That sounds crazy! If you get any photos or videos up on IG, make sure to tag us in it. We'd love to see the progress!
.
What happens if you lose power do you lose steering?
It would essentially just be back to manual steering
That isn't a common issue, however, the system has an internal circuit breaker. If it trips for any reason, the car would simply revert back to manual steering until you stop, turn the key off and restart the car. The system automatically resets itself.
Can I buy this thing
Nope! Not for sale
I don’t mean to sound like a smart-ass, but would it kill you guys to throw fender covers over your customers cars? Seems way easier then a repaint, just saying.
Looks to me like he is at about 10:38. On both sides no less.
@@MyShadowblue you’re right! Better late then never I reckon.
That's not a fuel pump, that's a fuel pull. Car will still have a fuel problem.
two and half months in and still no fuel problem
isn't that a customers car ..... and you're doing burnoutin a customers car?
Yep, with he’s blessing
