- Cassadaga is a small town in Florida that’s just like any other bedroom community-except that it’s filled with psychics. Stroll down its streets and you’ll bump into clairvoyants, mediums, and past-life shamans. But it’s not all crystal balls and tarot cards - in fact, many of the psychics here don’t use those materials at all.
Established in 1894, Cassadaga was one of many camps that sprang up around the U.S. during the Spiritualist movement. It’s said that the town is built around a natural energy vortex, which might explain why people are drawn here. Today, many of its residents still identify as Spiritualists and believe communing with the dead through mediumship is proof of life continuing on after our bodies die.
It’s no wonder Cassadaga has garnered a reputation for being a freaky place. But is it all it’s cracked up to be? In this episode of FRINGES, VICE’s Zach Shucklin visits the “Psychic Capital of the World” to investigate.

I went there about 20 years ago on Halloween with some friends and the people there told us to leave the town. We just wanted a psychic reading. We were young goths, so maybe they thought we wanted to start some trouble. They literally followed our car to make sure we left. The town is very small. It was pretty weird to be kicked out of a town.

My girlfriend loves spiritualism. I used to like it too until it started affecting our relationship. Now if we’re arguing and she hears a reader say something like “your partner is being secretive” she will believe it 100% and then we will argue about something that never happened.
Hell no lol. You can't be living your life like that, if this relationship is like 2 years or under, i say make an ultimatum, this whole things done or your gone, OR, if you dont think thats a good idea, tell her hoiw much it ius hurting you at a time when you arent mad, tell her you need to talk, etc. OR just hightail it, that shits a bad sign.

It's the devils play ground. Regardless if a person believes or not. Most people scoff at Christianity. But it's the only true way.
If your girlfriend is into spiritualism, she should learn how to communicate with her own spirit guides rather than rely on readings given by other people.
Spirituality is about believing in God and giving back to people - being of service to others. Period. It’s not about communicating with spirits. If you _do_ have spirit guides you communicate with, they are there to help you walk your spiritual path and live your soul’s purpose. Your girlfriend sounds like she doesn’t trust you, so help her walk her spiritual path.
A lot of people get caught up in spiritualism because expanding your reality can be a form of escapism. But I got news for you: if God calls on you and you decide to go through self-actualization, be prepared for the greatest and harshest reality check of your life. You only receive psychic gifts because you’re meant to do something with them.
True psychic gifts aren’t given to you so you can escape your reality by constantly questioning it. Psychic gifts are given to you so you can *wake up* to the actual reality that IS. And the reality is you’re a nightmare (lol we all are) and you have a lot of inner soul work to do before you can help anyone else.
This is just my practical advice but if your girlfriend is calling psychics all the time it probably means she’s still searching for something or choosing not to focus and work on herself. Maybe she should focus more on her career goals? Or maybe she needs to go through her own spiritual awakening.

The guy who went there from Vice was tall, has light eyes and is about the age of a man whose father or more likely grandfather would have transitioned already. A cold reading can be a guess based on age, looks, race and the fact that most men were drafted into the military.
True. But what matters is if the message from the person resonates with you or not. Some charlatans in this field DO play cold reading guessing games. Seems like the young woman here is the genuine deal. Her sincerity floors me.

Even when it comes down to the host - she said an "older gentleman has followed you arouund - he passed away from somehting with the heart"
1 in every 5 deaths IS heart disease. the odds that the young adult host knew someone who passed away from this were pretty high - could be a brother, a father, a friend, an uncle - its about casting a wide net with vauge claims.
They then see how the person reacts by leading the conversation with whatever seems to get the most reaction from the person having this "psychic reading" done to them.

Went there on the one year anniversary of my mom's death last year. There were a lot of sketchy/racist glares. In one of the shops the cashier allowed people to get in front of me by calling them over even when they were behind me. Overall, unfriendly and unwelcoming people. But the fairy park was nice. I left some trinkets for my mom, because it was her dying wish to travel there, and she never got to. I'm kind of glad she didn't because of how poorly my sister and I were treated.

