God I just need to get off my butt and film something. Really like how you share and own your mistakes Ryan. Would really like to hear more about the incorporating the Blender into this short.
You guys have inspired me for years. Just last year I finally started making films. My last film I made in two hours. Love the run and gun style. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Keep up the good work!
I love you guys. I love when people just do what they want, regardless of obstacles. People who find a way to make it happen for themselves. Kudos to you and your crew, Ryan!
For me it’s the fact you have produced something so good in only 8hrs, plus told a great story in under 3 mins. Inspiring. 🙏 thank you. These sci fi short films seem to have something of a little extra compared to your other short films not of the same genre. Clearly your favourite?
Great work on this! Ryan, I know you mentioned your dislike of using different locations with Justin, but I had NO IDEA until you mentioned it. I was so focused on the characters that I did not notice the background. If Film Riot made more content like this, I think more and more people would be able to grow as film makers. Again GREAT JOB to EVERYONE involved.
Please do a blender tutorial for the shield and blender vfx in general. Been awhile since I have seen this channel pop up so idk if you already have done a blender tutorial but surprised there isn’t more considering your low budget demographic. Also a critique about the shield, Elysium is one of my favorite movies and how agent Kruger gets blasted back even though he ejected his shield was awesome!
This is awesome and you guys have been a constant source of inspiration for me. I've done a few short films and I've loved all your stuff since even before "Proximity" so cool. Keep up the awesome work you guys!
This is great!! It's nice seeing yall working on similar budgets to the super early stuff, shows that your skills have come so far, talent has grown alongside the budgets
Man! You guys have come such a LOOOOONG way! Fantastic episode...I was planning on just sitting around today...after watching this, I'm grabbing my camera!
Amazing work guys. 😎But I expect nothing less from Film Riot. 👀You guys are always Top Notch even on small projects like this! 👉And thanks for the behind the scenes, always helps the up and coming ones... 💪
First off absolutely brilliant. Next could you guys kindly make a detailed tutorial on the production of the drone and the composting of the 3D drone onto the footage. Also, how did y'all make that one drone travel through the ground? This was seriously smooth Ryan! Brilliant job!
Man! Its time for a feature film. I've been waiting for a feature film from you guys for about 5 years. I started off my filmmaker career watching your channel 10 years ago. Now, I just finished my first feature film.
Is it weird that I like the animatic more? Just seems more visceral, maybe the wider lens and the fast shutter, but also the eye expressions! Anyway such a cool project, thank you for inspiring us!!!
While I love all your videos and appreciate everything you guys are doing, I will say this, I truly hope that you make it as a Director in Hollywood and achieve all your dreams. BUT, as far as Josh is concerned, if he continues this path of acting, he will definitely become one of Hollywood's "A LIST ACTORS"! His presence in front of the camera is absolutely astounding! I can definitely see him filling the big screen with action pack rolls. love you guys!! fan 4ever
This is the Film Riot content I miss so dearly! Great work as always boys! I know you're all working on taking the next big step, but I hope to see more in the future :D
Loved it, loved it, loved it. I would like to know how you were able to make the drone going in the ground and moving, leaving the mark behind! This is such an inspiration, man. Great idea to select the music and based on that getting the inspiration for the script, as a musician I perfectly understand that, cause the music will defo take you to places with ideas and moods… I just did 2 trailers and recently got a screenplay software, to start learning the way you write scripts etc and it’s fascinating. I have a few books that I would love to adapt for a short (or even a feature), but I don’t have the crew, lol (yet), however, your videos and work in general are a humongous motivation for me to keep writing, shooting and repeating. Thanks, Ryan 🙏
I'd be super curious to see how many of the shield shots were tracked. It seems difficult to extrapolate a 3d move from a tiny practical handle. Props to Joey and Ryan, their work is stunning.
Yeah, that would be a great breakdown! I would have built a chroma blue/green X pattern to attach to the handle to allow for easier tracking within frames.
Thanks! The tracking was a bit challenging in some shots, but overall not too bad actually. In most of them I just did a single point track on the handle & animated the depth & rotation by hand. The glass pane shots were more challenging to track actually. I think we'll be going more in depth on the VFX so stay tuned!
It would also be cool to see how you composite a fake shield with a fake explosion and how you make them look like they’re actually interacting together
This was really awesome! I feel like my final would've looked more like your animatic lol but that's me trying to do everything myself, something I have to work on.
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿GREAT JOB!!! Thought this was awesome, from what you guys had going against you! Love the location, so much can be done there! Great directing and cinematography work!!🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿 Grand-slam on the audio, Foley work!! Definitely going to check out the soundtrack you used to put this together!!! The CG work is second too none!! And as always the two subject actors always bring it!!!Really AWESOME JOB!!!! You guys are the BEST!!!!
Amazing work as always it's always a pleasure to see yall come together like "Punished props" making props again. Also is this short part of the sentinel universe lore? It's so cool!
l Loved it!! great work! its inspiring to see the great work you guys deliver and I am amazed you were able to produced it in such a short time.! Thumbs up my friends!!
great work on the film! For the upcoming vfx making film, I'd love to know more about the VFX supervisor's relationship with the director. I'm interested in how much time they needed to setup these vfx shots on set, how they setup tracking markers (if any), and whether they took HDRI / reference photos. Thanks Film Riot!
I don't know if this has been said, BUT, a guest tutorial on the VFX would be amazing. They are seamlessly tied into the storytelling and sometimes Blender tutorials are disconnected from storytelling. Great work!
I watched the film a couple of times before watching the making of, laughed a little that the making of was several times longer than the short film.. I'm generally a continuity person, little differences bother me. After watching the making of and your commentary about the continuity discrepancy, I have to say it bothers me not one bit. An industrial yard, if not maintained will quickly becomes a mangle of rocky and grassy areas and even after watching it critically for the errors, still can't say that I even notice them, attributing them to camera position and lens differences.. good job, enjoyed both the film and the making of
Loved this short So Cool!!! As for vfx tutorial, I would be interested in something especially covering the workflow. How are we setting up the rendering from blender that kind of stuff. Also the moving ground stuff, that was amazing!
I love the micro short! Great Job! The only thing that stood out for me watching it was the design of the drone. It seems to have no way to propel itself forwards. The props the drone has would only be able to give it lift and the drone appears to fly in a straight line with no tilt. I noticed there were however four traditional drone props on the drone in the animatic. I'm wondering if it was for aesthetic reasons they were left out in the final design as it does look pretty kick ass on screen! 😎
I literally just used this EXACT same Musicbed track for my latest edit for joblo's Face Off show (the Nicholson VS Ledger episode)...soooo great minds? 🤷♂🤣 Either way, for a run and gun short done in a day, it turned out like gangbusters! So good!
I love this SO much. The idea of micro shorts need to be done more often by more creatives. My ONLY issue in the story telling is that a sniper is laying in the middle of the field. Why? Was he mid movement when it happened? Did he know Josh was there? Etc. Still amazing work, i love all of this. The talent in the sound really sold this as higher budget than it really was.
Amazing breakdown and explanation. I would like to know more about the lens choices, fov, camera and what cues do you search for in relation to the shot in mind.
Great stuff as always! A bit of topic though but could you take a look at Moon Knight tranistions/fast travels between Marc and Steven, like how to do it, so that they are as impactful as they are. I just think is so smart and well done how they portrayed it.
Please can we see more breakdowns/bts of the 3D/CGI aspects of the movie🙏 Like from the models, texturing, animating, placing them in the real life environment, blending, colour grading, blender/element 3d stuff etc🙏🙏🙏
I was gonna use some French to curse you guys for making such a micro film that left me wanting to keep watching hehehe. I was so into it that all that stuff you have explained about different locations didn't even register to me at all. Just goes to show that when there is a good story or when the film is engaging some of the other technical things won't matter much. And this is what new filmmakers need to understand and Im glad you didn't talk about gear you used coz that don't matter but im sure there will be someone asking about the gear and that will be a shame as they are not getting the whole point. Good on you guys, awesome work on Sentry 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Amazing work guys and girls. Its always amazing to see what one can do with a bit of time and imagination. Could you release a video touching on the 3D VFX (shield, underground drone, etc) that would be amazing as a 3D enthusiat. Thank you
Fantastic work on this short film. The CG drone looks SO COOL!
00:01 Your Kitbashed Gun Prop Looks so Cool 🔥🙌
You are one of my biggest inspirations to become a filmmaker! Thank you for being always there! Love from Mexico 🫶🏻
Love from South Africa
You and your team are such a great inspiration for aspiring filmmakers 💪 Love you all!
I absolutely love these please keep making micro films it’s so inspiring and so fun to watch!!
This is exactly why I love Film Riot, 10 years and counting.
God I just need to get off my butt and film something. Really like how you share and own your mistakes Ryan. Would really like to hear more about the incorporating the Blender into this short.
I would’ve never noticed Justin literally changing spots had you not pointed it out. This thing was absolutely amazing!
The stretch with sunlight was soooo much worth it! Love it!
You guys have inspired me for years. Just last year I finally started making films. My last film I made in two hours. Love the run and gun style. Thanks for the inspiration!!! Keep up the good work!
I was focused on the story and didn't notice the location inconsistencies. Great work team.
The quality is crazy I can't believe it was made in that little time
I love you guys.
Been with these guys before Josh had facial hair and still here! Seeing what they're doing now continuously inspires me to "write.shoot.edit.repeat"
Really badass work. I couldn't catch anything, because was so involved in the world.

