I looved the Winternight trilogy, I'm also hyped to read The Warm Hands of Ghosts at some point! Also, you are right, second books are quite often superior, 'middle book syndrome' is propaganda
What to stay away from. Well I'm not one for complaining much, but I had the most terrible read with Five Broken Blades. I bought it without much research at a train station although I knew Broken Binding was doing an edition, so I was kind of depending on their good taste. Now in their defense, it is probably a great insta-love romantasy book that lots of people love, but it is very much not what it says in the blurb and it is extremely formulaeic. Even the chapters seem to follow a very similar structure for each of the perspectives (minor plot progression - pining for the other person/lamenting their plight or past - minor plot progression). I'm currently having a lot of fun reading Howls moving castle and then going on to the sequels.
Oh that's super rough, sorry to hear that! But yeah, I keep seeing that everywhere in Canada but they only sell a special edition with sprayed edges which is like $40 dollars or something which is crazyyyyyy for a new release! But ouuu, I've really wanted to read Howls Moving Castle, using this as the excuse to add it to my Wishlist!

@@mojopie 100%! 2nd books are the chance for authors to expand and really attack their ideas and worlds without having to introduce everything