To be honest, I see it similar to religion like Christianity in its ability to help people cope with death. Like in Christianity you know your dead loved ones are safe in heaven and in this spiritualism you know your dead loved ones are with you spiritually. If it helps people and isn't draining their bank account then it's a net positive.

If you're a skilled interrogator with a talent for reading nonverbal & vocal cues, you could probably make a decent living as a psychic. Also, being a people person doesn't hurt.

Ah, I love the cold reading the “psychics” did in that auditorium with those high probability guesses like “some person in an apron in the kitchen” or “Christmas”. The sunflower guess was also expected since it is a pretty well known flower with the likes of Van Gogh making pretty impressionist paintings of them in his art.

My son and I saw something similar in Central FL on a deserted country road at dusk. It was a very strange experience. No drugs involved.

The album sounds very country but a lot of the songs have to do with mysticism. So funny. I live 20 minutes outside of Cassadaga. My boyfriend and I decided to go check it out and have a drink at the hotel in the Sinatra. We decided to go check it out randomly one Saturday night because of all the lore behind it. Interesting history, but very small. The folks were very nice. Didn’t get a reading or anything. This was two months ago. So funny there’s this video.

I spent the night in the Cassadega Inn, and I didn't see the ghost I even stayed close to the haunted room.
Every little town in Florida has some kind of attraction or something these days.
So, the medium's take on the host's spirit (later identified with his dad): over six feet or just "tall": yes (sort of?); blue eyes: no (green); age is described variously as older, in his 60s, then 65: no (too vague and one year off actual death age); his presence is described as protective/paternal: no (actual father was absent, toxic). You can see how she goes from vague generalizations that could apply to people someone his age might know to downright editing answers after the mother presents new information, then using that "black rainbow" trick: he looked strong but was also caring (these kinds of readings can apply to anyone because they cover contradictory traits).

I've seen "ghosts" all my life so i used to love this type of content. One night, I was at a friends house and saw a "ghost" in her kitchen (it was some older man wearing a cowboy hat and leaning back against the counter.) As I was describing it to her, she got so exciting, I only had to ask two questions:
1. Did she know a man who wore cb hats?
2. Did this man like to hang out in the kitchen?
Immediately, she believed it was her dad's spirit. Based on her expressions, I knew exactly what leading questions to ask so she could convince herself it was true. Baiting her like that felt so manipulative and shameful, especially after she started crying and hugged me.
Now, I dont believe in ghosts/psychics anymore, but spiritualism is still a fun concept.

So u made it up? I would see shadow figures growing up but unlike you I wouldn’t see any details. Just a tall black silhouette that would fade away. One day when I was 20 I worked at a nursing home and decided to take a nap in the office. When I awoke I had sleep paralysis and I saw the Shawdow figures again but this one was tall and had a trench coat and long top hat. He stared at me and slowly faded away until I could feel my body again. And that was the last time I seen “spirits”
Your story is confusing. You said that you saw a ghost in the kitchen, and then went on to manipulate her. If you were seeing ghosts so often then why wouldn't you believe in them? I'm confused.

Don't fall on their deception. Yes they can do so by familiar spirits (spirits that are familiar with you and your families activities). They do so to catch your attention and to have your soul under their control.

To those dismayed by the lack of depth in the message work, there is, first, an admonition among leaders to only give a greeting, not a reading. This can be for the privacy of the one getting the message, called the sitter. It can also be a time consideration because there's often a crowd. Third, mediums come in all ranges of focus, ability, and skill. One might be able to get exquisite details, while another, not so much.
This is hysterical. I don't know if this happened to anybody else or if it's just me watching this video, but the Red Bull psychic commercial just came on while I'm watching this, haha😂

