When someone close to you dies, it changes everything, including the people around you. I think they were all avoiding grief around one another; it took being confronted with death themselves for them to finally break down and weep together. Perhaps they realized there's not enough time to worry about those sorts of things when life is so short.
In the end, their grandmother's earnest and beautiful effort to memorialize the grandfather is what saves them from the incoming wave. Grieving a person means allowing them to die inside our minds and hearts; so they can be reborn into a new version of themselves, one that we will still carry with us everywhere.
I really enjoyed Grandpa Walrus. I hope the creators are somewhere doing more gorgeous work like this.

I lost my grandfather in January, a week before my birthday and lost my dog on the 5th of march. I loved this animation