This kinda stuff is peak Film Riot for me. An amazing short and amazing BTS. Nothing better. Much love!
ALSO WTF YOU SHOT IN DENTON?! MY HOMETOWN?!
Never in a million years would I have noticed the different shot locations. So well done
This is great!! It's nice seeing yall working on similar budgets to the super early stuff, shows that your skills have come so far, talent has grown alongside the budgets
all those location shifts where unnoticeable you did a great job
You guys have changed us indie film makers lives. Thank you for the years of hard work
Was waiting already
Love you guys
Have learned a lot from you all
Amazing! Ya'll should crank out these shorter shoots more often!
Tbh I didn’t notice a single one of the inconsistencies mentioned. Shows that you all know exactly what you need to do to adapt 🙂
I would love a breakdown on creating the ground effect as the drone ran through the ground
The location was killer
Love that energy shield! Maybe a future tutorial??
You guys are great!!!
Yeaah.. Finally you guys are back.. This type of content is what I am following FILM RIOT for, from past 7 years.. You guys rock!!! 🥰😍🤩❤️
These are my favorite types of episodes. Amazing work, guys!
Thanks! So glad you dug it.
Josh is such a underated and talented actor! Loved this one! Great job Guys!
I love this! Thanks Film Riot for being the best.
This is exactly what i needed, some Film Riot insperation. Great work, but I'd love to know more about the cinematography. Thanks!
First off absolutely brilliant. Next could you guys kindly make a detailed tutorial on the production of the drone and the composting of the 3D drone onto the footage.
Also, how did y'all make that one drone travel through the ground?
This was seriously smooth Ryan!
Brilliant job!
All sound was done in post??? omg... I am blown away. Wow.
I love micro films, I feel like it's 90% of what I do. I would definitely love to see more of these!
Man! Its time for a feature film. I've been waiting for a feature film from you guys for about 5 years. I started off my filmmaker career watching your channel 10 years ago. Now, I just finished my first feature film.
I didn't even notice the grass/rock issue. I was connected to the characters and held in suspense. Nice work (as expected).
Amazing work as always, I'd love to see how you guys pulled off the drone going underground shot(s)
You guys have come so far since the Rev3 days. Good stuff.
Is it weird that I like the animatic more? Just seems more visceral, maybe the wider lens and the fast shutter, but also the eye expressions! Anyway such a cool project, thank you for inspiring us!!!

