    How to Train Your Dragon is probably my favourite animated movie trilogy of all time, it's impressive how they can develop a totally different world and still make Hiccup's experiences relatable enough to keep us engaged. And yes, the artwork is incredible!

      Well thank you! It's a subtle detail to the video but one which has required a ton of work behind-the-scenes to get right (with numerous companies). I'll probably be doing an updated studio tour soon because I've brought a lot of new stuff into the process - which of course, I need little excuse to yap about :)

    Finally. A professional who understands how amazing the art behind the film is.
    The only issue I have, is that the Goregutter isn't an antagonist, but the concept art definitely gives the impression!

    So i already own the artbook but watching this and hearing an actual explanation by somebody that worked/works in the animation field is sooo helpful!!! Because as a fan of the series you don't know exactly why these pages are so important for the movie. I didn't know about the color progression for example or the shape language thing. Like yes you can see that they tried diffrent designs, but with this video here you now ow whyyyy xD
    Thank you very much lucidpixul

      Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL preorder it from amazon, because I’m a big fan of Kojima and Shinkawa.
      The artbook focus mostly on props and character design which is also the strong suit of Yoji Shinkawa. I like how different his style is but still it probably makes it a lot harder for the 3D artists that had to interpret his designs.

    Oh man, if you love beauty in sense of scale then I hope you've looked into Fumito Ueda's trilogy of games, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian! It's a huge encompassing theme in all three games. I have heard he took large inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico's paintings.

    will you review witcher3 art some time? : ]

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  4 года назад +2

      I absolutely want to - but it's a little tricky because there are currency two books (in my cart I might add). The Witcher 3 compendium, which serves more as a storyline guide, then there's the art of Gwent, which is the cards, not the in-game art so much. So I'm really not sure how to go about that one. And that bugs me a lot because it's one of the most gorgeous games I've ever played.

      I agree, it´s a really gorgeous game!
      hmm ok, so the witcher 3 compendium version still functions as a concept arts book? If so, maybe you can do a part 1 & 2 of witcher 3 art?
      Part 1: The witcher 3 compendium
      Part 2: The art of Gwent

    I was wondering if you take artbook recommendations, I have lots of artbooks myself and I would recommend Dishonored 2, Thief, Fallout 4 and why not Bioshock Infinite too 🤔
    Of course Bloodborne and all of Dark Souls but I know you already made videos about these 😌
    One of my favourites is a tiny Monster Hunter world artbook named "editor's sketch" its all in japanese and its" only "pencil but I just love it 😌
    And voilà, but yeah I left this comment mostly because I was thinking of Thief and Dishonored 2, these games are underrated and people dont seems to realise the work that was put into the art and worldbuilding 🤔

    • @AdamDuffArt
      @AdamDuffArt  4 года назад +2

      Ooh yeah, Monster Hunter! I didn't consider that one - and absolutely, I take recommendations all the time. I'm on the fence about the Fallout one however. I don't think that Bethesda deserves much promotion at the moment with their immoral practices - which is a shame because their games are beautiful - but for the meantime I might put my book reviews on the back burner until they start behaving

      Shame though, I discovered great artists like Piotr Jablonski, Cedric Peyravernay or Sergei Koselov in their artbooks.
      Anyway, keep up the great content 😃

    Good explanation of different techniques in film art, though this isn't a movie I would say was in any way "Crafted By The Heart." It's as cold and corporate as you can get - very little regard for the previous movies in the series, a lot of thematic inconsistency, and the actual character designs have simply degenerated in this movie, there's no better word for it. Toothless has lost almost all of his distinctive personality and menace through body-language which was an important aspect in HTTYD 1 and 2, it instead being replaced with huge emotive eyes that make him seem like just another generic puppy-inspired character.
    Light fury also smells heavily of corporate meddling - if you look at her initial designs, they look much more draconic and wild, which was meant to be indicative of her role in the movie. Instead what we ended up with was a boiled-egg head with one of the most stereotypically feminine animal designs in movie history.
    Valka's design used to be interesting and unusual in HTTYD 2, with her being old and her forehead bulging slightly, and overall not falling fully into the western definition of beauty. Yet she was still a wonderful character with a lot of personality, and these unusual traits went together well. Now with THW, what we get is a Valka that looks like she's wearing makeup, has aged backwards instead of forward and looks completely generic in terms of facial features.