I live really close by, I grew up going there all the time. Everyones grandma even in the towns outside of there are oddly witchy, psychic, even if they don't consider themselves to be we all had a weird great aunt who called them before she saw them and it would freak the family out. I would say most people grow up skeptics but this part of Florida between Cassadega, Blue Springs, and Deleon springs has just weird energy especially at night. That most locals have some sort of belief In the supernatural because we all have had some weird freaky experience growing up in this area. I love it there, even though I'm not always the biggest believer I can't deny any of my weird experiences in the cemetery. I've never paid for any of the special tours or sessions there it has always been just me walking around town on my own. If you go to the cemetery bring kids toys you'll know which one to give it to when you see it. I think since this area is dense in aquifers under our feet, and there is so much kinetic energy going on underneath us & above during storm season. Things just feel more alive in this area, I don't buy into all the people but I buy into the land being extra active. The original native people the mayaca's I believe considered the area around blue springs very spiritually important, the boil there is a very spiritual experience in its beauty alone I would say. I'm thankful for growing up here because I've always grown up being taught from the extreme ends from dads & moms who work at Nasa teaching me the laws of physics to the local Grannie's giving me witchy solutions to why the world is. It's left me a very open minded person who isn't afraid to say I don't know, I know whats "possible" in the realm of science but I also understand we are constantly changing what we know is possible in science. So I won't deny any of the freaky things I've experienced growing up here, but I also don't feel confident enough to say oh it's this or it's that spiritual entity or phenomenon. I'm not religious or even spiritual by choice. Life forces the spirituality on you, I don't care whats going on or who made what or for what purpose in this life. I really don't if it's important enough I'll find out when I'm dead but growing up here has not made theorizing what does happen when you die easy. It's all like they say in the beginning Freaky. We thought my father’s dad was having a affair in the 70’s/80’s with a physic from there then one day he got a reading that scared him, he swore the land was cursed and refused to set foot in town for the rest of his life. Family members went sniffing around to find the “woman,” but the found out the woman he was seeing was very old, and he was genuinely out there for readings not cheating. He got a reading that struck to close to home, he never told a soul what they said, and swore to never touch casadega again.

It's inconclusive. Some family members I want nothing to do with and some left wanting nothing to do with the rest of us. My brother disgusted with life drank himself to death. I can't see these people looking back on this life at us. It has no real purpose.

I wouldn’t consider myself a psychic but I’ve predicted a lot of things including my brother’s death which turned out to be true sadly. They say predictions can be subconscious collection of patterns given to the conscious as a idea or thought. I get these visions or flashes of images even dreams usually they’re accompanied by goosebumps. The day my brother died I dreamt his death like I was there. A year prior I have overwhelming feeling with a vision he was going to die within a year. (I brushed it off because I didn’t want to think it into reality and maybe it was based in fear.) My dream was exactly how he died. My mother had the same type of dream that same night and urged him to stay home. Sadly that didn’t happen, just thought my mom was being dramatic. I definitely believe in the spiritual world. My brother has visited me in my dreams, sometimes I even smell his cologne.

Years ago I went to a spirit investigation in Cassadaga. I went to the portal betwixt the trees. I thought of an old pet I had when I was a child. I had spooked him and he bit me when I was a little girl. I summoned him because I had spooked him as a child, causing the bite as a little girl. This caused him to become an "outside" dog by my mother and eventually my dad dropped him off as a stray to be put down. My sister and other people on the investigation had seen an orange orb around me during the Portal summoning. Animals are supposedly seen orange orbs in the afterlife. I felt his warmth during the session, and I fully believe I had made contact with him. I hope he felt my regret and love for him because he didn't mean to hurt me and I never meant for him to get hurt because of that situation. I hope he knows he's a good boy in the afterlife and that I loved him as much as a little kid could love their dog. I want to go back when I can afford to and hopefully make contact with him again so he knows I didn't want him to be abandoned by my parents. A guest medium who did a lot with physical mediumship came in from Florida to Austin, Texas. We had purchased a simple table earlier that day at Walmart. Four of us sat with fingertips lightly on the top. It began vibrating, and suddenly it was coming toward me, such that i had to push my chair away with my legs. It moved around the two rooms we were in with enough speed that it was difficult for me to keep my fingers on it and basically walk backwards the whole time. It came to rest in the same spot where we started. Four other people took a turn with the same results.