I love the wrist check at the end to tie it all in to your universe. 👍
Great video and great advice. I love your "Just Do It" mindset, it's very freeing.
You guys always amaze me - Great work once again - love the creativity.
This is the Film Riot content I miss so dearly! Great work as always boys! I know you're all working on taking the next big step, but I hope to see more in the future :D

Got to see Justin work his magic on a movie we worked on back in 2018. A beast!
Love it when the animatic alone has 10x the production value of any of my shorts
That is solid👌
Wow! I have been binge watching your videos since the 2nd of December .
Amazing work as always it's always a pleasure to see yall come together like "Punished props" making props again.
Also is this short part of the sentinel universe lore? It's so cool!
the making of is gold guys, the vfx seem to be real, i also liked the way you bend thangs so the prod can enter in the mold of the post
l Loved it!! great work! its inspiring to see the great work you guys deliver and I am amazed you were able to produced it in such a short time.! Thumbs up my friends!!
Aerial shot, color grading, and vfx for sure! 🔥
I feel seen! Excellent work as usual, gang. Love it!!!
Good job! Fixing to do a fan made film ourselves here in Houston. Keep up the knowledge
Always love ur work! Very dedicated and beautiful.
Please please please do the underground drone as a tutorial! That is exactly what I've been looking for!

Loved this short So Cool!!!

you have helped me so much about directing and now I can achieve my dream to one day be a Director
Great episode!!! Keep it up, I love seeing this type of content from you
That cheek shot was amazing!
PLEASEEEEE Do a tutorial of the thing going underground!! Like tremors!!!

Can you do a tutorial on the Force field shield?
Bravo you folks are amazing .

Love this channel, I am very happy I subscribed 7yrs ago 😊😊😊
While many people obsess over lenses, nothing beats a crew of friends eager to make something.
I love Behind the scenes!
This is really cool, the short was amazing!~
I think I would have added a rifle being cooked to get the sniper to look over his shoulder but other than that it's a great dreamtic suspensful short
What a team!!
If you guys can show how you did the underground drone shot. That was the iceing on cake for me
Why does Josh Check his wrist? Does he have a countdown like in Ballistic?👀 love this video
😎
This is Ingenious!
